Questions on Using Glacier Snow Chains # PWPLC1142 on 2007 Kia Sedona EX with 235/60R17 Tires

Question:

I have a 2007 Kia Sedona EX w/ 235/60 R17 Tires. I have a few questions on snow chains. 1. What is the maximum speed for snow chains? 2. I know they are ok for local roads, but are they allowed to be used on highways? 3. Is there a single trip maximum distance one can use these with, what I mean is if I find myself 100 miles away from home and a blizzard hits, can i drive 100+ miles on them in one trip? 4. When installed correctly with tensioners, does using snow chains cause any damage to tires and/or vehicle? Thank you for your help.

Driving speed should be reduced whenever conditions require the use of snow chains: if road conditions justify snow chains, they also justify driving more slowly. Tire chains do in fact have speed limit ratings that must be observed to protect the chains themselves, your tires and rims, your vehicle and for your personal safety. These speed ratings may vary from one brand/type of chain to another, but generally the recommended driving speeds for tire chains range from 30 - 40 mph. No chain allows normal speed driving in snowy or icy conditions.

Tire chains are allowed on both local roads and highways, subject to laws that may vary from state to state. The two linked snow chain articles cover much important safety information, regulations by state and the different types of products offered.

There is no formal maximum distance for a given trip when tire chains are in use but it is important that any tire chain be installed correctly and used within its capacities. No tire chain should be driven on a bare road.

Certain tire chains have provisions to protect your rims from abrasion or other damage but this is not the case with all. There are chains that need manual tensioning (with added adjusters) while others offer assisted tension control.

Finally, snow chains do wear out, and the axium "you get what you pay for" applies here. Better, long lasting chains cost more and last longer. For a 235/60-17 tire, I would recommend the Konig # TH01594245 chains. They are self-adjusting so they do not require rubber tensioners. They have steel D-link chain links and have rim protection. These are also low profile S-Class chains that work on most vehicles.

I suggest you begin with a review of your Sedona owners manual for any restrictions or guidelines regarding the use of tire chains.
