Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution, and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control, and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have 4 layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. No drilling required.

I installed this about two weeks ago. I don’t have a lift so spent a lot of time on a crawler. Thank goodness there is sufficient underbelly height on my Silverado 2500HD.

I bought these just to remove a bit of sag when I hook up the fifth wheel. Installation was pretty easy and the instructions were fine. Although I learned from my mistakes doing the first one, which made installing the other much smoother. I haven’t had the fifth wheel hooked up yet, but I don’t think there will be any issues. I have had them inflated to 10 PSI and the haven’t lost any pressure yet. That’s with an empty bed, so we will see how they hold up with a load.

Since I didn’t get an air compressor kit with them, I was able to use two spare TPMS sensors that I had on hand to monitor the PSI of the air bags.

So far so good. etrailer service was great as usual.

High quality and easy to install. These air bags are working very well and keeping my truck level while towing my tow hauler.

I’ve used these bags for a year now on several different trips with my trailer and they’ve been amazing. I’m inflating to 25 lbs of pressure and it levels my truck nicely while towing my 34’ toy hauler.

by:

So far so good. I installed these in just over 2 hours on my 2013 Chevy 2500HD for help with my fifth wheel. I pull a 12.7k pound (dry) camper. My truck was level prior to airbags, but had really harsh bouncing over bridges, put holes, etc. The side to side way and roll was noticeable was noticeable as well. These bags put all of that to an end. I've towed twice with them and 35psi seems to do the trick (doesn't life the truck higher in the rear, and takes away the bounce and roll).

I must point out that installation while straight forward, still had some issues with stock components. The parking brake cable and brackets had to be removed on both sides for the springs brackets to be installed. The passenger side bracket covered the OEM parking brake bracket location and the driver side is too tight of a fit without crimping the brake cable. My brake cable is no freely resting across the truck which I'm not a huge fan of.

Arrived quickly. Instructions were completed and understanding. Installation went smooth with no issues. Truck rides well with the 5lbs of air in the bags. Will be testing the air bags in a few weeks with a 12K fifth wheel. So far so good.

Just got done installing the Firestone airbag kit for my 2020 Chevy 2500 LTZ Z71 crewcab Duramax truck. Install went smooth, with no issues at all. I had the Firestone airbags on a previous truck and really liked them. I got the kit for a 5th wheel trailer.

This kit has been great! Easy installation and a much improved towing experience with our fifth wheel. We have a Chevy 2500 and this really level the truck. We’ve put about 8000 miles on so far. Etrailer is an authorized dealer for these, so the warranty will be honored if there’s ever a problem.

by:

These air bags were easy to install and required no drilling of the truck. I have a SRW 1-Ton Truck and usually run 15 pounds in them when pulling my 5th wheel for a much smoother ride. I love the performance and plan to put them on my next truck.

by:
2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

I’m happy with the bags overall. These are my second set. I had a set on a 2019 Chevy 3500 and never an issue. Now I have them on my 2022 Chevy 2500. Install was straight forward. Only came across one issue. The drivers side bag has a lean to it. In the video it mentions tapping the lower forward hook bracket into place near the shock mount, but my mount was welded too close to do this. So, it could only go inside of the shock mount. Hopefully it’s ok.

I reached out to Firestone and they said that your set up looks safe and secure, ready to use! So now you can rest at ease and ride with peace of mind knowing all is on the up and up.

I installed them myself on my 2021 Silverado 2500HD. They air up easily and hold the load up well. I installed the pressure fitting on lower fender skirt right behind rear tire, not in the rear bumper. That way I can easily get to the fitting when my camper is on the truck. Learned the hard way from my last PU>

I got bids for local distributors who were quite a bit more the cost of purchasing my air springs from etrailer.com When I called the 800 number I was connected with Martha. She answered all of my questions and came up with options I hadn't evern thought of. She walked me throught the entire purchase, told me when they would ship and also when they arrived at my door. I also asked about tire pressure sensors. she researched it and sent me helpfuyl information of what i needed and the cost. this is my first time purchasing with etrailer.com and I'd do it again in a heratbeat next time i need somthing for my truck. Very Happy with their service, knowledge, and helpful hints.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Outstanding product. Went together very easily. Great instructions. It took me an hour per side working by myself, laying on the garage floor.

by:

Installed on a 2016 2500 GMC. First and foremost etrailer customer service has been great. Called and asked a few questions and they were able to answer them. Tow a 35ft bumper pull rv quite a bit. Have always had a light front end, primarily due to loading of the trailer and truck bed. Rv stores set you up level, but your empty on both. Loaded it rides different. I adjusted my Husky center line hitch but that didn't help. Tourqed the trailer too much. Install was easy. Have a helper. Watch the video etrailer has provided, they explain the process very well. Bolt everything together, test fit, make your alignment marks then tourqe all the necessary bolts. Pull the spare off and the heat shield. Gives you ample room. All in all easy to install and definatly gets rid of body roll. Will post a follow up after I pull my trailer. Good Luck and enjoy!! Thanks again etrailer

by:

Much better than the air ride setup I had previously. The install was easy, looks nice and clean, and works awesome for what I use it for...no real heavy towing, I just like to maintain the ride height and headlight angles depending on what I am towing. They work great and 1 year in I have had absolutely no issues.

by:

They are well made, the installation instructions are good and everything works well. They do what they say they will and definitely make load more stable. I do feel like they add a little bounce to ride even at low pressures. I previously had some Timbren which worked as well loaded and no input required from operator but they added a lot of harshness to unloaded drving.

by:

Great product. Installed easily. Reliable with no issues. Smooths the ride.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500

The Ride-Rite Air bags were easy to install. I installed them to level out my truck when towing my 5th wheel. These were installed on a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD short bed 4x4.

by:

Love the air bags. They make a huge difference in the ride of the trailer as we are pulling it to various locations.

by:
Ram 2500

I tow a 30' TAG and the rear of my 2500 Chevy squatted down a bit. These were pretty easy to install (a few hours, on my back in the driveway - no need to jack the truck up). They really help level the truck when I'm towing, which has actually increased the ride quality.
I tow frequently enough that I leave them at about 45psi all the time - and when I don't have a trailer connected, I don't think they hurt the ride quality.
For setting their pressures (each one is individual), I use a little Milwaukee compressor that lets me type in a number and then it automatically shuts off. I feel this helps make sure they're at the same pressure - it was harder to do with an air chuck and a tire gauge.

by:

I am satisfied with them. My only concern is at low pressures, the air bags do not hold air. When empty and have pressure at 7-8 psi, everytime I start the vehicle it needs to pump them back up. At higher pressure, they hold pressure.

by:

They are easy to install, they fit as described and perform great. This is the 2nd truck I have used these airbags on and would use nothing else for my trucks.

by:

Very happy with my air bags. Install was easy and only took 3 hours to complete. Etrailer has been my go to place for all my truck needs.

by:

Installation pictures didn't show clearly what side of the rails to place the top bracket along with what was the front or back of the illustration Some of the assembly pictures are too small to easily pick out details of parts

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Second set of Ride-Rites, set on my 2014 Chevy were professionally installed and they were great. I installed this set on my current 2019 Chevy 2500 HD diesel 4x4. On the left side there was a factory brake hose support mount drilled into the frame that directly obstructed the hook spring mount. Had to remove the mounting bolt and sandwich the support mount between the frame and spring mount. A variation of the obstruction on the driver side too, but manageable. Video and written instructions didn't address those problems. The 2" inch carriage bolts for the hook spring mounts should be at least 1/4" longer. The result was a very difficult time getting enough threads to start the flange nut. Once tightened the nut is only flush with the end of the threads. I chose to use a t-connection so both bags inflate/deflate off of one valve, more convenient and practical for my 5th wheel. Put the valve just above the license plate light (all plastic no metal) in the bumper which is easy to access to yet not really noticeable, especially after painting the cap and valve black. Did this without a lift while on my back, my body is paying that price after a solid 4 hours, I'm 64. I had all the tools except a large wrench for the large hex nut but an adjustable wrench eventually got the job done. Video, while not prefect was a great assist to installation. Sorry for the long review, just warning fellow backyard mechanics that this is a challenge while on your back...but what else can you do during this COVID shutdown nonsense. Aspirin is my friend today.

by:

Good product. I installed myself in about 2.5 hours. The first one took longer has I was figuring out how it went together. The 2nd side went much quicker. I have had these installed for 1 year hauling my 36ft fifth wheel around 12k lbs with a pin weight of about 2,200lbs. They have about 3 thousand miles pulling the trailer. It’s been a good product and will purchase again if needed for a new truck.

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement To Level A 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 Out While Hauling A Trailer
Hey John, If you're referring to the SuperSprings # SSA13MXKT you wouldn't really be getting much of an improvement over the RAS system since they operate the same way and both have similar capacities. Air springs would allow you tor adjust the height quite a bit more precisely but require a maintenance and you'd need an air compressor to adjust the psi levels. You could increase the capacity of your jounce springs to ones like the # SSR-203-47-2 but that could affect you unloaded ride...
