I would not recommend trying to fashion the Yakima Landing Pads 24, part # Y74FR, out of aluminum yourself. These fit kits have to be very precise, and trying to make one for yourself will definitely void any kind of warranty on the towers and crossbars.

The black base on the CIPA Rearview Mirror # CM32000 features a durable plastic construction. The mirror does come with a metal bracket piece though if your truck isn't already equipped with a wedge-style bracket. This is the small silver color piece included in the kit that would get attached to the windshield with adhesive.
