If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.
The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.
Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this Kodiak 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes, so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Or, if you already have disc brakes, this will be a great way to upgrade that finish on your disc brakes to make sure that they're going to last a nice long time for you. So, this set is going to include the two brake assemblies here. So, it will allow you to upgrade a single 7,000 pound capacity axle with the number 42 spindles.
Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and you can see we've got the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern with these five eighth inch diameter wheel bolts. And so, this will work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger. Our hubs and rotors as well as our calipers, and our caliper mounting brackets all have a dacromet finish. So, they are going to offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance with a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating. So, these are going to be great for your boat trailers, or trailers that are used in coastal areas, or on heavily treated roads where they're going to have a lot of contact with salt and that sort of thing.
So, if you're looking at your good, better, best, sort of scenario, dacromet is near the top in my opinion. The only thing really higher than this is a stainless steel construction. and of course, with the higher quality you're going to have a higher price. And so, these are going to do a really good job for you and be a little bit less expensive than your stainless steel. They are going to be better than your e-coat or definitely better than having an unfinished hub and rotor assembly.
So, these are going to do a really good job, be a great upgrade if you already have disc brakes and you're wanting a better finish. And, if you are switching from having drum breaks to disc brakes, you are going to notice a vast improvement in your performance of your brakes. Disc brakes are going to help dramatically shorten your stopping distance. We've got these ceramic brake pads here that are going to provide increased stopping power. There is a two and a half inch diameter stainless steel piston that provides a fast responsive braking experience.
So, it is going to provide smoother, more controlled braking for you. It's going to help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling like you often experience with your drum breaks. And, in addition to better performance, these are also going to require less maintenance. So, it is going to help save you time and money over the long run. Having that one piece hub and rotor assembly is going to reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear, and the vented design here on the side, helps to dissipate heat faster, so it's going to help prevent premature brake pad wear. Now, your brake pads will need to be replaced eventually. They will wear down over time. But, that's a pretty straightforward process. And, you're not going to have the springs like you do with your drum brakes. So, a lot fewer components that could fail and need to be replaced. And, these are a high quality automotive grade construction, so they are going to be very long lasting. These are going to help reduce the maintenance and save you time and money over the long run. Now the one caveat with disc brakes is that they do require a higher line pressure. So, you are going to need to make sure that you've got a hydraulic brake actuator, and brake lines that are rated for 1500 psi or higher. And, that's pretty uncommon for your trailers that are set up for drum breaks. So, it might take some doing to get that all converted over. If you don't already have hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines rated for 1500 psi or higher, we do have those available here at etrailer.com. Obviously, they're not included in this kit, so this isn't going to be everything that you need, but it is going to include the two dacromet plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight pre-installed, five eighth inch wheel bolts on each. You're also going to get 16 of these five eighth inch zinc plated steel lug nuts to hold your wheel in place. You'll get the two dacromet plated cast iron calipers, as well as the two dacromet plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. These do have the five bolt brake flange configuration, so they are going to be very easy to get mounted on your axle with those five bolts. Now, I do want to point out that I've got this mounted on top for balance and display purposes. When you actually go to install it, it is going to be mounted on the side. That side support design puts all the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on your bolts, so it helps your bolts last longer. The four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts are also included. You're going to get your inner and your outer races. Those are pre-installed already, so you don't have to worry about that. You'll get your inner and outer bearings, that will fit in those races. Make sure that everything's moving smoothly, rotating around like it should. This kit is lubricated with grease, so you're going to get your two grease seals for the inside, and then your two easy lube grease caps for the outside. And, these grease caps do have that rubber plug on them, that you can remove to access your easy lube spindles, pump some grease in there, in between your normal maintenance. So, keeps everything well lubricated and moving along. So, like I said, definitely going to be a huge upgrade if you're switching from drum brakes to disc brakes. And, even if you have disc brakes already, you're wanting to have a higher quality finish, this dacromet finish is going to hold up really well for you. So, that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
