You're exactly correct. Once the # 24965 hitch is installed, it will act as the heat shield protecting the gas tank from the heat given off by the exhaust system. Honestly I do not recommend the Thule OutWay # TH65JV just because of the weight and damage it has caused other vehicles. Especially on a brand new vehicle such as your 2013 Hyundai Sonata.
