Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Mazda CX-9

Today on our 2011 Mazda CX9 we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the CURT Class 2 Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12112. So here's what our hitch looks like once you have it installed. Now we are gonna see the cross tube sticking out below the bumper just slightly. And it is a Class 2 Hitch so it's gonna give us that inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening. Now it has a nice reinforced collar, not only giving it added strength, but that nice clean, finished look. Our hitch is gonna use a standard half inch pin and clip which are included, which is nice, cuz we're not gonna have anything extra to pick up.

As far as the safety chain loops go it's gonna be a rolled steel stock style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. And as you can see we're not gonna have any trouble getting most size hooks on or off. Now I'd like to give you a few measurements that'll help you when deciding for accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost head to the bumper it's gonna be four inches. Now from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening it's gonna be 13 7/8 inches.

Now that we've gone over some of the features and benefits, let's show you how we get the hitch installed. To begin our installation I went ahead and removed our spare tire. And before we get our hitch in place I'd like to show you where it's gonna be mounting on the frame right here. We're gonna have three large holes. They're gonna have existing weld nuts in them and we're gonna have one small hole with an existing weld nut.

Now I'm gonna take a little bit of penetrating oil. I'm gonna spray it in each one of my weld nuts. Then I'm then I'm gonna come back and using a nylon brush I'm gonna start cleaning out the weld nuts to make sure that there's no debris, dirt or any rust in there. Now if you need one of these nylon brushes you can pick one up on our website. Now that we have this side clean we're gonna go ahead and clean the other holes on the other side of our frame.

I'd like to show you how we're gonna put our hitch up and the combination of hardware we're gonna be using. For the larger holes we're gonna be using the M12 bolt and that's gonna be followed by our 1/2 inch conical tooth washer. Now we're gonna slide the conical tooth washer over our bolt and you wanna make sure that the teeth on the washer are facing towards the hitch. And then for the smaller hole we're gonna be taking an M8 bolt followed by a 3/8 conical tooth washer. And that's gonna be going through the hitch and into the frame like this. Now with an extra set of hands we're gonna raise our hitch up into place and we can put our hardware in place. Now I'm only gonna put in one bolt on each side, just about hand tight so the hitch can support itself and I can get the rest of my hardware in place. With a 14 millimeter socket I'm gonna come back and tighten up my M8 bolts. For my M12 hardware I'm gonna be using a 19 millimeter socket to snug those up. I'm gonna repeat that for the other side as well. Now again using a 14 millimeter socket I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna torque down all my M8 hardware to the specified amount in the instructions. And with a 19 millimeter socket I'm gonna come back and snug up all my M12 hardware. And we're gonna find the torque specs in our instructions. Now we're gonna repeat that for all the remaining hardware. And that'll finish up our look at the CURT Custom Fit Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12112 on our 2011 Mazda CX9..

This hitch was very easy to install on my 2014 Mazda CX-9. Only one slight issue - when I lower the spare tire, I now have to jiggle the tire part way down to get it to come out all the way, but not a big deal. While the hitch looks good, it is not very noticeable under the car which is important to me. etrailer was the cheapest price I found, even less than Amazon, and free next day shipping. It was shipped UPS and the box was heavily damaged on receipt. No damage to the product, but I'm glad etrailer securely taped the hardware kit to the hitch otherwise it may have been lost. I'm very happy with this hitch.

I would love to give you all 5 stars, unfortunately, I was missing essential components to get the hitch installed, mainly the bolts and washers. Bag of bolts/washers that was attached to the hitch was all ripped so pieces all fell out and were loosed in the box. The box was then damaged in shipping so more than half of the parts fell out of box before it go to me. I did call and yes you are sending the missing parts but I already had an appointment to have hitch installed the same day I received it because I need to tow my camper, reason for the hitch. Anyway, I ended up going to hardware store to purchase the bolts and washer's needed, substandard product, did not have the hardness grade. I had hitch installed with these parts and when the new parts are received in mail will have to have it reinstalled with the parts that should have been used in the first place.
The hitch itself is nice, easy to install. Hopefully it will be just as easy to uninstall and reinstall with the appropriate bolts/washers if when the arrive.

I have ordered 3 hitches from etrailer in the last 5 years. They all work great, arrived without damage and fit my vehicle. I had to call about one of them I ordered to make sure it was the correct fit and spoke to customer service, they were very helpful. I appreciate the simplicity of the website as well. Thanks!

Great hitch for a great price
Got this
hitch for my wife's Mazda CX-9. Shipping was very fast.
I installed this hitch by myself in less than an hour. It helps to have some one support the hitch while you screw in the first few bolts. The only tricky part was getting the hitch into place due to the heat shields, but you just have to work at it. I removed the spare to give me some extra room which really helped.

Arrived earlier than expected and went on without a "hitch!" Just kidding - great service and product. So happy my FIL mentioned this company to me and recommended that I purchase from them instead of my normal go-to Amazon.

We haven't installed the hitch or electrical kit but everything arrived quickly. I plan on inventorying the box after Christmas and installing in January weather permitting.

  • Using a 1-1/4" to 2" Hitch Expander for a Bike Rack on a 2014 Mazda CX-9
To use a 1-1/4 to 2 inch hitch expander you first need to look at the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch on your 2014 Mazda CX-9. There should be a sticker on the hitch that lists the tongue weight capacity. The use of an expander will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. The combined weight of the bike rack and bikes will need to under the reduced tongue weight capacity. Another thing to consider is the bike rack itself. Not all bike racks are rated for...

I checked the dimensions on the Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9045, and found that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the bike rack when folded up is 3-1/2 inches. That would put the bike carrier so close to the back...
