Video Transcript for Tekonsha Wiring 118151 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the ModuLite installation wiring kit. This kit provides the wire to be run to the vehicle battery to power the lights on your trailer. It works with all ModuLite wiring harnesses and includes all of the connectors necessary to complete the installation of the ModuLite wiring harness. This kit's going to come with one 10-amp fuse. It's going to come with the fuse holder, which is this component right here. It's going to come with eight cable ties. These are going to be designed to secure the wiring up and out of the way as you run it along the length of the vehicle.

It's going to come with one three-eighth inch diameter ring terminal, one half-inch diameter ring terminal, and it's going to come with one bundle of wiring. This is 12-gauge wiring that measures 20 feet long. You're going to get a butt connector as well. Basically, what you would do is you would connect this wire here to the power lead coming out of the ModuLite. You want to connect the two wires with the butt connector, and then you take the other other end, run it to the vehicle battery, and one end of this bundle would connect to one half of the fuse holder. The other half of the fuse holder would get one of the two ring terminals placed on it, and get connected to the positive post of the vehicle battery.

Again, the 10-amp fuse is included, goes directly in this area here, pushes in, and then it's got the cap on there that would go over it and keep it safe and protected. Then, you've got your cable ties to secure any excess or slack in your wiring. That's going to do it for today's look at the ModuLite installation wiring kit.

I installed the trailer wiring connector in about an hour and a half and it has worked well. I store the coil of the pig tail coiled in the tire inflation pump, floor compartment, until needed. I used it in my 2021 Ford Ecosport that I also installed a receiver hitch under. Easy to install and much, much cheaper than having the dealership install their version.

by:

Twenty feet of wire wasn't quite enough to make the entire run from the ModuLite to the battery in my 2000 Ford Econoline Van. It could have used another butt connector to attach the wire to the Modulite. These were very small problems as I had other wire and a connector on hand to complete the installation. Four stars for the product.

Five stars for etrailer's website and expert advice online in the form of videos, descriptions for installation, and Q&A section!

Thanks a lot!

Wonderful! Trailer lights bright!

by:

Having just bought a new Kia Soul with LED tail lights, I needed to be certain to get the correct products to properly wire my vehicle without damaging the electrical system. Local installers in my hometown were going to simply tap into the rear tail light wiring and go straight to the trailer lights.

Thanks to you guys and your helpful videos, you advised me to use the #118151 Modulite Installation Wiring Kit in conjunction with with the #119176 Wiring Harness. By doing so, the power wire to operate the trailer lights comes directly from my vehicle battery, and alleviates and/or prevents possible damage to the tail light system of my car.

I advise anyone to get in touch with the "EXPERTS" at etrailer.com for excellent advice and superior products to get the job done!!!!

Thanks,

Wayne

  • Troubleshooting the 12 Volt Power Circuit of a Factory 7-Way Connector on a 2009 Chevy Silverado
It sounds like there is an issue with the battery charge wire circuit that connects to the fuse block under the hood of your 2009 Chevy Silverado. I attached a link below to a page that shows how these connections are made. It is also possible that the fuse is blown on this circuit too, you should check your vehicle owners manual to determine which fuses pertain to the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle.

  • Installation of Auxillary Trailer Lighting On a 16 Foot Landscape Trailer, Behind a 2006 Ford F-150
If you have installed a separate battery for the LED lights that you installed then you will need to use a inline fuse to protect the LED lights and battery from shorting out. I would recommend the Modulite Installation Wiring Kit, item # 118151, which has the inline fuse needed and wire for wiring the power to the lights. You will need to ground the trailer battery to the trailer frame and the lights can then be grounded to the trailer frame. I would use a 6 gauge or larger wire and...

  • Wiring a Powered Modulite Power Wire and Backup Lights on a 2007 Mazda 5 Towing a Trailer
If the dealer hooked up the trailer wiring harness on your vehicle then they must know of a circuit that provides enough amperage to power trailer lighting and not affect the vehicle wiring in any way, if there is an over draw or short. We recommend that the power wire from the item # C59496, be connected to the vehicle battery positive post to eliminate any chance of damaging the sensitive circuitry on the vehicle. If you need to install a 5-Way adapter, item # 47515, to provide reverse...

  • Trailer Lights Not Working Using Curt 55367 on a 2000 Toyota Tundra
If nothing is working, then I would first check to see if any tow package fuses or relays are missing or blown. Use the owner's manual to find all fuse/relay locations. If that is not the issue, then it sounds like the previous owner has done a number on the original set up and you may have to have Toyota replace some of the factory tow package parts. Regarding the under-hood connection, it might already be set up from the factory (but the fuse associated with the battery feed could be...

  • No Power to Trailer Brakes with Brake Pedal on a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
I believe I know what is going on with your brake controller on your 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. But first a note on brake controllers. Brake controllers are not vehicle specific. Some trucks do have an option to plug a brake controller in directly and the harnesses used are vehicle specific. But the brake controllers themselves are not. Your 2006 Chevy Silverado is a model that can have a brake controller plugged directly into it. I do not know which brand brake controller it is that...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller On 2001 Ford Expedition
It sounds like you are having problems with the brake controller on your Expedition. You will want to check your owner's manual and locate all the fuses and relays labeled for Trailer Tow, and make sure they are all installed. You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and have someone use the manual override on the brake controller in the vehicle to make sure you have power to the pin on the vehicle 7-way. If you are using wiring harness, make sure that extra white ground wire...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Doesnt work With Brake Pedal of 2003 GMC 2500HD Sierra
This is a super common problem for GM trucks around the age of your 2003 GMC 2500HD Sierra. Check the third brake light fuse of the truck. This fuse blows very easily in your truck and when that circuit is dead it takes out the circuit needed to activate a brake controller with the brake pedal. An easy way to check this is to press the brake pedal and see if the brake light above the truck bed activates. If so, then this is the problem.

I also included a link to a couple of videos showing installation on different vehicles, since we don't have a video for a Tiguan. These videos will give you a general idea of the install process. To determine if the problem is with the vehicle or the trailer, first disconnect the trailer from the vehicle. Then use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 or the one that came with # C59496. Test the pins on the 4-Way using the circuit tester while someone sites in the vehicle and runs through the functions. If all the signals are correct on the 4-Way when you test it, then the issue is on the trailer. But if the signals are not correct then there is a problem with either the wiring harness,...

In order to install the Access LED Truck Bed Lighting Kit, # A70380, so that it can be turned on without the key in the vehicle on, you can just wire it to the battery and use the switch that is already included with the light kit. A lot depends on what the factory 7-Way wiring is being used for. You may not want to tap into it if it is used for critical functions that might overload the circuitry in the event both are used at the same time. What I recommend is what you have suggested and adding a 4-Way to the tail lights, # 118344, provided the tail lights are the same on your cutaway as the regular E series van. If they are different then I recommend a powered converter, # C59236. This will get the signals for...

  • Troubleshooting a Wiring Harness That is Not Getting Power on a 2019 VW Golf
This does happen sometimes when installing wiring harnesses and is usually caused by one of three things. You will need to use a circuit tester, like the # PTW2993, to figure out which will be the cause. First, and the easiest, will be to check the fuse in line from the battery to the ModuLite box. These are occasionally bad out of the box and will not allow any power to get where it needs to go. If it is indeed bad, replace it and test your 4 Flat. You should be good to go, but if you...
