Speaker 1: Today I'm in a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu. We're going to be test fitting the Yakima core bar roof rack system consisting of part numbers Y00422. These are the Yakima core bar crossbars, 60 inches long.We'll also be using part number Y00146. These are the baseline towers for the Yakima cross bars. Particular for naked roofs.Finally, part number Y06123. This is the base clip fit kit for the Chevrolet Malibu.The Yakima core bar roof rack system is great for carrying a wide variety of accessories on your roof while freeing up space inside your Malibu.
This will carry anything from bike racks to cargo baskets to cargo boxes.The Yakima core bars combine the strength of the round bars, but with aerodynamic shape of the jet stream bars. However, you cannot use T Track accessories with this only wrap around accessories.Moving our end cap here, you can see how easy it is to install in our vehicle, it simply clamps around the door frame of your car.With the clamp itself, it is padded to ensure that the doorframe of your vehicle doesn't get scratched up once this is being installed.Also, on the end cap here, there is a plastic knock out, which you can replace with the Yakima same key system that is sold separately. Not only can you secure it to your roof, but you can also make a key to lock with the accessories that you're hauling.Next, I'd like to give you a couple quick measurements. From the center of the roof to the bottom of the bars, it's going to be about 2-3/4 inches. From the center to the top is going to be about 3-3/4 inches.
Now it's plenty of space in between the roof rack and the roof itself to fit your accessories to tighten them down. However, if you do have a sun roof on your Malibu, I would not recommend using it while the roof rack and the accessories are installed.With both bars combined, it does have a carrying capacity of 220 pounds, which is a lot more than most roof rack systems. However, you do want to check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can withstand those weights.Now we're going to go over some of the features the core bar reflects. I'm just going to show you how it installs. We have our front bar already installed on our vehicle.
We have our rear bar partially assembled on our table.We'll start by taking our metal bracket here and sliding it onto the end. Then also installing our end cap here just to make sure this doesn't slip back off. We'll then take this plastic piece here and push it into the top of our tower. You'll hear a little bit of a snap when you do this. Like that.Then we'll flip our bar upside down.
We'll attach the screw in the center here to this portion of our metal bracket. We'll first take this gray piece, pull it all the way out. That way we can get to the screw underneath. Take our tightening tool, line it up with our bracket and we'll loosely install it for now until we get it measured out.Next, we'll get the angle where our pads going to sit down, too. That's going to be this knob just at this front here. We'll push that to the back. You'll find this in your instructions the way this is supposed to be set.Once that's done, you'll take the included tightening tool and tighten it down until you hear a couple audible clicks.Next, we'll take the pad from our clip kit. That just pushes into place. Then we'll actually measure the space in between our towers to make sure that is the proper measurement from the instructions. I think that looks about right. Then we can tighten it down.But before I do that I would like to point out how we got our first tower in place. We measured from the center of the bar out to that point after taking the measurement that we have and cutting that in half as well. Tighten it down. We'll come back to the bolts and finish tightening that down. That's going to secure our tower to the bar. Now we can set this on the roof of our vehicle.An actual measure from center to center of our bars to get a cross bar spread on both sides as well.We'll loosen up the screw off to the side here. We're just going to lift this portion up so we can place our bracket in there. We'll open up our gray door here at the end, then take our mounting plate here. Push it through. Then we'll open up our door and to put this down into place we'll simply just tighten that bolt and then we'll go to the top of our door frame. Like so. Now we'll repeat that for the driver's side.We'll tighten down our center bolt here on both sides until you hear those audible clicks again. We'll close this up, close up the gray latch there. Repeat this on the driver's side.Take our cap and put it in place. Now we're ready to load up our gear and hit the road.There you have it for the Yakima core bar roof rack system on our 2018 Chevrolet Malibu.

In the past, I have had rails installed on the roof of my pickup trucks, but I find the BaseLine towers to be a better solution, since they don't permanently change the truck. Plus, they are much more solid than SkyLine system on the rails.

Follow the instructions, and you can't go wrong on the self installation
Your notice of schemes was a lot better than the yakima site provided. They did not suggest the scheme you did.
But when the products arrived, the instructions were by yakima. Generally worked as instructed except the tower to tower transverse mounting dimensions needed to be tweaked for a perfect fit.
Really easy to install & work as specified. So happy with the customer support/service at etrailer.

Did not get to mount anything to it but seems really sturdy. One thing I can say is mark out your mounting points with provided stickers then put up and make adjustments to the roof rack.
We purchased the Yakima Skyline Towers roof rack with the Jet Stream crossbars. Took about 2 hours to install on the naked roof of our Flex. I drilled through the roof strip for the mounting bolts and they fit tighter than the factory rails. Very happy with our choice.

Was skeptical at first because I needed the posts as well for my 2011 Honda Element. The Honda crossbars were not adequately weight rated and is why I opted for Yakima. Couldn't be happier with my choice as this assembly has served me well throughout the year.

Solid build quality and easy installation on my '21 Mazda CX-5.
The installation was super easy, and despite a long time stuck in shipping the delivery itself was extremely fast, and the package arrived in spotless condition. The manuals were very easy to follow, and the end result is absolutely amazing. They provided a nice, flush finish and hold the racks down tight.
So far so good. Purchased these towers to use on a 2022 GMC Canyon with HD bars that I already had, primarily to carry my canoe. Yakima's fitting instructions worked perfectly and the whole system seems really solid.
Well packaged and on time
I have not bought car roof racks for decades--back when there were those very useful rain gutters. So I was shocked with the high prices. But what you get today is much more carefully engineered with a complicated construction. This Yakima version even comes with a manual 3.5 mm hex driver which turns out to be a torque wrench too. You use it 16 times, torquing to its limit, in installing the two cross rails on the four towers. Years ago you installed the towers where you wanted them on the rain gutters and adjusted the cross rails by sight. No more. You must go on line to Yakima. You must get the precisely engineered dimensions for your exact vehicle. You even adjust the towers for the roof slope and any toe-in of the roof line. Pay attention to the precise instructions. The result is very solid. I wish that I had more space between the cross rails. There is room for another 6 or 8 inches given where the door openings on my 2019 Toyota Highlander are spaced. But then the rear base clips would be different and that logistics would add yet more to the price. I am confident that I can secure a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood on the cross rails. And I will find my vehicle in the mall parking lot easier with those good looking rails. While I am happy with the end product, I wish the vendors had given more explanation of the fixed dimensions of today's installations. That would have helped make my on-line shopping less frustrating. Part of the problem is that Yakima and Thule do not provide cross rails for my LE Highlander's existing tower bases. And I could not get 60 inch cross rails on any of the versions that fit my LE's bases.
The roof rack has been awesome! It has been really handy to be able to attach our bike rack attachment, kayak bars or traveling cargo carrier. My only complaint is that the end caps fell off somewhere along one of our many adventures and looks a bit disheveled. Other than the appearance it has been very versatile and we love it!

The instructions were different for another set of bars. Was a pain to get right...all the measurements on Yakima were off...I figured it out on my own...should have got Thule or nicer bars ..end caps were not good either...flawed fit... otherwise will do just not happy with the product perse or instructions...delivery good...will see how they do.
I did a lot of research before purchasing my roof rack. I came across this website and liked the prices, and after much thought, decided to get the Yakima CoreBar crossbars. I received my roof rack within a couple days of ordering! It's extremely sturdy and doesn't make hardly any wind noise. I love it and it looks great on my car, couldn't be happier with my purchase!!
The 60" CoreBar Crossbars will be much more useful to us than the original 50" bars placed on our shell at the factory. The only issue I had was that there were no instructions with the bars. It took a little while for me to figure out how the old bars came off and how to put the new ones on but I'll consider that a learning experience.
