Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Great Quality. Quick Installation and very easy to take off. Self-tensioning worked like a charm. I would definitely recommend them.

I bought these to use on my 2023 Rav4 TRD Off-Road OEM Falken AT Tires.

I highly recommend installing them at home a few times before heading up. Watching the etrailer videos on YouTube was also a huge help.

Winnebago

Based on installation, five stars. They can be passed between the gap on dual rear wheels, although it is tricky. Have not used them in a snow/ice situation yet and hopefully will never have to do so with my Winnebago View 24D.

by:

I'll be honest, you don't need tire chains until you need tire chains and I have yet to use them. I do feel good knowing they are in my van and that I will be getting up my driveway if the weather gets bad at work. I really like the design.

by:

They are not easy to remember how to install, so you must keep the instructions close by. That said, they got me out of a very icy situation in Vermont last year when my tires became encased in solid ice after a night of icy rain on top of a foot of snow. I had to lay the chains flat on the ice and tuck them into the wheel divots as much as possible to get my SUV out. After I freed the vehicle, I just installed them per the instructions and was able to handle the rough conditions without issues. I did feel that I should have probably purchased 2 pairs of chains, but AWD plus one pair apparently was enough.

by:

The instruction manual's pictures made it easy to install. After going through the installation of the chains once for practice, they should be able to be installed in under 10 minutes per chain. It should be worth getting the self-adjusting type of chain.

by:

Great product, works exactly like the video says!
I highly suggest you put them on at home in daylight and don't wait until you absolutely need them! Installing for the first time in the dark, 3 feet from trucks going past is not the most pleasant experience.

by:

Initially, I thought they were way overpriced. Boy was I wrong. BEST. CHAINS. EVER. Ease of use while on the side of the interstate was very evident as we were in and out before many others were still figuring out how to unravel their chains. WORTH. EVERY. PENNY. So much so that I ordered a second set to replace the older ladder-type chains in my second vehicle.
You may second-guess the price; however, you will be glad you spent the money after (quickly) installing them the first time.

I am very happy that etrailer managed to deliver my chains even one day earlier than the estimated time, despite it was around Christmas and weather had been bad. I just did a test run with it, super easy to install. I will share more once we’re back from our winter trip.

Fantastic chains and we had a doozie of a winter last year. Easy to get on and off. Self adjusting feature is not optional in my view.

by:
2017 Nissan Rogue

Went on quick and easily. I watched the installion video provided by etrailer. Exactly what you see, my only advice is be very careful to make sure the chains are spread out and completely untangled. If any links are crossed or tangled it won't go on correctly. Also l would recommend practicing putting them on once or twice. Once you have done that you can literally put them on in 5 minutes. The chains look very durable and quality materials. I got these for a predicted bad winter this year l will update after l get a chance to use them.

2004 Chevrolet Express Van

Two minutes. Yes, that is how long it took to put these chains on the tire. I didn't believe the other reviewers' reviews, but found out for myself that it's true. Everything is done from the outside of the tire. Brilliant design! Obviously, it's too early to tell how they will fare in the snow & ice this winter, but things are looking really good!
I bought two sets: one for our Lexus RX350 and one for our Chevrolet 2500 Express van. Both sets fit perfectly. They even supply gloves & a mat to kneel on when putting them on so as not to get wet.
Also, the chains arrived in two days...ahead of schedule.

(The pic shows the Lexus installation, but the Express van installation looked the same.)

Relatively easy to install, though it helps to install and remove several times to get a good feel for how to put on quickly. Product seems well-made; very sturdy. Now, just waiting for the snow.

What I think is that etrailer has terrific customer support, and you can buy from them with confidence that they will resolve any issues you have with your purchase, whether it be an exchange or refund. I think their prices are fair, but honestly I bought my chains from them with questions whether they would fit or not (they did fit), but knew if they didn't, etrailer would make it right. I know what I am saying is true as in the past I bought a hitch that didn't fit, and purchased a different hitch. They also have great technical expertise and will help you choose the right product. I've never installed chains before, and pulled up a [online] video from. etrailer which was better than the Konig manufacturer. Highly recommend this company!

by:

Quick to ship and high quality. Very sa tisfied.

by:

They go on, SO EASY!! BUT. :( I've used the about 10-15 times so far and quite a few of the cross-link bars have snapped and separated (the links that hold the opposite sides together). I reached out to Konig for the "5 year warranty" but haven't heard anything back (1+ week) since submiting my claim. Super dissapointed. $XXX chains should last more than a few uses. Warranties should be honored.

very fast delivery and wonderful chains. I would suggest watching a couple of the videos that show installation, because the directions included are somewhat cryptic. I have a driveway that is impossible to get up when snow covered with my front wheel drive Ford Maverick. with these Konig chains, no problem! Very slick design that are easy to put on and take off,.....once you know the system.
