Today on our 2012 Mazda 3 we're doing a test test of the Rhino Rack Roof Rack Kit. This is consisting of 3 part numbers. The first is our Vortex Aero cross bars, part number RRVA118B-2. Our 2,500 series Legs for our Vortex Aero cross bars using RRRLKVA and our fit kit for our Mazda 3, part number DK289. Now we already have our front bar on, we've taken out our spacers here at the top and installed these bolts. This is where we're going to attach our cross bars. These are simple to remove, we just use a flat blade screwdriver, pushed it back, it popped right out, and then tighten those down. We do have that front cross bar installed, we've got part of our back bar installed as well. We're going to show you how to put the last kit together and then how to install it onto our vehicle. Everything that you see here is included with our kit.
The only thing you'll need to provide yourself is a flat tape measure of some sort. We've gone ahead and removed the bolt and nut that comes with this leg kit. We've also removed this pad that usually comes with it. We're going to use the additional one that comes with our fit kit. We're going to start by taking our leg here. We're going to grab this piece from our fit kit.
We're going to make sure that this tab goes back behind our leg kit. We'll take this nut, place it so that the portion that sticks out is facing back and then we're take our bolt that has a flat and lock washer on there. We're going to start to tighten it down. We can use our included torque tool to do that. When you've got that tightened down, set it off to the side. I'm going to take the rubber bottom here and the replacement pad for the bottom and I'm just going to squeeze those together until it's completely sealed and just pop that right onto the bottom. Now, I'll take our foot pack and it just slides right onto our cross bar.
We'll take our measurement here. It's going to be 16.3cm. That's going to give us the right amount of spread between each the leg kits. Just tighten down this bolt here and that holds it into place. I like to always double check that measurement. Now that that's secured, I'll take my cross bar end cap, slide it into place and then lock it with the key.
We can take our cross bar and we'll load it u onto our vehicle. We're going to take our bar and just set it on top making sure that the rubber seal along the bottom doesn't get tucked up underneath. Perfect. Now we can take the tool that comes with our fit kit and we'll start to tighten down this bolt here by tightening down the black portion at the top. Now what's really great about these cross bars is that we have the weather strip in the top. This is going to provide cushion for any clamp on accessories that you have. You can also take the end cap off, remove some of that weather strip, cut it up, and actually insert channel mounted accessories in there and re-insert the weather strip in between the channel mounts to help reduce that wind noise and drag. When we put on our cross bar end caps and lock those down, it's going to provide some extra security so you don't have to worry about theft and tampering of those accessories. inaudible 00:04:40 also a nice Vortex Aero shape so they're going to be aerodynamic, helps reduce wind noise and drag. We're just going to tighten these down as evenly as we can until it's completely secure. We've got a powder coated finish on our cross bar so it will resist rust and corrosion. There are also inserts that go in underneath here that you can use as measurements. You can cut those up and insert them into the bottom channel that we measured out so you don't have to worry about wind noise or drag from underneath there as well. What's really great about this seal here is that it's going to flare out, it's going to get a nice, finished look. It's also going to help to keep water and weather from getting up underneath there and causing any kind of build-up of water. We're just going to keep tightening these down, going back and forth. These cross bars have a 165 pound weight capacity but you do want to check your vehicle's owners manual. Keep in mind that whichever weight capacity is lower, you want to go by that instead. We want to make sure that we tighten this own as much as possible so we have a secure fit, not going to have to worry about our bars being too loose. Once both sides are completely tightened down, you can take our leg end caps and place those on. We have a lock to lock those in place, that's going to help to prevent theft and tampering of the roof rack itself. That's going to be our completed look at the Rhino Rack roof rack kit and how it fits on our 2012 Mazda 3.

These heavy-duty, aluminum crossbars work with Rhino-Rack legs to create a sturdy roof rack. The square bars include built-in C-channels for mounting Rhino-Rack heavy-duty, contractor-grade accessories. It works, yet for the price I expected more precision manufacturing than what I got. Several screw threads had rough spots and there is no way to tighten the nut on the underside of the metal bracket on one leg. It would have been nice for the instructions to mention the wrench for that nut is a 10 mm. And whatever made the designers think the regular user would have the type of torque wrench they require?
Here are some pics of the Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack Crossbars - Silver - 50" Long - Qty 2 installed on my 2011 Honda CR-V.
That I recently purchased.
Pretty nice rack system. Held up to my 90lb canoe no problem. However a piece did fly off on the highway and the "locking" bar end cap can pull off super easy.
The directions were ok. There is some stuff you have to kind of figure out for yourself, mainly the roof trim. I plan to leave the rack on so I drilled theough the trim
The rack fit well and was easy to install. Seems to be made well. The problem is the amount of road noise. I never even put the basket on. It was so loud, it roared. I repositioned it several times but the noise was way too much and I finally just removed it. I spent a lot of money for the rack and the basket and now they are in storage. I wish it would have worked out better because I thought it looked really good.
Easy to put together and it it has a quality feel
Ordered a Rhino Rack for my 2014 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali. Rack arrived in very good shape and all items were there. Installing at this time and see no problems ahead.
This rack works perfectly on my Nissan Versa for carrying my two Perception Sound 9'6" kayaks. The Rhino-Racks look good to me. The kayaks can rest directly on the rubber pads on the rails, unlike the Yakama racks I had in the past that had bare pipe rails. Also, I expect I can buy parts to adapt this product to a different car without having to buy new towers. I am sorry there are not hooks or loops to attach bungees when carrying lumber. They are noisy in the wind, but less so when carrying the kayaks.
Overall , great fit and quality, I ran into noise issues under the vortex rails , however, I cut the measuring guide that is supplied .and cut them to fit into the bottom of the rails . No more noise !!
Can't wait to use it for rooftoping my kayak
Thanks to Etrailer, I am ready to do some serious summer exploring with my 2013 Mazda 3! Rhino Racks, Malone top box, and Kuat bike rack!
Thanks to etrailer, I am ready to do some serious summer exploring with my 2013 Mazda 3! Rhino Racks, Malone top box, and Kuat bike rack!
Good quality and locks are included. The plastic lock covers are flimsy but they will keep an honest person honest.
I installed using the fixed mount on our 2016 Mazda CX-5. Install, while a bit lengthy, was fairly straightforward when you follow the directions. Solid roof rack that is good for strapping items down, including kayaks/canoe.
Note of caution for 2016 Mazda CX-5 owners! If using fixed mount with a moonroof, the placement is directly over moonroof. It whistles too. Enough to want to keep the moonroof shut.
Again, if using fixed mount on 2016 Mazda CX-5, the space between bars is TOO WIDE for any standard cargo box. Literally nothing out there that will fit. I learned the hard way.
Thank you for the very speedy customer service! My roof rack is already here!
Fairly easy installation. Read the instructions thoroughly before hand and get familiar with the parts. Take care when installing mounting studs onto car itself so as not to strip or cross thread them. Once installed they look great.
Very nice produce give props to the designer well build nice costume fit to my car easy too install even make the vehicle looks good and thank you to Melissa A at etrailer.com really helpful and awesome ty ten stars.
It took me a little while to install because the size numbers for my vehicle were off. But that being said, fast deliver and all the CORRECT parts for my particular vehicle made it a reasonably easy installation. I would order from e-trailer again.
I got the roof rack mounted anyways. Better pics to come when it's all finished!
The rack worked great this summer! I'm not sure the hardware for mounting it to the roof is going to hold up though. The little wrench is slipping in two of the screws and two of the pieces that mount directly to the roof have bent. Can I buy individual hardware?
Great product everything fit perfectly. With the heavy duty bars almost all the hardware for anything you put on the rack is too short
We love our Rhino Racks! We got them to haul our kayaks around on our crossovers. These were our first racks we've ever installed to a vehicle so we struggled a little bit to figure them out, but once we did figure it out, it was super easy.
Mostly importantly, we initially ordered the wrong rack in error. etrailer was helpful and accommodating and made the return process super easy and helped us get the right product ordered. I would definitely recommend this company and these roof racks.
I received THREE different sets of instructions for the 2500, plus the PDF I was prompted to download...REALLY confusing. I have put together all kinds of furniture, including a 3' x 6' armoire (I am a 5' tall woman), installed paneling and flooring, including carpet in my van, installed bathroom tiles, built closet storage 'out of my head' and from plans, pulled and installed a car radiator/brake and clutch pedals assembly/starter assembly during the course of my 56 years on this earth...but I have never, never, never had such a difficult time making sense of 'too much information'...please go over the instructions and combine what needs to be combined and separate the info for the different vehicles!!!
I am pleased with the outcome as far as the overall sturdiness of the product and I look forward to making use of this system. Besides the assembly instruction difficulties, I am disappointed in the fact that I bought the lock sets for each crossbar, only to see that the insides of each of the legs is exposed... ??? Please consider that in future design 'tweaks'.
I called etrailer with some very technical questions on fitment to my 2012 Mazda3. I spoke with Janeth, who worked hard to find answers and ultimately referred me to RHINO RACK to find out the size of the wrench needed.
The Mazda has fixed mounting points and a little stubby wrench must be used to tighten it to the studs on the roof. I wanted to use a ball ended allen key at at angle to save time installing and removing the rack regularly. A 10 mm ball end allen works perfectly with final tightening with the OEM wrench. A ratchet with 10mm allen socket or a flex shaft might also work.
The roof rack mounted easily and rigidly after glancing through the instructions. I got 3" longer crossbars than specced so the mounting charts weren't useful. I mounted the towers with the crossbars loose and tightened them afterward.
Thank you Janeth! You were really helpful.
I was in a roof rack jam. There was a national shortage of the rack I needed for my car and our summer vacation was a week away. I went to etrailer.com when I couldnt find the roof rack anywhere else on the web. Another website actually suggested that they might have what I needed.
I spoke to Ashley E on the phone to make sure that I was picking the right parts. Ashley was very helpful and knowledgable. She helped me find the right roof rack and made sure that I received it in record time. I am a customer for life!!!
Excellent customer service, all current manufacturers for this type of equipment is not available for purchase because Yakima, Thule, even Rhino Rack did mention from customer service representatives from these 3 companies states you are better off purchasing from a distributor such as E-trailer. This company definitely had the transfer equipment from a Yakima support base to a Rhino Rack crossbar system. I needed the additional load weight and Jaime from E-Trailer was extremely patient and helpful…seriously awesome customer service…also my package came 2 days earlier in this truck driver shortage too. Job well done.
