Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2010 Mazda 3 - Draw-Tite 24842

Today on this 2010 Mazda 3, we're going to install part number 24842 from Draw-Tite. This is a class one, inch and a quarter receiver hitch. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on our Mazda 3. Next we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. Top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 11 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper will be about six inches.

Now, we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing we're going to do is get our vehicle ready. To do that, we'll need to go ahead and unbolt these straps that go to the bumper cover. We'll need a 10mm socket to remove those bolts. This will allow us to put the hitch up into place. Next we'll go ahead and show you where the hitch attaches to the vehicle.

It's going to attach at the bottom of these bumper supports right here, this hole and this hole and this large round hole here. Also by a tie-on loop here, we can use the hole right above it. This is the driver side. This will be the same on the passenger side. Before we install the hardware on the car, we'll go ahead and show you how it works with the hitch first. Going through the tie down bracket first, we'll get this 3/8ths bolt, flat washer, through the bracket and through the hitch.

On the other side, we'll get cone tooth 00:01:17 washer and we'll make sure the teeth on the washer always face towards the hitch and then the nut. Next, we'll go ahead and go to these fasteners here. This will be installed in the bumper structure, 7/16ths carriage bolt through the hitch. The bottom will get another cone tooth washer and nut. This hardware combination is going to be the same for this hole, this one and this one. Let's go ahead and install our hardware now.

We're going to install right here first. We'll take a bolt leader that comes with the hitch, run it through the hole we're going to use and we'll use one of these holes up here for an access hole. Take a block wood 00:01:56 and thread it through the wire and then we'll go ahead and thread in our bolt. Push the bolt back in, pull it out. Let's go ahead and do our hardware here and here. This one, I'm definitely going to leave my bolt leader in place. This is all the hardware I'm going to install on the passenger side. Let's do the same thing on the driver's side. Now, we'll go ahead and lift our hitch up in position. Definitely want to get an extra set of hands to help hold it up and run the hardware through the hitch. Ours is a pretty tight fit but the pry 00:02:47 pinching against the wire, so we just took a soft mallet and just tapped it right off. One set of fasteners holding the hitch up in place, we'll go ahead and install the rest of our hardware. Let's go ahead and pull our bolt back out and we'll install a cone tooth washer and nut. Be careful not to knock it back inside. When we're dong with our passenger side, we'll go ahead and finish up the hardware on the driver's side. Now, let's install our hardware here. Now our hitch is off just a little bit. That's why I leave all our hardware loose so we can move it around. We'll just use a screwdriver to line up the holes, then we'll install the hardware. With all our hardware loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten it down, then torque it down as specified in the instructions. With the hitch fully installed now, we'll go ahead and reinstall the fasteners for each strap. With everything tightened down, that will do it for Draw-Tite sports frame trailer hitch receiver, class one, inch and a quarter, part number 24842 on our 2010 Mazda 3. .

Great hitch receiver overall -- nice addition to my Mazda. Install proved to be a bit challenging when one of the fish wires got pinched between the hitch and the underbody, but that was probably operator error.

by:

Just as advertised. Fit is perfect. I installed it all by myself in about 30 minutes after watching the installation video. It is very doable.

A year on and it’s working fine. As advertised.

I got a class 1 trailer hitch for my mazda 3 and it's served me very well for over three years. Installation is slightly more difficult than shown in the video, just because I couldn't lift my car 5 feet in the air like they can. Still, my buddy and I got it attached in about an hour

This is my third trailer hitch purchased from eTrailer. They have all been used for hauling a couple of bikes. All the hitches fit perfectly. One was for a 1986 Camry, the other a 1993 Honda Accord. These were old cars, but etrailer had them. After both cars were sold, I bought the third trailer hitch for my 2011 Mazda 3. I made a mistake and had ordered one for the Mazda3 hatchback. I had the sedan. etrailer was very accommodating and allowed me to return the hitch and send me the correct one for my sedan. It fit perfectly.

This hitch is very easy to install. This is the 4th hitch I've installed on a vehicle and the others, although pretty simple themselves, were a little more time consuming than this one. I have a base model 2011 Mazda 3 sedan and it fit perfect. I backed the rear of the vehicle up onto ramps to get good ground clearance and was able to fish the hardware with the tools included and hold the hitch with jackstands and pieces of 2x4. I had to knock the hitch into place a little with a mallet, otherwise it fits nice and snug. I use the hitch for a bicycle rack primarily, so I didn't bother with a wiring harness install.

Still fine, however as with every hitch Ive installed, the paint is flaking. I would suggest, and will in the future, coat any hitch I install with better quality paint to slow the rustflaking as much as possible.

2012 Mazda 3

This is probably the 8th hitch I've ordered from e-trailer and installed myself. As always, pricing is excellent, items are high quality, and the instructions are good.

I really liked the little coiled bolt holding wires included in this kit. Made it really easy to get the insert plates & carriage bolts inside the frame. This hitch is also rather nice in that it's tucked way up behind the bumper, so you only see the receiver. Very clean.

My only minor complaint is that as always, the hitch was working it's way out of the cardboard box. No damage to it, but they really should reinforce the packaging a little more at the pressure points.

Thanks.

Brian

After a year, the hitch still looks great. It doesnt get heavy use- we only mount a bike rack on it a few times a year.

Products shipped fast, delivered when promised. Hitch went on without a hitch (pun intended). Everything was there in the box, everything fit. Light connectors were very easy, no issues with anything, and it was $225 less than the local hitch place quoted me to install. Next week it pulls a trailer with four mountain bikes and gear to Colorado for a week of riding and camping!

I use it extensively with a hitch mounted bicycle carrier. its very stable, easy to access and almost completely hidden under the bumper fascia. No rust, which means a lot from the Twin Cities Metro area in Minnesota. Lots of salt.

by:
2013 Mazda 3

I needed a hitch for my new, hitch mount, bicycle rack. This product appeared to be very solid and fit my Mazda 3 perfectly. I had it professionally installed at a local U-Haul dealer. My bicycle rack mounted easily onto the hitch.

Con: There was one spot on the hitch that showed bare metal. That was quickly and easily remedied with a couple of sprays of Rustoleum spray paint. However, I'm not sure if that paint will be as durable as the paint on the rest of the hitch. Although it might be harsh, I lowered my rating by one star for QC not catching that minor problem.

The hitch is working great. All Im using it for is a hitch mount bicycle rack for two bikes, which it handles easily as would be expected.

by:
2012 Mazda 3

The hitch is of excellent quality, all the fasteners were there, and it shipped very quickly. However, the installation instructions were not very thorough. The online videos helped, but nowhere did it mention that on my vehicle (2012 Mazda 3 Sedan) there is a fascia panel that must be removed and cannot be reinstalled with the hitch in position. Overall, very good, and the installation was not too difficult even for one person with the car on the ground.

After a year the hitch is fine and there are no signs of corrosion.

Went on fairly easy, took about an hour. Of course would have been way easier on a lift, but very doable in the driveway. Highly recommend having a second person to hold it up till you get a couple nuts started. My daughter filled in there. The real test will be next weekend, hauling a small rental trailer 160 miles for daughters start of college. One tool you should have not listed on instruction sheet, a torque wrench. Torques are listed for the bolts, very good idea to do that. You don't want this thing coming loose ! I have one so it was not an issue with me, but a lot of people don't.

We have used it twice, once to college

I bought this to tow a 5x8 UHaul trailer from South Carolina to Pennsylvania. I've never installed a trailer hitch before but the video along with the included instructions made it a breeze. My buddy and I had it installed in maybe 45 minutes, and half of that was spent looking for wrenches and jacking the car up. The hitch seems like very good quality.

One thing I'll say is when the hitch arrived it had torn giant holes in the box it came in. Not that I was worried about it getting damaged since it's a giant chunk of steel, but they might want to look into another packaging solution, especially since smaller included items could fall out.

2012 Mazda 3

Installation went smoothly with two people. It is a nice and tight fit so don't tighten bolts down until all of the bolts are in place. On my 2012 Mazda 3 I did have an additional plastic covering that was attached to the bumper supports that had to be removed and was not able to be put back on because that is where the hitch sticks down. I also installed the CURT C56175 wiring harness. This harness did not need a separate power line and hooks up to the wiring in the trunk. To remove the fasteners holding the trunk lining use a small flat screw driver to lift the INNER piece of plastic of the push pin.

This trailer hitch was on my doorstep 2 days after ordering it. Went to a mechanic friend to help install the hitch. New car, so I wanted to take a look under it. Hitch fit like a glove and took less than 20 minutes to install. Just followed the easy instructions, everything you need for installation was included.

Thanks again Andrew

Very easy and helpful

2013 Mazda 3

Showed up right on schedule. Hitch is nicely finished; smooth surfaces, clean edges, and smooth coating. Fit was perfect. I would recommend a second set of hands, although I think i could have done it myself if necessary. (A second set of hands made me more confident about NOT loosing a bolt and plate inside the frame.) The video instructions were very useful. We watched the tutorial, did a dry fit, checked a detail or two on the video, then did the installation. Went smoothly. The wire bolt threaders worked perfectly. (I would recommend you thread them through the bolt mounting holes on the hitch before removing them. Worked good for us.) Needed the rubber mallet for final alignment as suggested. Overall a very positive experience with the purchase and the installation.

by:
2012 Mazda 3

I ordered a trailer hitch with free shipping and I received it within 2 maybe 3 days. I found that to be very quick since I didn't pay to have it shipped. Trailer hitch was good quality and was mounted in under an hour no problems

by:
2013 Mazda 3

Hitch seems good so far. Installation was easy, but had an issue with the hitch itself as the receiver tube had globs of weld inside from the chain holders being welded on. The receiver would not slide in all the way to the pin hole. Had a hard time filing down the excess weld to make it fit.

by:

Easy to install. The directions were good and the mount was perfect for the vehicle. Used for a hitch-mount bike rack and has not warped or deformed at all. Great hitch.

by:
2010 Mazda 3

Customer service was great. The hitch required a little adjustment for it to fit properly, just a few love taps with a rubber mallet. Otherwise installation was easy.

It has been working flawlessly since installation, no rust despite new england driving.

2013 Mazda 3

My car is a 2013 Mazda 3. Took a little maneuvering but the hitch fit to the sub frame of the car. The wires that came with the kit for the bolts and washers work very well took a little bit but was easy to figure out. Sorry no pics was in a hurry to put it on the car. The video from the website really help me out give a great visual on how to put the hitch on to the car. Great product will recommend.

by:

Installation took me about 90 minutes - half of which was digging out the tools, getting the ramps, and putting the car on ramps. The hitch is used for a bicycle rack, and has been working fine. No problems.

by:
2012 Mazda 3

Very easy to install and the video from etrailer saved me a lot of time! The hitch works as promised on my bike rack.

Thanks etrailer!

by:
2012 Mazda 3

The product is great and etrailer.com has a wealth of information on how to do the install. Hitch receiver installed just as I expected it to.

Packaging was mediocre though. This resulted in the hitch receiver having broken through the box and with the paint being chipped away in some sections.

by:
2012 Mazda 3

Fits well. Fits a little loose with my bike rack though. Not sure if it's the bike rack or this that's not fitted properly.

Like any manufactured product, the inside dimension of the hitch receiver and the outside dimension of the bike racks shank can vary a bit. The receiver will generally a bit larger than 1-1/4 inches, while the hitch accessory shank will typically be a bit smaller. If the receiver opening is on the large side of tolerance, and the hitch accessory shank is on the small side of tolerance, the accessory will fit loosely. An anti-rattle device like part # F-315 will work if the bike rack has a hollow shank. If it has a solid shank, something like # RM-061-125 would be a good option.

by:
2011 Mazda 3

Bought this to use for a bike rack. Fit great and required no drilling, only took a half hour to mount. Most of the frame hides nicely behind the bumper cover.

  • 2010 Mazda 3 Hitch Cargo Carrier Recommendation for Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver
Yes, we do have some cargo carriers that will work with the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24842 you just installed on your 2010 Mazda 3. The carriers that are compatible with a Class I receiver are both from Curt with the part # C18145 and part # C18110. The main difference between them is the floor of the carrier. The first option has some higher side rails and more of an open floor while the second option has very low side rails and a mesh floor. Attached are review...
