How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Trailer Jack - Side Frame Mount Jack - BD150000 Review

Today, well be reviewing part number BD150000. This is the Bulldog Round Jack with no mount. Has a top-wind handle. Its going to provide 10 of lift and trade at 2,000 lbs. This dependable jack is recognized as industry standard for agricultural and commercial applications. Its also ASABE compliant. It does have precision-fitted parts that are going to help provide exceptional stability and reliability, and the tip-wind handle has a smooth, ergonomic design for easy cranking.

The grip here is a nice, claw grip which is going to allow us to securely grab onto the handle. The outer tube has a nice, gray paint finish and the inner tube is a zinc-plated finish so its going to stand up nicely against rust and corrosion.A couple accessories that are sold separately that may be helpful: the first one is a caster wheel. This would mount to the bottom of your jack. You can see that it attaches with a hole and a pin and clip, so its going to look like that. The only thing that you would need to do is stick your jack into the caster and mark two pilot holes to drill a hole through. That way you can secure it with the pin.

This is available and sold separately with part number BDCP555.Also available and sold separately is a foot plate. This can be found on our website with part number BD018564. It installs the same way as the caster wheel. Once we have our jack in there, we can just mark pilot holes, drill the appropriate size hole, which the pin is in diameter, so it just needs to be a little bit larger than that, and then you can secure it with your pin. When the jack is fully retracted, were going to have a height from the bottom of the inner tube to the top of our jack of 15. When its fully extended, that measurement is going to increase to 25.

If we subtract those two measurements were left with 10, and thats where we get our lift measurement from. Our outer tube has a diameter of 2 and our inner tube has a diameter of right at 2. This jack does come with a lift capacity of 2,000 lbs. and when the handles not in use, you can flip it over to a stowed position.Thats going to complete todays review of part number BD150000. Thats the Bulldog Round Jack, rated at 2,000 lbs. .

It fit the bill very nicely and everything seems to be doing just fine. It is easy to work with.

Good quality jack that I installed on my trailer after the A frame jack was destroyed while towing my ATV during an elk hunt in the Gila. Excellent customer service and quick shipping.

by:

These are good jacks and work perfectly for our product. the only issue I have is that shipping is less than stellar. The jacks are packaged loose (I order 40 to 50 at a time if they have them available) and often arrive with the grease zerks broken off and paint scratched up. I have the means to repair the damage, it is just frustrating to have to repair something I order new.

Attached is a picture of how I am using the unit.

I have a two wheel trailer type sprayer manufactured by Rears Corp in Oregon. They supply a Bulldog 158151 with the sprayer to support the tongue when the sprayer is disconnected from the tractor three point hitch

To reconnect to the tractor it is easier to have a unit with a wheel which is why I ordered the BD1541150301 and BDCP555. It did take me over two months to get delivery, but the unit works fine.

You may want to contact Rears Corp and see if they would like to switch to the unit with the wheel. The only down side is that the 158151 supports 2000 lbs and the BDCP555 oly 1500 lbs.

Here are some pictures of what I used your product for. The splitter just had a fixed position stand and it is fairly heavy so it was difficult to hook to the ranger because the stand had to be removed first. Now I can just let it down to the hitch and with the wheel I can also move it around the shop without lifting it. We also put an extra mount on the back so the wood falling from the splitter would not damage it. Thanks for the good service,

by:

Jack fit my receiver very well. The pin was a little big for my receiving mount but that can be remedied. The wheel has a loose fit to the hitch but works quite well.
Overall it’s a pretty decent fit and will surely help at the campsites. Thanks!!

I have used this product previously though it was supplied by a different vendor who had terrible reviews and is now out of business. I am a snowmobile nut and use this product to build snowmobile lifts for myself and friends. etrailer.com supplied this same jack for a better total price than I got 2 years ago from the other company and the etrailer folks were super to work with. One call and everything was set up and they kept me informed my order status all the way through til delivery. Great customer service and will do business with these guys in the future.

Can't go wrong with Bulldog - needed shorter tongue jack to enable parking on my slopped drive way - this was the charm.........

by:

High quality lift - works well.

by:

We used them to make an adjustable height welding table.

by:

I used this jack for a very tiny teardrop I was building to pull behind my car. I chose it because this was the lowest stand I could find to crank down to the low hitch on the car. It's a great quality hitch and very versatile combined with the weld on pipe mount.

There are a few draw backs to consider but only for similar applications. It's a much heavier stand than I need for a lightweight trailer. To save weight I didn't add a foot but this allows the telescoping lift peice to spin in the outer housing rather than crank up until it contacts the ground. Not a big deal I just touch with my toe until it hits ground. Also w/o a foot it sinks in soft ground.

Summmery... Great quality. Great if you need to crank low and compact. A bit too heavy duty for a really lightweight trailer.

by:

The product works perfectly with my teardrop trailer. It's adjustable in length so I can level my trailer when I park it. To remove the hitch from my car I can raise it up and let it slide off my vehicle. I have a wheel on the mount so I can just roll it away from my car. I am 100 lbs and can do this myself.

by:

I installed the trailer jack as soon as I received it and it has been working great for a year. I installed it on a 3,000 gallon water trailer.

Bulldog Jack-BD1541150301 -Product received as expected
Weld on jack pipe mount-BD015279 -Product received as expected
6" heavy duty caster - BDCP555 -Very disappointed w/ product received. The "6 caster on your website is shown w/ pin to attach to jack. The caster I received did not have the pin shown.Very disappointed.

i have a side mount jack welded to my boat trailer . as i did not want to weld on the trailer , i got this jack that has more lift and capacity than my old jack , removed the swivel part off the trailer , cut out the old tube , and welded on the new jack tube , this also let me set the down position where i wanted id . jack is ridged and cranks smoothly

by:

I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband. He is building a trailer for us to take on camping trips. He had mentioned that he was looking at this item for his project. I received it within a few days of placing the order (which is great since I am a notorious last minute shopper). Admittedly, I did not look at the item when it arrived, I just wrapped it up and put it under the tree. However, when my husband unwrapped it, even I was impressed. He's even more excited to get going on completing the trailer now. Perhaps I'll review again once it is complete... until then.. great job so far!

by:

Just what I needed to replace an older 1000lbs Bulldog jack on my snowmobile lift. I can now use a drill to raise/lower the lift without using the crank handle.

by:

I ordered the swivel jack and the 6- inch caster wheel to replace the skid plate on our trailer. The order was received in a timely fashion
and the company kept me informed with email updates.
I recommend this company to anyone needing help with their trailer.

  • Replacement Swivel Jack with Pipe Mount for Snow Plow
The Pro Series Round, Pipe-Mount Swivel Jack w/ Footplate - Sidewind - 10" Lift - 5,000 lbs # PS1401420303 has a 10-1/2 inch dimension from the center of the mount but is only 6-1/2 inches from the center of the mount to the top of the unit. This is the shortest length from base to mount. If you need clearance when not in use, I recommend inverting the jack. If you need that measurement for function, then I recommend resting your plow on something to allow the jack to swing into place...

  • Castor Wheel and Footplate for a Bulldog 2,000 Pound Capacity Round Trailer Jack
For a footplate, you can use Bulldog Detachable Footplate, # BD018564. This foot fits 2 inch diameter tubing on Bulldog 2,000 to 5,000 pound jacks. For a wheel, use Replacement, 6 Inch Caster, # BD500245. This wheel also fits on 2 inch diameter tubing. Because the capacity of the wheel is 1,200 pounds, it limits the jack capacity to 1,200 pounds as well.

  • Recommended Top Wind A-Frame Trailer Jack
The mounting bracket we sell for the Bulldog Round Jack, part # BD150000, you mentioned is not the weld on style triangular bracket you asked about. It is the Mount Tube for Bulldog Round Jack, part # BDPG9810-00. This attaches to the outer tube of the jack and has a round mount with a pin to secure it into place. I may have another option for you. I recommend the Pro Series Round A-Frame Jack, part # PS1400600303. This jack has a 5,000 lb lift capacity and has the triangular plate already...
