The owner's manual is what we defer to when it comes to flat towing vehicles. It looks like your 2022 GMC Canyon Elevation does states that the 4WD vehicle needs to have the N (Neutral) and 4WD Low settings to flat tow it. From what I'm seeing it does look like this is always present on the Elevation model so you'll need to contact whoever you're purchasing the truck from to ensure it has these settings.

You will need the Universal Wiring Harness # RED69FR to install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR into your 2016 GMC Canyon. I do have a few options available for you however, we currently do not sell torsion axles. You have two options to consider for your trailer, the Timbren axle-less suspension and the Dexter straight axles. As you have a gross trailer weight (GTW) of 3,000 lbs. I recommend using a 3,500 lb setup. The Timbren System will provide you with a much easier method for converting from torsion springs in addition to containing fewer components.

In order to add a 3rd brake-only light to your truck cap you will use a tail light converter to separate out the brake signal from the combined brake/turn signal circuits on your Canyon.

The Curt # C51170 (or any brake controller, for that matter) isn't a vehicle-specific item. It'll work on just about any vehicle that has a standard hydraulic braking system.

What you are seeing is correct, and you are right about the reasoning behind it. Since the key must stay in the ACCESSORY mode to keep the steering wheel from locking up, this means that there are some components that can drain your battery over the course of time while you are flat towing. If you were to forget to disconnect it then you would simply have a dead battery once you arrive at your destination (if it's far enough away).
