Installation

Installation Step 1

1. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.

Installation Step 2

2. Connect the yellow and blue cable at the back of the tire.

Installation Step 3

3. Push the cable into place behind the tire and center the cross chains on the tire's tread. Then, on the front side of the tire, join the 2 ends of the yellow side chain using the green hook.

Installation Step 4

4. Feed the silver draw chain with the rubber tensioner through the red channel at the bottom and pull it tight. Then run the tensioner through the red rings. (Note: Depending on your tire size, you might not be able to thread through both rings.) Pull the tensioner across the tire and fasten it to the yellow chain on the opposite side.

Installation Step 5

5. Pull your vehicle forward and retighten the chain.

Class "S" Designation

SAE Class "S" tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class "S" chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2012 Audi Q7

I bought these chains because of the low clearance between my tire sidewalls and the vehicle's front suspension. They worked great for alleviating this issue - there were no issues with clearance. The chains are well made, but they require patience to put on. Be sure that they're are 100% untwisted and laid out before attempting to install; I had a few links twisted the wrong direction (hard to see) and the chain would not stretch around the tire. Once properly and cleanly laid out the install went well. I installed these chains on 275/45/20 tires, and the fit was extremely tight - no need to thread the tensioner links through both eyelets. The rubber bungy barely stretched adequately to reach a suitable attach point - this is okay, just unexpected relative to the instructions packaged with the chains. Oh, be sure to have the vertical chain links 100% aligned in the MIDDLE of the tire before attempting to piece together the yellow sidewall chain on the outside. The chains are straightforward to install, but PLEASE practice in your garage before you need to do so in a snowy location on the side of a highway.

Great customer service and super quick turnaround.

These are great chains that have not failed me yet after a handful of uses. It is not too difficult to put on the tires if you read and practice ahead of time.

I wouldn't have thought to go to etrailer for Tire chains, but they had a great product at A very fair price.
As always they sell only quality products that work.

I have only used them once, it was a low snow year in NM last year. They worked well, but I really didnt need them that day, I just wanted to try them. They stayed on, didnt make too much noise, but limited me to 30 mph which is pretty hard for me to do! I like having them in my trunk when going into the mountains just in case.

2015 Ford Explorer

After trying unsuccessfully to locate tire chains for our 2015 Ford Explorer I turned to the Internet. The first company to come up on the Google search was etrailer.com. They had the chains I was looking for and shipped them the same day. I have not yet attempted to install them; however, they are just what I expected, based on past experience.

While Ive had the tire chains for about a year Ive not had the need to use them. Our winter last year was particularly mild and therefore minimal snow. This year however, we are told that we might have a more significant snowfall. Well see if we need them this year!

Somewhat difficult to install on the road so strongly suggest trying it prior to snowstorm. It worked great in some really soft snow which would have been nearly impossible to traverse without these chains.

Thank you!I am very happy with the quality of the snow chains. The customer service from etrailer was excellent.

2019 Toyota Highlander

I purchased these chains a year ago but used them for the first time on a ski trip to Lake Tahoe in early February 2019. The winter storm had dumped 6 feet of snow by the time we were to drive home. Snow chains were required to drive back out of the area. My husband had them placed on the car by a local tire store by our hotel (there is a learning curve to place these chains on properly) and proceeded to drive down the mountain. They work rather well to stabilize our car for the drive. We have an all-wheel Toyota Highlander Hybrid so had them place the chains on the front tires as instructed.

Later down the mountain, I personally removed them after we got out of the snowy area. They were a little tricky getting them off but since I had practiced at home putting them on and off again, I had some experience. I used to live in Illinois so have had lots experience with older type chains- just drive over and connect which are just as easy to remove them when your done with them. Good for short slow drives.

These 'quick cable attach' chains (as the tire people called them) are a little more challenging but seem more secure once on than the old type for a long slow drive out of the mountains. Just remember there is a learning curve to attaching them correctly so PRACTICE attaching and detaching them BEFORE you get into the snow and really need to put them on in a hurry.

The clam shell carrying case (sturdy and well made) that the chains come in is very convenient and will also hold a pair of gloves, knee pads and extra multi-arm rubber tire chain adjusters, if you think you need them (FYI each is shaped like a six-armed octopus LOL). The case has pictured instructions and to help you with attaching the chains. You can also access videos from their website for learning purposes.

I would have rated these chains a 5 star except for the learning curve and not super ease of getting them on and off for a new user.

Although the chains installed easily, there was a defective weld on one of the links. The loose chain flailed around and knocked a brake line fitting off of my left front wheel. Lost brake fluid and no brakes. Still in the process of working out warranty claim between e- trailer and Titan chains

Toyota Highlander

I ordered these chains immediately after purchasing my Highlander. Naturally, it has not snowed heavily since then. However, I have practiced installing the chains, and they are relatively easy to get on the tires. The proof will be installing them in the snow on the side of the road sometime in the future. I will write back then and give a "real world" review. I have nothing but positive feedback for the seller. His response was quick and accurate.

Super easy to put on and waaaay quieter that my old ladder style chains

by:

We purchased some snow chains. We did what was recommended by the etrailers representative, which was to try putting them on the car before we actually got into snow country. We were very glad we took her advice. Coming from California we didn't have any experience in putting chains on, but with the step by step pictures we were able to figure how to put them on in about 1/2 hour. It was very simple. We haven't used them yet, but they look like they will work great.

Thanks

2012 Toyota Highlander

Quick delivery! Great details and install video made our first (trial run) installation easy. Product seems to be of high quality and storage bag for before and after (messy) use is nice.
Should make the move to the mountains of Montana a bit safer this upcoming winter. (2012 Toyota Highlander)

2018 Chevrolet Colorado

I use these on a 2018 2-wheel drive Chevy Colorado. I live in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan where snow is generally measured in feet, not inches. These chains work extremely well. The only issue, and it's not a real serious one, is that if at all possible put them on on a dry clean surface if possible, don't wait until your stuck, because they are a little difficult to put on in those conditions.

by:

Absolutely delighted with Etrailer.com. Called them to discuss which snow chains would be best for my car. I received excellent advice and was not recommended the most expensive chains but the ones that best fitted my needs. The chains were sent promptly and I received them within 2 days of my order. Nicely packaged. The product looks exactly like the one I ordered from the website. I would recommend Etrailer.com to anybody - good product range, well-priced, excellent customer service and speed of delivery - the full package. And there is a video showing you how to fit the chains - whatelse could you wish for?

by:
Volkswagen

The chains fit on the tyres, and instructions were easy enough to get them fitted at home. We have a Volkswagen Atlas with 20" wheels and when the chains are fitted there seems to be very little tolerance between the snow chain and top of suspension strut at the top of the wheel, so will see how it goes the day that I need them, maybe I should not have looked but thats a concern. Will never back if it becomes an issue.

by:
Toyota Highlander

I don't know if it was the chains or the snowblower I bought but there just was no snow here in Colorado. We had one storm with about 3 inches. You can ask me again next year when the chains might come out of storage in my Highlander.

2015 Acura MDX

I chose this model of chain for my 2015 MDX because it seemed simple to install after viewing eTrailer's video. As soon as I received my order I tried installing it. I've never installed chains before, but after watching the video 2 or 3 times, it was as simple as can be.

Thanks for shipping our my order so quickly!

Fantastic service and product line

by:
2016 Ford Edge

Although the chains do fit my Ford Edge, there is very little clearance. I have an all wheel drive and hope I never have to use them. Living in California, chains are required to be carried in your vehicle when traveling in the mountains and they do have check points where they stop all vehicles and check for chains. Now I will be covered when heading North on Interstate 5.

by:

I've had to use them a couple of times now. Watch out when folding and unfolding, or else watch your language if there's children present.

Other than that, they're easily installed/removed. Fit is great for my vehicle/tires. Cinched them and didn't have to re-adjust after driving a few yards.

I would recommend oiling after use and before storing to ensure no rusting. Mine haven't rusted because that's what I did.

I would purchase these again.

by:

Easy to put on, especially in bad weather. Disintegrated in one winter and one broke during a blizzard forcing me into a snow bank. Good idea but poor quality and potentially dangerous

For your 2013 Toyota Highlander with 245/55-19 tires the tire chain set that I recommend is the Titan Chains Alloy Snow Tire Chains # TC2324. The Titan chains use a diamond pattern design to help cover more area of the tread. The diamond pattern will give you better traction in ice and snow over the ladder design there is more chain touching the pavement which makes for better traction and stopping power. Using only one set of chains on your 2012 Toyota Highlander will not hurt the engine. Typically just one set is used as you really only need chains on the drive wheels. If your Highlander is a front wheel drive model, this is where they should be used. However, if you have an all wheel drive model, we do recommend using the chains on the rear wheels. This is due to chains not lasting as long when they are on front wheels as turning will add some stress on them and wear them out quicker. With...
