Recommended Weight Distribution and Anti-Sway System For 2004 Range Rover And 7500 GVWR

Question:

I am just finishing up getting my 2004 Range Rover ready for towing. I have had the wiring harness installed and trailer brakes are going in monday. I am looking to get a load distribution/sway control hitch and wondering if you have a recommendation? I know the trailer max tow weight is about 7500 and tongue weight is 550. I am looking at getting a trailer no more than 6500lbs max. thanks for any help.

For a weight distribution system with anti-sway, you want to look at the total tongue weight of you vehicle and trailer. The total tongue weight is the loaded tongue weight of your trailer combined with any cargo weight behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. For your 2004 Range Rover, that would be your cargo area when loaded.

Your trailer tongue weight when loaded is normally between 10 and 15% of your total trailer weight. With this in mind and considering for some cargo weight in the tow vehicle, I recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion # RP66560. This system is for total tongue weight between 600 and 1200 lbs. This system uses automotive grade friction material, similar to automotive brake pads, to control the sway of your trailer. The spring bars keep friction on these pads, so the system is very easy to use.

You will need a hitch ball with this system and I recommend the # A-90 for a 2 inch option or the # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch option. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver and Coupler Lock Set - 2" Hitches - 2" or 2-5/16" Ball # C23088 for additional security.
