First, using a brake controller is a good idea because without using one, the weight and momentum of the trailer will keep pushing the vehicle forward when braking. This will increase wear and tear on your Land Rover and could push you right into an intersection. Braking would need to start sooner and will last longer since the vehicle will be braking for 2 instead of just slowing and stopping itself.
