Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Haul my dirt bike in a hitch rack and hitch is solid. Simple install and after 1-yr, no issues. I’d definitely buy it again and from etrailer.

1997 Toyota 4Runner

A true bolt-on 'custom fit' hitch for a 1997 4Runner is this DrawTite Max (model 75091). It uses the same bolt holes as the OEM hitch.

Originally, I had ordered the Curt, but was annoyed with the poor fit. The Curt hitch extends beyond the ends of the vehicle's frame, and requires a set of welded nut-plates to clamp the rearward bolt holes -past- the ends of the vehicle frame rails! This means the Curt hitch is positioned further back on the vehicle. The Curt hitch is shifted 6" to the rear of the factory holes. Not a 'custom fit' IMO.

We returned the Curt and are very happy with the DrawTite Max.

Also, the receiver tube on the DrawTite is a bit longer than the Curt. I consider this an advantage, and the spare tire still fits in front of it.

Perfect fit for 02 4Runner. If the 4 factory M12 bolts are rusted bad like mine were you'll have to purchase those. They are not included.

by:

Passenger side, forward most bolt was impossible to install without removing the exhaust pipe - which is a hard, hard job. So I had to drill a different hole through the hitch and the 4-Runner frame. Not too hard if you have the tools; but what should have been a 45 minute "install 6 bolts and I'm done" type of job extended into 2 hours. Again, not a huge deal, but with a little redesign on the part of Draw-Tite, this could have been, SHOULD HAVE BEEN, avoided. The exhaust pipe is in the same location on all Generation 3 4-runners - so the Draw-Tite designer should have anticipated this issue.

Secondly, Draw-tite probably should have made the hitch stick out about 3/8 of an inch further. Once installed, the clearance between the hitch and my standard size spare tire is about 1/16th of an inch. Not kidding, it is that close. Given standard manufacturing tolerances, I'll bet that the exact same hitch will not install on other 4-Runners; probably interfering with the spare tire by 1/16 - 1/4 of an inch. So, it worked out for me, but the design lacks reasonable dimensional margins which would guarantee that it will fit on all Gen 3 4-Runners. You might not be as lucky with your purchase.

2000 Toyota 4Runner

Product installed super easy in 30 minutes. All mounting holes met up with the factory holes in the frame of my 2000 4Runner. The only thing I was disappointed in was that when I opened the box the hitch receiver had 3 or 4 deep scratches that had gone all the way to bare metal, so before I installed it I put a new coat of paint on it. The box had not been damaged so I assume it was in that condition before they sent to me. The scratches are not going to affect the products usability but just annoying. Can't wait to use it.

1999 Toyota 4Runner

Installed on my 99 4Runner. Only significant problem was that holes in frame did not line up with blocks that were to be inserted along with handle nut. Decided to omit them. May have done the handle nuts differently if I had viewed the demo video on handle nuts first.
Instructions with the hitch are very limited, but it works.
Do wish that the receiver did not extend so far beyond the bumper, I Know someone is going to whack a shin on it.
Very quick delivery and nice looking product, great website support.

1999 Toyota 4Runner

I received my Draw-Tite hitch well packaged and on time. The installation was easy. There was no problem with the fit, spare tire and tailpipe cleared, I did have to remove the tailpipe rubber hanger temporarily to clear the inner most bolt during assembly. I'm very satisfied and saved almost a $100 bucks over buying and installation at a hitch store.

2001 Toyota 4Runner

Great service from etrailer. Easy ordering ... and trailer hitch shipped right way and arrived on time. Installed hitch today on my 2001 4runner. Perfect fit, no adjustments needed at all. Thanks for having a short video available on how to use the handle nuts ... made for a quick and easy installation.

1997 Toyota 4Runner

This is a perfect fit for my 1997 4Runner. Everything lined up beautifully. I didn't even have to remove the spare tire. The quality is outstanding, and it's obviously extremely strong. The hardware included was perfect. I also purchased the trailer wiring kit, which retrofit easily into the existing wiring - no cutting required, just snap into place. Overall very high quality gear and simple to install.

by:
2001 Toyota 4Runner

Hello, the hitch fit extremely well with no struggle but i did not put the wiring harness in because i soon realized that my truck had a stock harness and all i needed was the T-one connector.

This Draw-Tite hitch was an easy, at-home installation. It looks very nice on our 2002 4-Runner and functions well. We have not had any problems, safety or otherwise with this great hitch.

Super easy install. I am very happy the had a hitch mount for my older vehicle. This is the 4th hitch mount that I have ordered over the past few years and I have ALWAYS had fast and awesome experiences with Etrailer.com.??

by:
2001 Toyota 4Runner

Always receive fast delivery from eTrailer plus there products are always very good. My only issue with the Draw-Tite hitch for a 2001 4Runner was that the supplied bolts needed to be 1/2" or so longer to make it easier to start the nut that is welded to the long thin piece of metal. I purchased two 1/2" x 2" bolts and it made the install easier...

1996 Toyota 4Runner

this was the second hitch i have purchased from etrailer. Even the mechanic that installed the first one on my car was impressed with the quality and ease of installation.

by:

Perfect fit! Everything as advertised on their site. Installation was even easier and faster than expected. And the price was right! I’m about to order another hitch to replace a rusty one on another one of my pick up trucks.

by:
2002 Toyota 4Runner

Easy to install; no cutting of bumper. Clearance to tip of muffler is limited resulting in rattling on accelleration.

Having the hitch rattle against the exhaust is a pretty common occurrence that is easily remedied by slightly bending the exhaust hanger. The exhaust system at the rear of the car is attached to the vehicle using flexible rubber isolators and easily bendable exhaust hangers. Because of this, the actual position of the exhaust system can vary a bit from vehicle to vehicle. When the hitch is installed, its position is fixed, and will not vary from vehicle to vehicle. The large tolerances in the exhaust system is what can allow the rattle to occur. In other words, its not the fault of the hitch or its design. Youll just need to create a bit more space between the hitch and the exhaust, as explained in the help article Ive linked for you.

by:

Easy InstallInstallation was straight forward and easy. I did it myself using a few tools and heavy duty tiewraps to position the hitch in place. Total time was 1 1/2 hours including putting the tools away. It looks good on the truck too.

by:
1999 Toyota 4Runner

I was replacing a rusted out OEM hitch. I had new hitch installed within a half hour, and didn't even open the directions. Great fit, and is less noticeable then the OEM, is almost hidden from view accept for the receiver.

by:
2002 Toyota 4Runner

Well made, but the two most forward mounting holes on each side did not line up.

The mounting flanges on a trailer hitch are designed for straight line or front to back strength, not lateral or side to side strength. The flanges are actually designed to have some give in them, so they can flex along with the vehicle. If they get flexed during shipping they can be easily moved back into place. As long as the powder coat didnt crack and there arent any cracks in the mounting flange itself, the hitch will work just fine after being bent back into place. Ill link you to a help article that shows a few different methods of manipulating the hitch back into place.

Great product, bolted right on to my 4Runner, minor adjustments but definitely doable for my fellow DIY’s out there. I would definitely buy from etrailer again in a heartbeat.

Received yesterday, had it installed in about 1 hour.
Fit perfect. Getting the front bolts with the reinforcing plate was a bit of a challenge, but worked out ok.
Great product and support information.

  • Is There Trailer Hitch for 1999 Toyota 4Runner that has Over 450 lb Tongue Weight Capacity
We have hitches for your 1999 Toyota 4Runner like the Draw Tite part # 75091 which would have more than enough tongue weight as long as the 450 lb number mentioned also included a carrier as this hitch has a 500 lb capacity. You'd have to check the owners manual of your vehicle though for the vehicle capacity as well and be sure to stay under that number too. Due to the age of your vehicle I was not able to pull this up online.

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2001 Toyota 4Runner that Doesnt Interfere with Spare Tire
The Draw Tite Hitch part # 75091 is confirmed to fit your 2001 Toyota 4Runner and we had a customer write in a review saying that this hitch installs without any interference with the factory spare tire. The instructions for this product indicate that you might need to position the spare further forward, but that you would be able to retain the spare. You will be able to keep your spare with this hitch.
