I would recommend a Class III hitch over a Class II hitch in any situation where a Class III hitch is available. Even though you only need to tow a small trailer today your needs may change in the future and the class II hitch may not be able to do what you need. Another upside to the Class III hitch is that there are many more accessories designed to fit the Class III hitch. For just a few dollars more you will have more towing capacity, safety and convenience.

Your best bet would be to trace the running light circuit from the trailer connector all the way back to the lamps. You will want to pay careful attention to the point where the running light circuit for the right side of the trailer splits off from the circuit for the left side. From the top of the shank to the top edge of the carrier I measured 6-5/8 inches when the carrier is not folded up.
