GasStop ACME vs POL Graphic

Notes:

  • These valves are only meant to be used on travel trailers and fifth wheels that have the ACME connection fitting. Please see the graphic above to double check what type of valve you need.
  • Adapter fittings (sold separately) may be required to connect your hoses to your propane system's regulator.

You're headed to the next campsite, and in the chaos of packing up, you forgot to turn off your propane system. While on the road, someone rear ends you, causing a propane line to come loose, and you now run the risk of a fire breaking out on your RV. It's a dreaded situation that no one wants to suffer through.

Unlike EFVs and other built-in limiters that just reduce the flow of gas, GasStop shut-off safety valves immediately and completely shut off your gas supply when they detect either a major leak in your dual-tank propane system or failure of your regulator. This protects both your family and your travel trailer or fifth wheel, ensuring that your camping trip remains safe, fun, and worry-free. And while these safety valves will shut off for major leaks such as a large break in a hose, they won't shut off for small leaks that result from your regulator's small housing failure or clogged chambers. This means that your furnace or heater won't go out in the middle of the night while camping in the frigid mountains over a small, less dangerous leak.

GasGear Rubber Hose has a 90-Degree Fitting

GasStop Rubber Hose

If your dual-tank propane setup is in a particularly small or cramped compartment, the 90-degree ACME connections on these rubber hoses make it quick and easy to hook up to your tanks. This helps prevent the hoses from bunching and puts less strain on them, which means they'll last longer. And you can put a cover over your propane tanks without the hoses snagging the fabric or stop it from fitting over the tanks altogether.

Using the Pressure Gauges to Test for Minor Leaks

GasStop Safety Valve Testing for Minor Leaks

The integrated pressure gauges provide a clear and easy way to tell what your propane tanks' gas pressure is while the gas is being used. If it's on "high", there's been an increase in gas pressure, most likely due to excessive heat, and you'll have to cool the tanks down. If it's on "gas", then you'll know you still have plenty of usable gas left. And if it's on "low", then it's time to switch out your tanks. The gauges are also rotatable, so they can be used from any angle, though it is recommended to keep them no lower than 45 degrees from the sky.

The gauges can also be used to test for minor leaks. Once the GasStop safety valves has been installed and the gas appliances have been turned off, push down on the gauges 4 to 6 times to see what the gas pressure is. If the needles are below the red bar on the gauges, then one or more of the following is the cause: the cylinder valves aren't open, the GasStop safety valves have shut off, you have run out of gas, you haven't pushed the gauges the appropriate number of times, or the temperature is around freezing.

If the needles are above the red bar, note the exact position before turning off the valves on your propane tanks. Wait 60 seconds for standard applications and 5 minutes for longer RV gas systems. If the needles are in the same position, you can continue to use your propane system. If the needles dropped during that time, there is a leak somewhere. You shouldn't use your propane system until that leak has been found and repaired.

Installing the Safety Valves

GasStop Safety Valve Installation

These GasStop safety valves are extremely simple to install. Once your tank-propane system and all of your gas appliances have been shut off, tighten the GasStop safety valves onto your propane tanks. The re-attached your regulator and install the hoses before checking for any leaks in your propane system. To allow the gas to flow, push down on the gauge faces 4-6 times.

Adding safety valves to both tanks means you'll still be protected from gas leaks even if one tank empties in the middle of the night and the regulator kicks over to the other tank. You won't have to manually move the valves over to the other tank in the morning as you would if you had just 1 valve.

Video Transcript for Review of GasStop Propane Fittings - Emergency Shut-Off Valves with 18" Hoses - GS99FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this GasStop emergency propane shutoff gauge and hose set. This set is gonna give you two of these gauges and two of these 18 inch long hoses so that you can have one set up on each of your propane tanks. You won't have to worry about switching from your empty tank to your full tank when it comes time to do that. Just gonna help streamline that process. And these are gonna help protect your family against major propane leaks and regulator failure.

These will turn off the gas supply immediately if a leak or failure is detected. And unlike the safety components that are built into your propane tanks and into your hoses that cut off the majority of the propane, but still allow a little bit of propane to flow through, this is going to cut off 100% of that flow, so you won't have to worry about propane feeding flames if there we're a fire or something along those lines. So it is gonna give you a good peace of mind knowing that that is completely shut off. These do have the Type 1 ACME fitting, so they are gonna be compatible with your travel trailers and 5th wheels. There is a different design for your Class A and Class C motor homes that uses a POL connection, so you wanna make sure you're getting the right one for your setup.

This is for your travel trailers and 5th wheels only. This does have a nice brass and reinforced polycarbonate construction, so it is going to be corrosion resistant and will hold up well for you for a long time to come. And this does have the rotating pressure gauge here on the top, that will give you a very quick view of what's going on in your tanks, so you can see whether you have high pressure, sufficient gas, or when you're nearing empty. This will also allow you to test for minor leaks. To reset it if you we're to experience a leak or to test, you can just push down four to six times.

That will reset it and you can check to see where that dial is. If it's moving down, you know you have a leak, or if you do experience a major leak, then that will allow you to reset it so that propane can flow through again after it's been shut down. So when I say a major leak, that is really anything that's gonna be above your normal usage, so you don't have to worry about this turning off your propane if you we're to turn on another appliance or something like that. This is gonna be a setup so that more than your normal amount of usage will trigger this to shut down that propane. So will do a good job for you not interrupting your usage until there is something that could be dangerous situation.

Then it turns it off 100%. Very simple to get installed. We do have those ACME fittings that will just tighten onto your existing propane tank's gas cylinders and then we'll very easily attach it to our hoses here, like so. Now as you can see, this is going to add a little bit of distance for you for your setup, rather than just having your hose connected to your tank. So it's gonna be just a little over 3 inches, I'll call it 3 1/8 of an inch additional there. And that's where our 90-degree bend in our hose is gonna become more important for us. And especially if we're trying to fit into small or cramped spaces, that will reduce the amount of space you need rather than having your standard hose that would need a nice big loop. This is gonna keep that nice and tight for you so you can still place your cover over your propane tanks without having to worry about the hose snagging them. This is an 18 inch long GasGear rubber pigtail hose. This is gonna have the ACME cylinder connection on the one end and then the 1/4 male inverted flare on the other end to hook up to your regulator. This does have 250 PSI maximum pressure rating and 200,000 BTU maximum flow capacity, so it is gonna do a really good job for you. All of these components are UL and CSA approved, so you can trust they are gonna do a good job, hold up well. And with that shutoff there, just that absolute peace of mind knowing that if there we're to be a major leak, it is gonna be shut down so you don't have to worry about it causing more problems. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
