Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt, two and a half inch hitch cap sensor. This is going to attach to the two and a half inch by two and a half inch trailer hitch receiver on your 2019 newer GMC Sierra and your 2021 newer Chevrolet Silverado trucks. This is not going to obstruct your trailer hitch or towing accessories, it's got two pieces there that will allow it to clamp down on the top and bottom so that it will work on the outside still allow you to easily put your phone out and that sort of thing inside there without having to worry about it whatsoever. This sensor is going to work in sync with your trucks electronics to prevent the inner tailgate on your GMC MultiPro or Chevrolet Multi Flex tailgate from folding down when you have a ball mount or other accessory installed in your hitch. Now, it's possible that it will still alert you if the cap is raised like this, and maybe you just forgot to close it.
So you will wanna make sure that you're always closing the cap when you don't have an accessory in there so that the sensor will allow your tailgate to fall down. This is very convenient way of just kinda giving you a second set of eyes to make sure that you're not gonna have anything that could damage your tailgate before you lower it in place. And because it is very easy to get installed with the included wiring harness, it's just gonna plug right into your tail light wiring. They do include instructions here. So because of that, it's going to be a very simple way of just kinda giving you an extra check to make sure that you're not gonna damage your tailgate.
This is a nice black plastic construction, So it's going to be a nice sleek design suited for all work conditions, whether you're just doing some recreational towing or if you're hauling for a job. As far as our dimensions go, this is right at four and seven eighths to just shy of five inches tall by about five and a quarter of an inch wide and about one and a half inches deep. This will include both the sensor cap, the wiring harness, and then a few zip ties for you to help route your wiring up to where it's gonna plug in. That's another really nice thing about this installation is that these are all plugged options so you're not gonna have to worry about splicing into your vehicles wiring to get it connected, it's all just gonna be very easy to get plugged in, just like the instructions show they do have pictures to walk you through step by step. So again, very easy to get this installed.
And it will just provide that extra check to make sure that your tailgate isn't gonna drop down when you have a bomb out there that could damage it. So that's gonna complete our look for today. The hitch sensor functions great. The plastic cover, not so much,
When using a trailer hitch , the cover does not flex up enough and has snapped off breaking the plastic hinge. This happened going over a dip where the truck and trailer did a V while going across.
Since then the hitch cover has been ripped off by a car wash. Because of the broken clip. Both clips are broken and I must remove and store the cover while using a hitch.
Really like the way this unit protects my truck from my absent minded activation of the tailgate step when I shouldn’t. One thing I would like to see is a hitch stabilizer to reduce the looseness of my 2” hitches in the adapter to 2 1/2” hitch. Have tried some “standard” hitch tighteners but they all interfere with the cap sensor unit. Requested that Curt provide a solution with no response back.
Says it works on 2021 and newer. Not true, I put it on my 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 and would make tailgate lock out on me, I called Curt and they said it’s not designed to work with 2022 trucks.

The day after I bought my 22 GMC 3500 I ordered your product to save my tailgate. It works perfect and fits great. Finshed off the hitch receiver awesome. Easy install and imo the best money spent. Highly recommend if anyone is looking to save your tail gate from a unfortunate accident.
I don't know why GMC don't install this feature to all their trucks. I think it is a great ideal. I fill a lot better knowing that I are anyone else can drop the step down on my tail gate. Thanks,
My order was originally scheduled for delivery on Saturday and actually showed up today on Thursday so now I can get my trailer back together and hit the road this weekend

Unfortunately, we have had a problem with our cover on the curt hitch guard for the multi-use tailgate protection. Havent had the time to locate a replacement part# for the magnetic cover. One side of the magnetic cover hinge broke off and now is not reliable to leave on.
Etrailer delivered as described. I chose the Curt over others as I did not want to splice wires. Splices may develop problems in time and in this day and age of plug and play i thought it’s a better solution. My only concern is that running through a car wash might cause problems with the flip up hitch cover being torn off. Time will tell.
The Hitch cap does work as designed. My experience though is somewhat mixed. Easy plug and play but my cover never folded straight up, consequently when I went over a dip,the cap broke at a hinge..
I ended up buying a second one no parts available and tech insisted i was wrong, installed only the broken part and this cap does fold straight up out of the way. Would I recommend the product...hmmmm....yes... clean, sleek and it soes work
Easy to install. Could be made of sturdier stuff for the price. All plastic construction but works well. Does what it’s supposed to. Magnetic switch in the housing and magnet in the door that closes over the receiver tube.
Great design, cheap plastic. I put this cover on in August. The cheap plastic cover broke in October rendering it useless. If they can fix the cheap quality of the product, my one star review would be 5, no doubt.
The cover piece is plastic and the small tabs that the cover pivots on broke so the cover is no longer functional.
Mine is erratic in its operation. Most of the time it does not prevent the upper tailgate from opening when the sensor cover is in the open position (ie. a hitch assembly is installed in the vehicle receiver). That is exactly the operation that this device is supposed to prevent. It also seems to create some confusion with my truck as after it incorrectly allowing the upper tailgate to open, at times it will not ally my full tailgate to open even though the tail lights blink etc in response to me pushing the full tailgate button on the tailgate. I think this device creates a false sense of security the way it operate in my case. Perhaps the magnetic switch in the cover is malfunctioning.
I installed this a year ago, and it has worked flawlessly. My truck is always outside and the winter in Nebraska was very cold this year, but the plastic has held up. I have towed with it around 10 times in the last year, so the cover does not get operated every day, but it is still like new. I doubt it would survive something hitting it, but with normal operation, it is as sturdy as it needs to be. Overall, the installation was easy, and it does what it is supposed to do. I can't ask for more than that.
Concept is good. Device works well initially. Second trip one side of the hinge (plastic) that holds the cap broke while driving down the highway. The cover is open when a hitch is installed. Not a robust design. If the cap fails completely, the inner tailgate will not open.

Product was an easy install about 30 minutes and works like a champ. Only issue I have is unplugging the outer latch . Theres no reason for that.
Works as advertised. Fairly simple to install.Instructions fairly easy to follow. Tools needed are outlined in the instructions.

A well-designed product that fixes the multi-tailgate issue with the trailer hitches installed so that you don't smash in your tailgate. This was the best system in my opinion as you don't have to cut or splice any wires. Takes a little bit of effort to install but well worth it.
Well, I just bought a new to me 2020 GMC sierra SLT and that’s when I found out about the problem of damaging the tailgate with the trailer hitches. Well I shopped around and I looked at the other ones and they all worked based off whether or not you had the pin in and that is not enough security, this one works off of the cap or cover being open. In my opinion you could still damage your tailgate on the other ones because you may have forgot to put the pin in but on this one if that caps open the top tailgate will not drop.So in theory, this is the best tailgate protection. I installed it today and It worked perfectly immediately . I think I installed it in 15 minutes . Now let’s see what I think about it in a year.

the Hitch sensor does work as designed. It does provide an effective interlock. Now for the flip side. This is my 3rd sensor cover. the first 2 broke off when my truck was going down an incline and the V created when the truck straighten out and the trailer was coming off the incline snapped the cover off I called and off coures the response is that can not happen. I do understand IF some leaves the cover open through a car wash, consider it gone.
