Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Previously my only experience with chains was using cable chains on front wheel drive cars, where turning the wheels was necessary to ensure they had a good fit.

I bought these chains for my 2023 Kia EV6 with stock 235/55/19 tires. The instruction manual for the car says to put chains on the rear wheels and I was worried that getting chains on the rear wheels would be difficult. Despite never having used this style of chains before I was easily able to test-fit both chains with 15 minutes, and the chains fit very snuggly and didn't move when I move the car a cars length. Getting the inner loop positioned right is something that took a couple tries to get right, and I'm sure there might be a bit more room for improvement :)

I was slightly concerned about the chains damaging the rims or other parts of the car, but with the included spacers (not applied in the picture) I think this won't be a problem.

I'm taking the car up to the snow this weekend and if I use the chains I'll provide an update.

etrailer did a great job clearly communicating to me when my chains would arrive with no fuss.

I purchase the chains for when I go to Colorado. Driving thru Wyoming they required chains when going over some of the mountains passes. I like the how easy they are to put on and take off.

2/14/2024

Worked pretty good. Easy on and off. No other issues.

by:

i bought these chains because I have used them before on my previous car, and they work extremely well on hilly, snowy, and icy roads. They are also very fast and easy to install and remove, although it’s a good idea to fit them before you need them, and note if the adjustment links must be used on your tires. They fit perfectly on mine first try. The self-tensioning feature has also been improved since I bought my last set.

2015 Land Rover Evoque

Great product. Konig tire chains fit great. Easy install.Just what I needed.

by:

Had these chains for my last vehicle but when I purchased a new car needed to get a larger size chain. Easy to put on and take off. Practiced a few times before I ventured out and felt confident this 66 y.o. Grandma could handle them myself.

by:

I love these chains, and etrailer is the best! As a 69 yr old retired grandma, I work part-time at a ski resort. A few weeks ago, we were expecting 8-10 inches of snow/ice and I was scheduled to work. So, I put these idiot-proof, color-coded, self-adjusting chains on my Highlander front low profile tires and waited for weather. See photo. I worked my full shift, came out to ice/snow in dark, and drove safely home. Oh, and the carrying case comes with a folded plastic sheet, but with my old knees I added a foam pad!

2019 BMW X3

Looks like a good fit for my BMW X3 xDrive 2019 245/50/19 run flat tires. Just put one of them on the wheel to make sure no surprise when I really need to use them. I can’t provide a snow drive feedback as of now

2002 Toyota Tundra

I had previously purchased chains from another company. They said they were “easy on and easy off”. I spent a couple of weeks trying to get them on, and had a couple of strong men try to help me without success, before I returned them. I was skeptical when I ordered these, but THE KONIG CHAINS ARE GREAT!! It took me less than 10 minutes to put on each chain - and I’m a 68 year old grandmother. The videos showing how to put them on were wonderful. I didn’t have to read the instructions. The chains fit perfectly. I have a half mile gravel driveway that has become very icy the last couple of winters. Even 4WD vehicles with studded tires have trouble climbing it. With these chains on, my old 4WD Toyota Tundra made it with ease - and the ice is thick. I am very pleased. I plan to order more for my other two vehicles.

by:

My driveway is insane to get up in the winter and I have to use chains for it.
I have used a lot of chains and these are the most convenient that I have found to put on and take off with the exception of ones that drape over and have the little cable under tension that gets pulled under. Those are easier but they are far less durable and have more potential points of failure in my estimation. These are the chains I would recommend for both traction and ease of use.

2018 Toyota Highlander

I live in Southern California so the need for chains is only when we want to go into the mountains. I have over the last 20+ years owned 3 different sets of chains. I decided to splurge on buying these because they looked so easy to install. I only practiced putting them on one time before heading into the mountains with my family. Chains were required and in less than ideal conditions (wind blowing, wet snow and temperature around freezing and being on the side of the road, it took me about 5 minutes per tire to install them. If I practiced putting them on three or four times, I am confident I could cut this time down in half. I know these are expensive compared to other manufacturer's products, but am I happy I bought these chains. They are super easy to install and uninstall. I used to dread having to put on chains, now it is no big deal and I will not hesitate to do it again. My vehicle is a 2018 Toyota Highlander.

Still happy with my purchase

by:

Product is quality made with good instructions and nice and right sized rigid storage case. Suggest one “dry run install” in garage or driveway a couple of times so the first time your putting them on IS NOT on the side of the road in a snow storm. Overall pleased with the Snow Tire Chains and delighted, as usual, with etrailer’s Customer Service. I would buy these Tire Chains again.

by:

Lori B was very helpful. Our order delivery got caught in the ice storms and came later than we had expected. She continued to follow the transaction and notified us when it was received. She was special and we want to thank her and your company for the assistance. We will practice with the chains when we return home in January.

Volkswagen

I bought these chains after a recent trip to the mountains and a bad experience with tire cables. Unlike the cables, these chains fit the tires on my 2018 VW Atlas (245/60R18) perfectly, without interference with the front strut. I've only dry mounted these, and tested them very briefly on dry roads, but if they continue to perform as I expect they will, they will be well worth the slight premium over the previous cables I had been carrying -- better fit, much better traction, and quieter to run. BTW, Mariah at etrailer was exceptional to work with when I called explaining what I was looking for -- highly recommend.

by:

These work GREAT. Easy to put on and great traction. Would definitely buy again

by:

This is the second pair of these Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains that I have purchased. Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains are simply the easiest chains I have ever put on. Growing up in the 60's, where every winter chains where needed, it was doable but nothing like the ease in which Konig chains are installed. Tx

2017 Honda Ridgeline

I've used this brand of tire chains for several years. They are the best ever!

Truman

2/23/2020

We didnt have enough snow to need them this year but in previous years, they have been the easiest install Ive ever encountered. I put them on, drove one mile to a clear main road - took them off, drove to town, returned to my turn-off and re-installed them for the mile drive back to my house. I would NEVER do that with any other chains!

by:

Have had these chains for a year and used them on several occasions at our mountain cabin which has one mile of steep gravel road. These chains have worked well. While I can’t bring myself to say any tire chains are a pleasure to use, these have certainly worked well for me, and I do find them to be the easiest chains to put on and pull off that I’ve used - and in uncomfortable cold conditions I truly have appreciated their functionality. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Hi, My recent purchase of Konig XG 12 Pro snow chains is for a my new VW Atlas I bought in March. I have purchased from etrailer several times in the past and have always had excellent results. I also much appreciate the go to video reviews and tutorials. In this instance they helped with my decision greatly. Customer service has always been top notch! I am looking forward to trying out my new chains.

2019 Honda Odyssey

Excellent product and easy to use. Put these on my 2018 Honda Odyssey and fit perfectly. Drove through the snowy mountain roads for a trip to Big Bear Feb 2019 with no problems. Felt like excellent traction. I would recommend practicing putting them on at home in dry conditions so it is easier and faster when you have to put them on during cold snowy conditions.

Konig/Thule tire chains are the best - easy on/easy off and great traction for our 2015 Lexus RX350. Much better than cables.

Haven't had to put these chains on in the snow yet....but I put them on in the garage today just to test out how easy they are to install. Less than 2 minutes to put one on a tire. Looking forward to trying them on the way up to the mountain now.

  • How to Know if Konig Tire Chains Can Be Installed on 2015 Audi Q5 Front Tires
Usually when an owner's manual states not to use tire chains on the front tires it's because there just simply isn't enough clearance behind the tire to avoid damaging things like brake lines or wiring components. I wasn't able to find anything specific about which tires to install the Konig Tire Chains # TH01594250 on for your 2015 Audi Q5 but the manual did state to reach out to your local Audi dealer for specifics on using tire chains so I recommend doing that to avoid damaging anything...
