It was hard to install the hitch. I contacted etrailer and got recommendation to use some more force to install the hitch. With the jack I was able to push the hitch into position. Now it won't move anymore, and I like how it is installed

It sounds like that the side brackets were knocked out of alignment which can happen while in transit to our facility or to you. We do have a FAQ that can assist with moving the side brackets of the hitch back into alignment to allow for installation.

Weve been using the hitch frequently for towing boats and bringing our bikes. Works nicely.

I was surprised at how easy the installation was on my 2018 Ford Transit. I did not experience any of the alignment difficulties I had read about in various reviews. After several trips towing my car trailer (approx. 5200lb gross weight) including a cross country and back trip there have been no problems with the Curt Trailer Hitch.

No problems. Very pleased with the Curt trailer hitch.

by:

The hitch was a little bit more work than normal to install, but nothing that average Joe can't handle. That said 4 hands would make it much better. I use my hitch for motorcycle le carriers. We have done a out 3000 Miles with 2 bikes on the hitch(about 500lbs) with the rack included and it's leveraged 4' out and have no issues at all. Great hitch

by:

The trailer hitch is working just great, It was easy to install if I remember right we did have to do some drilling but no big deal.

2019 Ford Transit Connect

Good hitch, not so good install. Installed on 2019 Ford Transit. Hitch is rated for more than Ford's towing weight spec's. But I like to go a bit bigger when possible. The four horizontal bolts and the two passenger side vertical bolts lined up perfect. The two vertical bolts on the driver side did not line up well. The rear vehicle favored bolt hole needed to be enlarged on the hitch and truck to line up. This required putting the hitch up and down checking bolt fit. This was not easy since the spacial sizing of the hitch is a bit off. The side to side dimension of the hitch is about 1/8" too wide to fit between the frame rails of the truck. 1/8" is not much, but with tolerances between steel on steel it makes a big difference. It's easy to see what is wrong. The frame rails have an extra reinforcement metal wrap on a portion of the passengers side. Due mostly to the factory tow hook mount (tow hook needs to be removed and is not stated in instructions - reinforcement mount cannot be removed). A measurement between the rails not including the reinforcement area would match the hitch dimensions. A measurement between the rails including the reinforcement would be 1/8" or so less. Perhaps Curt engineers did not account for the reinforcement. The attached pictures show a single layer frame rail on the drivers side and a triple layer reinforced frame rail portion on the passenger side. This required me to use a hydraulic floor jack to press fit the hitch into place. This coupled with the misaligned bolt holes made for unnecessary complexity. Removing the hitch to enlarge holes required bar leveraging to squeeze the hitch back down, then jack back into place check alignment, than leverage down, drill, repeat. Again, good hitch, not so good engineering.

by:

Installation was a breeze, been on vehicle for a year and works as desired. Thank you again etrailer for the fast and easy shipment and ordering.

by:

Do not buy. Not even close to fitting. Does not fit between a 2021 Ford Transit 250 frame rails. And the holes on the tabs were 5/8" from aligning with the frame holes. Also if I drilled out the tabs to make it fit, there would only be 1/4" of material left on the tab. Am returning mine. Upsetting.

From your photo, it looks like you have a cutaway model or cab and chassis which this hitch does not fit.

Product is solid, directions were fairly clear (had to deviate a little for a whole that was not exactly as described), and the whole purchase to delivery was painless.

Good product. It was a bit tight to install, but I'm satisfied. This is the second hitch I bought here. Packaging should be done better.

by:

Purchased and self-installed this hitch. Installation was a breeze with the eTrailer vehicle specific installation video. The hitch is Made in the USA and it shows. We’re very happy with the quality of the hitch and the overall experience with eTrailer. We highly recommend eTrailer for the DIY’r.

by:

Solid hitch- but was a little more difficult to install than I hoped.
I ended up using iron worker’a spud wrench to force the hitch into place. Also, recommend that only after it is in place that the 2 back holes be drilled. My 2023 didn’t have the small hole on one side. The one little hole I did ream out had the be moved to fit. Large torque wrench was critical in getting it all tightened up correctly.
The fishing wire provided for getting bolts in place worked brilliantly!!

by:

Good Hitch, except on a 2018 350 xlt with the rear step bumper, the width is a slight bit too wide considering the bumper brakets also being attached to the rear tube frame. Actually, No amount of sledge hammering would cause the hitch to slide in between the two frame members. I had to actually jack the hitch up and the weight of the van forced the hitch inbetween the tube members. it had to be lined up perfectly before this otherwise the bolt holes wouldn't line up and the whole installation was screwed because there was no amount of sledge hamering that would budge the hitch. Also some of the holes were too small for the bolts and had to be drilled out. This all should have been in the instructions, but was not. The 30 min. installation took 3 hours.

The installation is more involved install. I recommend watching the video that we have on a 2019 Ford Transit T350.

by:

Apparently either there have been some changes in the newer transits or the extended body models use a different rear bumper and mounting system. the drivers side was as shown in the instructions as far as drilling out a small hole in the frame/bumper mount but the passenger side had a "recovery hook/loop" that needed to be removed.
I installed the hitch using the 4 bolts adjacent to the spare tire (loosely) to make sure everything lined up and drilled the holes once the hitch was in place. The drivers side used the hole that needed to be enlarged but the passenger side had no small hole so I used the hitch as a guide. I installed the bolt and reinforcement and found that one of the weld nuts inside of the frame for the recovery loop interfered with the reinforcement plate seating flat inside the frame I was able to draw the nut down to the 110 FtLb spec without a problem but I would think the plate that goes inside the frame could be trimmed on one end to allow it to seat properly inside of the frame.
Other than that the hitch fit nicely and is tucked up fairly well under the bumper. The finish on the hitch is very nice as well!
Sorry I did not take any photos during the installation!

2022 Ford Transit T350

Installed on a 2022 350HD Crew extended drw. Everything fit perfectly except the bolt hole on the receiver does not line up with the small hole on the drivers side that the instructions say to enlarge. I had to enlarge the hole off center which was not easy to do.

The package arrived within the expected time frame. The box was slightly damaged but the hitch appears fine. All the bolts etc was present. Something I did not anticipate is the weight of the hitch and lifting it in place while bolting as well as the need for a torque wrench. After some consideration I decided to have a mechanic instal the hitch for me. Hopefully he can do it in one hour of shop time. If I had a lift and a helper I'm sure I could do it in an hour or less.

Jim

3/12/2020

Used the hitch to hold a heavy duty bike rack on a 6000 mile trip. No issues. I dont anticipate any problems. The hitch feels like it is part of the trucks frame. The vehicle is a Ford Transit 350 converted to a camper. The cost to have a pro instal the hitch was $100. That did not include wiring for a trailer. Estimate on a pro wiring job is another $100.

The receiver hitch was not packed very well for shipping .It should have been braced with inexpensive wood to keep it from being damaged during shipping .It arrived sprung as if it was bent during shipping .Making it very difficult to install . Would not buy another one.

That is frustrating that the hitch arrived flexed like that. This is a common issue we face in shipping hitches. I wanted to share a link to a help article about how to straighten a hitch out that has been flexed in transit. I hope this helps!

by:

I have installed many hitches and this one was rated as easy. It did not fit well between the frame rails and I had to use a hydraulic jack on both sides to allow weight of van to push into place. The end product is acceptable but not made to fit 2020 Transit.

This hitch is a confirmed fit for your 2020 Ford Transit T250. But please note that the hitch will not fit a cab and chassis or cutaway models.

by:

No problems with function. It was a tricky install compared to the less heavy duty version I helped my friend install on his because of the angled metal on this one, but it can just barely go on. We broke all of the screw grabbers and then we're able to finally get the screws through with one of his.

Hitch arrived very quickly and as described. Instructions were ok, some of the steps were confusing because they were miss labeled. Drilling the rear 1/16" holes to 9/16" was no big deal. Fishing the carriage bolts and female carriage plates through the frame rails was frustrating, but only the two near the bumper. Now the real concern... the 1/16" holes once enlarged, did not align with the hitch "tabs". I would recommend mock fitting the hitch with the four 15mm Ford bolts prior to drilling the 1/16" frame rail holes, this will ensure the 9/16 hole is properly aligned and possibly ease fishing the rear carriage bolt into the frame rail, DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR THIS, PLEASE CONFIRM FOR YOURSELF. This should be clear if the instructions are combined with these notes and save about an hour. Even then, I can't imagine a "novice" could could install in the suggested half hour. I am giving this product 4 stars because it seems to be a 5 start product from a solid 5 star distributor (etrailer), if the instructions didn't lead you to frustration after 90% of the job was completed.

Consider conferring with e-trailer for wiring kit for lights and brake controller. I'm into my second day on that part of the project and local suppliers have my spinning in circles.

by:

I believe this is an excellent hitch, but there are install items to be noted. It does not fit easily into place. Also, the hitch will span a section of the existing frame that contains two pieces of steel, that creates a high center. You will need to use clamps to align the forward most holes, and drill completely new holes, rear most. A suggested tool of a 3 lb sledge hammer is needed. Also, the video that is posted should not be followed. I suggest following the video, to remove the spare tire, as well as the four bolts that are attached to the frame. The correct order to install is to then 1) pound the hitch into place, so the removed bolts can be lightly threaded. 2) you will then need to c-clamp the (van) most forward ends of the hitch to the frame, so those two bolt holes align with the existing holes in the frame, 3) wire feed the rectangular washers and new bolts into those holes, 4) remove the wire feed, and lightly thread the nut on those bolts 5) pound the (van) rear part of the hitch into a position that is as close as you can get to the frame. 6) dremel the elongated hitch hole, as far the the rear as you can, make it wide enough to to accept a 9/16 drill bit 7) drill a 9/16 hole inside the elongate hitch hole, and through the van frame 8) paint the new hole for rust prevention, 9) fish wire the rectangular washer and new bolt through the new hold and hitch 10) lightly thread nut on this/these rear most bolts 11) tighten each new nut/bolt to torque specs12) tighten upper frame bolts to torque specs 13) reinstall spare

2015 Ford Transit T350

The product materials say a professional will take 15 minutes to install this hitch and an amateur will need 30 minutes. My father and I are apparently incompetent because this took us a few hours.

Some other reviewers have noted that the two holes you need to drill larger do not line up with the hitch. I had to expand these two holes towards the center of the vehicle. We also had to jack the hitch into place because the fit was way too tight.

In theory this hitch has a good design and straightforward installation. I felt that the materials were high quality and the kit came with everything I expected. However, the manufacturer needs to fine tune the design to better fit the vehicle.

Note: I had to ask my dad to bring over a larger breaker bar to remove the factory bolts for installation. This is not a problem with the product, but a note on our installation experience.
