Crossbar Spread

Stylish, Folding Carrier with Padded Arms and Base

Kuat Class 4 V2
The sleek and stylish Kuat Class 4 V2 lets you transport a kayak on your roof rack crossbars. It takes up less space on your roof rack than most J-style carriers, and it holds your kayak on its side, leaving plenty of room on your crossbars for another kayak rack, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

Kuat Class 4 V2

The Class 4 V2 has built-in boarding ramps that make it easier to push your kayak onto the roof of you vehicle by yourself. Additionally, its arms and bases have a thick, rippled rubber padding to protect your kayak from scratches and scuffs while loading and during transport. This durable padding also provides extra grip, so your kayak doesn't shift once secured.

Kuat Class 4 V2Kuat Class 4 V2

The Class 4 has two positions: open in a J-style cradle position to carry a kayak or closed to create overhead clearance for parking in your garage when not in use. To open the carrier, pull the butterfly lever from either side of the base and lift the arm up. To close the Class 4, pull on the butterfly lever and fold the arm down. There are magnets in the arm piece that keep the carrier closed.

Load Straps and Bow/Stern Tie-Downs

Kuat Class 4 V2 Kuat Class 4 V2

With most kayak carriers, tying down your kayak can be a hassle because of shifting straps. The Class 4 simplifies that process with convenient strap ports in the arms and base of the carrier. Once fed through the slots, the straps stay in place while securing your kayak to your vehicle.

Kuat Class 4 V2 Straps

The carrier comes with a total of 4 straps: 2 tie-down straps that secure your kayak to the carrier and a set of bow/stern straps to secure it to the front and back of your vehicle. The rubber-coated cam buckles on the carrier straps and the rubber sleeves on the bow/stern tie-downs protect your vehicle and kayak from scratches. All the straps are made of durable nylon webbing and have hook-and-loop fasteners to secure excess slack.

If your vehicle doesn't have any tie-down points, you can get an anchor kit (sold separately), which will let you create anchor points in the creases of your vehicle's hood and hatch.

Tool-Free Installation

Kuat Class 4 V2 Clamp-On Installation

The Class 4 comes with clamp-on and channel mount installation options. To utilize the locking clamp-on installation kit, open the Flip mount, slide the strap underneath your crossbars, insert the strap under the lever on the front of the mount, and flip the lever closed. Once installed, tighten the strap tensioner with the provided hex key. This will only have to be done the first time the carrier is installed, then the Class 4 will be set to your bars. Finally, you can adjust the angle of the Class 4, depending on the slope of your vehicle's roof, to create a flat surface for your kayak.

The clamp-on mounting option is perfect for paddlers who leave their rack installed while they're out on the water but remove it when they aren't actively transporting a kayak. It's also great for crossbars that don't have top channels.

Kuat Class 4 V2 Clamp-On InstallationKuat Class 4 V2

To utilize the channel mount installation kit, slide the carrier into your crossbar's top channel, position the cradles to best accommodate your kayak, and tighten the bolts with the provided hex key. This option is perfect for paddlers who prefer to leave the carrier installed between uses.

Built-In Security

Kuat Class 4 V2 Lock

Whichever mounting option you choose, you'll have peace of mind knowing that the Class 4 is secured to your vehicle. The clamp-on mounting brackets have integrated locks that secure the straps around your crossbars to deter theft. These lock cores can be swapped out (sold separately) if you have other Kuat accessories and want them keyed alike. For the channel mount option, the bolts that secure the carrier in your crossbars' top channels require a hex key to be removed.

Video Transcript for Kuat Class 4 V2 Kayak Carrier Review

Take a look at that. This is the Kuat Class 4 V2 Kayak Carrier. So it's gonna get my kayaks to where I want to be. This is definitely gonna be a premium option when it comes to all of our J-style carriers, just because it looks good and has a lot of really cool features. But at the end of the day, it's just getting my kayaks to where I really want 'em. And I also just love how it is just nice, quick and easy, so I can get on the water a little bit faster.

Comes in two different colors. So one of 'em is gonna match our NV 2.0 right here and the different colors differences is either gray or black. So you have a little bit of black right here with the little circle, just being black as well. Or you can get gray, like our NV has a little orange accent. Looks really cool to J-style carrier so you're gonna have the longer part on this side and then a little notch right here so you can load it from this side of your vehicle.

Depending on how tall it is, is gonna depend on how easy it is but we got two up there, no problem. And even without yaks on top, it looks really cool as well. A lot of good things going on with this. One thing I noticed right away when I put my kayak up there, the padding's really thick, it's really grippy. I know it's brand new when we pulled it out, but still it just has a lot of padding compared to some of the others and it's extremely solid on top of the roof which I definitely like.

The padding continues from underneath all the way to the backside to even protect the bottom of your kayak as well. It also includes the bow and stern straps which they threw in a little pad right here because there is gonna be a little bit of rubbing. But with the pad, my paint's gonna stay safe. We have two more straps in the middle for each carrier and they are both going to lock right there. If you do have another accessory like a bike rack or something, you can get the same key system to make sure that all of them are gonna have the same exact key which I think is pretty neat.

Especially if you like to just load up with the same brand of gear for all your adventures. Everybody takes their kayak down differently. What I do is start with the bow and stern. So there is gonna be a decent amount of excess strap so if you have a longer vehicle, you're gonna have plenty of strap to be able to get to that little point. We're gonna have a little cam buckle here. I'm gonna pull this through and then we can take that off right there. Let me show you where I'm tying down to my Tahoe right here. I have these little pull things right here. Go ahead and just tie those down. I'm using my hitch in the back, but if you don't have that you can go ahead and grab a little piece that goes into your hood to secure it that way. Just use your little handles on your kayak and you just wanna loop it through like we have it right here. It's the same on the back. One thing I like about the cam buckles that go around your kayak, they do have a rubber coating so even if you don't have it in the open part which is usually where I put my cams, but if it doesn't really work out like the backside over here, I don't have to worry about my kayak getting scratched up while I'm hauling. Notice these little slots right here. That's where your strap goes. So it's gonna go through those slots but it's also gonna go down below your crossbar. So don't just hook it up to this go down below your crossbar, just like I did. And once these are out I just like to just toss 'em in the back so they stay put for when I start to load. Look at all this excess strap. So regardless of what kind of kayak that you have as long as it's under 75 pounds, it's gonna work. I'm kind of on a hill and my car is relatively tall with the bigger tires that I have on here. But usually what I like to do, regardless of how tall the car is, you kind of pull it on like this, and it'll kind of fall right into you. You grab it and hit the water. And now we're ready to rip. This is what it's all about. I love getting on the yak. I got a fresh dock and I'm just not in the mood for a boat today. Wanna be more mobile. So, ah I'm gonna go grab my paddles. Well, I got my trustee rod and I got my paddles so I'm gonna get outta here. That's pretty much the main gist of it. There's a lot of different carriers on our site. I think the Kuat definitely looks the best and it just protects your stuff. There's nothing really missing when it comes to the features, what it comes with, it comes with lock straps. There's a lot of other things. So now that the kayak is off of it, I'm gonna paddle on back to the car and we can take a little closer, look at it. One thing I just noticed, it just looks so cool up there. Roof is all loaded up, but let's get a closer look at it, shall we Comparing the class 4 from Kuat to some of the others on our site, one thing I really appreciate whenever I'm trying to get our main strap on here is this little slot right here. So you just push it in like this and it's gonna stay put. So some of the other ones that are around and tubed they sometimes you go like this and it just falls to the side. It's one other thing you kind of have to mess with especially with a kayak in between you and the back where the strap goes. I definitely appreciate this little slot up here, it makes it a lot easier. The rubber on the bottom is ribbed so even if you do have a wet kayak, which odds are you do it's gonna catch a little bit easier so it's not gonna slide. And once you have it off you can go ahead and fold this down. I do really like this, cuz you can access it on both sides. Go like this and it goes right into place and locks in. So it's not gonna be flapping up and down if you're hitting bumpy stuff. Some roofs are curved and you need a little bit of adjustment to make it nice and even. This one gives us a couple different adjustment points to make sure that everything is nice and level on a roof. Kuat did a really good job with designing this. All their stuff looks really good and these look amazing as well. So I wouldn't really take these off, but if you did want to take 'em off and put 'em back on every single time you go, super quick and easy. You have this little flap right here, flip this up, flip this up, off. Put it on, put it in the slot, fold it down. Put it in the slot, fold it down, done. And we can lock these as well. So whenever you take your keys, go in here, turn it, and it's gonna lock that knob. So this thing's not gonna come out at all. Big fan of the mounting hardware. It's just a steel band, but it's coated in rubber so you don't have to worry about it scratching up your bars. And this really is the best way to get it on quick but also just protect your bars and get a nice and tight fit. I really like that. It's better than any of the knobs that you have to turn or anything like that. In a matter of seconds, it's already on your roof kind of ready to rip and then you just have to open it up with a little lever. So it's either going to stay open like this but notice right around here, there's some magnets. So when it does close, like it might pop up a little bit if you're really hitting some bumps but it's not gonna be noisy on your roof at all. Whatever kind of cross bars you have on your roof, you don't really have to worry about them not fitting the Kuat Class 3 V2 is going to fit up to four and a half inches wide. So even for your ladder racks it's most likely gonna work even with your factory bars. Anything that has a height from a half inch all the way up to two inches, it's also gonna work. But there's another thing you can do. What you can do is you can remove these two little bolts right here and then these whole entire feet are gonna come off and it does come with a T-slot kit. So if you do have arrow bars or whatever that have slots on top, it comes with it so you can mount it that way too. From the bottom of our rubber cushion here to the top of the raised arm, it's gonna be fourteen and an eighth of an inch and then from the inside of each of these peaks it's going to be nine and three eight of an inch and then on this back arm the total width of this back arm is five inches. We fit two kayaks on our roof. So from here to the farthest edge right here, it's gonna be twenty and nine sixteenth of an inch. That'll give you an idea if you're gonna have enough to fit two on your roof most likely you will. From the top of your crossbar to the top of the carrier, when it's folded up seventeen inches. From the top of your crossbar to the top when it's folded down is four inches. Fish aren't biting, so I'm going home. So let's get ready. What I do just to prepare for it so I can just throw my kayak up here right away is I take my strap, lean it through here, grab it from the other side. I try to get it somewhat even and then I take this and I go over the back side and I'll grab this later once I put my kayak up. Do that for both and grab your yak. Another thing, which makes it a little bit quicker might as well just put these on our little handles right here before we go just so you don't have to reach up. I just do this just because my car's pretty tall and rather not have to get up there and do this. So I'm gonna do it down on the ground. Quick tip for Adam. At the end of the day I just wanna go yaking. I think a lot of the J-style carriers are pretty much the same. This one looks a lot nicer, I could tell you that and it does have a lot of cool features especially just the strap up top. It just kind of makes it a little easier to load it up. But at the end of the day if you wanted to turn some heads with some nice equipment the Kuat Class 4 V2 is definitely the top of the line of what we have on our site. You made it this far on the video you're definitely on the right webpage. This is one of the nicest J-style kayak carriers we carry and it's definitely gonna be on top of my rig. So if you wanna turn some heads, go with the Kuat Class 4 V2. I'm gonna head back to the shop..

I wanted to share the items I used to be able to haul two Wilderness Systems Tsunami 145 kayaks on my 2006 Scion xB. This may help others who struggle with deciding what to use. I am pleased with my purchase and hope this helps. I originally thought I wanted the Thule Hull-A-Port Aero, but they discontinued making the fit kit for their roof rack systems and I ended up going with the Kuats. I am glad that they didn’t make the fit kit for approximately $[XX] and so they missed out on the rest of my business. Here are the items I used for anyone interested – pictures included. Custom DK Fit Kit for 4 Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Roof Rack Legs - Naked Roof #DK138, Kuat Class 4 V2 Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding - 1 Kayak - Black #KU53VR and these are really cool, Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs for Vortex Aero Crossbars - Naked Roofs or Fixed Mounting Points - Qty 4 #RRRLKVA, Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 54" Long - Qty 2 #RRVA137-B2. The 54” crossbars fit really well and the perfect length in my opinion and it doesn’t stick out like the longer ones would. Also purchased two sets of these Malone QuickLash T-Style Hood Loops for Bow and Stern Tie-Downs - Qty 2 #MPG308.

This review is based on my experience installing these racks and using them to carry my boat on one trip.

I bought these because a previous review praised their low air noise, they appear to be quick to mount, and came with locks, and were $100 less than major brands which did not come with locks.

The process of mounting them went well. I chose to use the straps because this would be easier to put on and off than the T-slot. I found the strap a little tricky to engage, but anticipate this will go away with practice and as I get the tension adjusted.

However, I have two concerns. Most importantly, the but of metal that covers the key slot is stiff. On one lock, I find it quite difficult to fit the key into the lock because this cover does not move easily. I'm worried that this will become more difficult with time, rendering the lock inoperable. At best, it is a nuisance.

Secondly, there is more slop in the hinge than I expected. The upright end can wiggle about 1.5 inches. In practice, this may be a non-issue. When closed, magnets keep the upright in position. Once I loaded my kayak, I didn't detect any wiggle.

The saddles did a good job of holding my kayak. The kayak was more secure than with the "Stackers" I have been using. There are some nice touches: On the up-right there is a slot for the strap so it is always in position. The bottom cradle also has slots for the strap to keep them secure (for those who's cradles are position such that the strap is not captured by the cross-bar upright).

The cradle came with straps for the cradles plus bow and stern. I must give these a mixed review. They have a good buckle that does not let the strap slip so that is great. But the strap itself is lighter weight than most others. OK for now but I anticipate it will fray with use. The end of one strap was not well melted, making it difficult to pass through the buckle. I'll have to re-melt that. So, a little more care could be put into the straps.

Summary: Great product at a good price. I deducted 1 star because of the stiff locks and light weight straps.

This is all based one one use. I wrote this review because etrailer asked and I have the impression this is a new product and needs more reviews. However, I can't say anything about durability or annoyances that appear after multiple use. If no significant problems arise, I'll eventually purchase a second set.

I have a Leitner rack system on my truck. It’s top of the line and heavy duty. Before finding the Küat Class 4 V2 I was told nothing would fit my racks. I kayak and paddle board a lot, so this was frustrating. I went through numerous racks, they all wore out from wobbling and what not. Then I found these, they fit amazing even with the metal band. They also offer a T channel mount that would fit my racks if the bands didn’t work. They are quality built and look amazing. I am so happy, I wish I had found these early and not had to buy so many racks over the years. My racks are 2”x2” square racks.

These Kuat kayak racks are excellent. Easier to use than my existing Thule racks which are rubber saddles. I actually have to lift the kayak further with Thule and had broken the rubber saddle previously. The wind noise on the Kuat Class 4 V2 is significantly less than the saddles on the cross bars. I have them mounted on a Subaru Outback Limited factory cross bars. Also, eTrailer.com continues to provide excellent service and quick shipping.
