I’ve had this for over a year installed on my 21 STI. Works great holding my bike rack or cargo tray. Did have some rattling after install but that was solved by adding some rubber tubing around my exhaust hanger.

2012 Subaru Impreza

Its a great hitch, especially for the money. The quality is spot on.
It has been rattling against my muffler, and I took it into a shop that said it is a clearance issue. I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing the same issue, but its highly annoying. Great hitch otherwise.

Charles, good news! There is a remedy for this issue. Check out our help article located at the following link:

Second Curt hitch for me. Nice, detailed instructions with photos. All the components included. It's real close to the muffler and makes it rattle a little. Going to try to adjust that tomorrow.

2018 Subaru WRX

This is not as easy to install with the stock WRX exhaust, FYI. In the etrailer.com video the install is done on a car with an aftermarket muffler delete which leaves a ton of room to work.
Also, once installed, the hitch itself hits the exhaust hangers on the stock exhaust and causes quite a rattle. I will have to drop the exhaust again and do a slight modification to the hitch to clearance for the exhaust hanger closest to the rear bumper... I did everything I could to try to move the exhaust on the hangers and the hitch on its mounting hardware and there was no way to get it to not touch.
Not awesome, but still not a terrible install and definitely one of the cheaper options for the car, so I guess you get what you pay for.

It sounds like you may have already tried these things, but I have attached a help article on correcting hitch rattle for you. I cannot recommend modifying the trailer hitch because that will void the hitch warranty and may compromise the structural integrity of the hitch. Another hitch option for your WRX, the EcoHitch # 306-X7257, installs higher on the vehicle and is designed to hug the spare tire compartment, sitting further away from the exhaust system. Ive attached an installation video of the EcoHitch being installed on a WRX with a full exhaust system for reference.

It rattles. I followed the instructions to a "t" and watched the install vid about 5 times. The install vid was great. It took me and my wife and I about three hours to get it installed ourselves. We made sure to tighten everything down, torque the flange nuts to specs, etc. But it rattles. They should not advertise this hitch as being compatible with the WRX, as it's clearly not. Not sure what my next steps will be.

You mentioned in your review that it is rattling and I wanted to let you know that this can be a common occurrence. It is most likely rattling because the hitch is rattling against the exhaust and there is a fix for that. Please see the FAQ below. It gives information on how to prevent the rattling.

2015 Subaru WRX

The build quality of this hitch is great I liked the weight it had and really like the line they give you to fish the bolts through the frame. It did not take long to install the steps were very easy to follow as well. The only problem I had was the coating on it. I work for a powder coat shop and when I prepped it for coating there were some sections that the coating came of easily. But other than that I love this thing and can't wait to make stuff to use with this.

Just installed my hitch on a 2016 Subaru WRX and couldn't ask for an easier installation. Great product and superb fitment. Also reall like the fact of the instructions are really easy to read and even had pictures.
Great product and fast shipping!!!!
Thanks

by:

Great product. Fitment is spot on. I did this installation alone with no problems. Didn’t even remove my aftermarket exhaust. Took about an hour and a half; including lugging up all the tools necessary. And it supports all 250 lbs of me bouncing on it, with no creaks or stress.

by:
2016 Subaru WRX

Great product! Fits very well and looks even better. Took only a couple hours but it's a very simple install with the right tools. Use a lift if possible to simplify the install even more.

I had to remove the hitch from my car because it was too close to the exhaust and made too much noise from vibration when driving.

Etrailer Expert

Rachael H.

8/21/2019

We do have a help article that is designed to help elevate the noise form a hitch and exhaust rattle that I have linked for your reference. In an ideal situation the hitch and exhaust should not be in contact and there should not be any noise, but there are a couple of adjustments that can be made to avoid this. Sounds like you do have a solution, and if you wish to install your hitch again, please be advised that the hardware is intended to be torqued to spec, and should be only be used for one installation. If you need to re-install your hitch please consider using replacement hardware. We do sell replacement hardware for our hitches as part # RHK, just enter your hitch number and manufacturer.

I opted for this hitch over the more expensive eco hitch. Well, that was a mistake. It has a terrible fit. Probably got under the car 5 or 6 times to try shaving the hitch down for more clearance, but in the end there was always an issue with something rattling or banging. Save yourself the time and money and just get the ecohitch, or you'll wish you did.

10/13/2022

You mentioned that you are experiencing rattling or banging underneath the vehicle. Is it that that the hitch is rattling against the exhaust? If that is the case, we do have a FAQ that helps. Please see the FAQ link below:

by:

The trailer hitch, once installed, works great. However the installation took about three times as long as the instructions stated because the exhaust system had to be dropped and the rear wheel liners had to be removed. Also the hitch did not clear the exhaust pipes and needed to be ground down in several spots.

Etrailer Expert

Sierra K.

12/9/2021

This hitch sits very close to the exhaust pipes. It may be possible to bend the exhaust hanger bracket to move the pipes over a little bit. Please view the help article below to find out more about this:

This trailer mount is well built and very solid. It is a little difficult to put on without a lift but I put the rear of my car up on jack stands and dropped the exhaust down. It was difficult to put the mount bolts through the holes and had to cut notches in the frame to accommodate getting them fed into the mount holes. Took about 1 1/2 hours to install.

HI, I was wondering how low the hitchreceiver was to the ground after installation? The WRX sits so low as it is I am concerned about ground clearance?ThanksBrian

Really easy to install if you have the right tools! Hardest part was just grinding out the back holes for the bolts to fit, other than that it's a simple bolt on.

by:
2016 Subaru WRX

Overall the design intention is there. It's well made as far as assembly goes. It's very poorly designed in terms of clearance with other parts, namely the dual exhaust setup on the WRX. I don't understand how people could mention rattling and still give this unit 4 or 5 stars? It is unbelievably annoying. I have adjusted my mufflers and the hitch itself a number of times now yet it still rattles like crazy. I even purchased aftermarket exhaust hangers for the mufflers hoping they would tighten up how they hang and keep them away from the hitch but it doesn't matter, it still rattles like crazy. It's pretty embarrassing riding around in this pristine $30k car and having a distinct rattling noise come from the rear of the vehicle EVERY time you start, downshift or get to about 3k rpms while decelerating. I would DEFINITELY NOT buy this product again if I was in the market. I guess you get what you pay for, should have gone with the eco hitch but then again I think that's too expensive for what it is.

As a side note. I don't recommend cutting into the frame rail like the directions tell you to just to install the included hardware. You risk the chance of corrosion or moisture and salt getting in the frame rail because you'll never seal it right after you cut it/enlarge the opening. If you remove the bumper (Which takes less than 5 minutes) and then the bumper support bar (8 bolts) you can just install the hardware (Metal plates and bolts) in the end of the frame rail, no cutting at all.

The trailer works really well for the amount of money it cost. It definitely could be easier when it comes to installation.

Overall I like the trailer hitch. The paint has been chipping away which is causing the metal underneath to rust. I believe a better type of paint, or changing the process in which the paint is applied would help.

Etrailer Expert

Heather A.

1/16/2019

Rust will sometimes form from moisture in the air and salt on the roads. If rust has started to form you can take fine sandpaper and sand it off as much as possible then cover that spot with a rustoleum type of paint. It is a good idea to check over the hitch for any scratches or deep gauges and paint over these areas to prevent future rust issues. I have attached a help article about preventing rust.

The installation was about as expected from the instructions. Dropping the exhaust was very easy once I used a good deal of WD40. Also, it was very easy to support the muffler with a floor jack and a tie-down strap as back-up. I used a 1" hole saw and tin snips to trim the heat shield; this was fairly stress free. To enlarge the access holes for the hardware I just drilled small holes in 2 places for each side and cleaned it up with a file. The fish-wire procedure was amazingly easy and worked just as noted in the instructions - the first try with each of the 4 sets of hardware.

I'm very happy with the final installation. The hitch fits perfectly up underneath the rear fascia and generally looks good. I have had other good experiences with eTrailer hitches in the past.

2014 Subaru Impreza

This is the third hitch I have purchased from etrailer and installed. The hitch and accessories arrived in great shape and look good once installed. The installation was not as easy as I was led to believe via the description and instructions. The instructions and the related video say that the holes on the frame “may need to be enlarged”. This is an understatement! The holes on the 2014 impreza are about ½ inch and need to be 1 inch! Save yourself some time and get a 1 inch step drill bit for $30-$40. I also removed the muffler completely before the install which ended up being a good decision. It came off pretty easy and without the muffler in the way it was very easy to remove the heat shield in order to drill the hole for the bolt. For the hole in the heat shield I used a 1 ½ hole saw for a nice clean hole. Total time to install was about 2.5 hours.

Amazing. I use it almost daily for my small business, pulling a small trailer. It scrapes on the pavement because my car is lower to the ground and it isn’t affected. I’d highly recommend. It was easy to install too

Have bought/used your products before though this time I found the added weight of the product alone caused the car to right too heavy. When adding the bike rack and bikes the car felt unbalanced. This car had only 25k miles on it and well cared for so it wasn't the car's suspension. Removed the product. I still trust and respect your company and will likely buy again at sometime.

  • Troubleshooting Exhaust Rattle on 2017 Subaru WRX with Curt Hitch Installed
That's a bummer you are getting exhaust noise. Vehicle manufacturers have enough variance in the way they make their exhaust systems and how they hang them that sometimes the hitch clearance is too tight. Best option is to check out the exhaust and hitch clearance to see where the interference is and either bend the hanger mount slightly to give more clearance or use a different exhaust hanger. I attached a help article and video that has more info as well.
