Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the floor covering, some interior paneling, and the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11142385

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness with the four way flat trailer connector. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2010 to 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer hatchback. It fits the 2012 to 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Sedan, excluding the Evolution and the 2011 to 2012 Mitsubishi RVR with the LED taillights, and the 2011 and newer Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with the LED taillights. Now, because this fits so many different vehicles, I do recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, putting your year and model vehicle and it'll show if this'll work for your application. Now, this harness will provide this four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle, power your trailer's signal lights.

It is compatible with five pole, six pole, and seven pole adapters that we do sell separately on our website. This does connect very quickly and easily. All you have to do is locate your connection points, which are behind the taillights, plug in these connectors, one on each side, ground your white wire, and then run this power wire to your vehicle's battery. Now, it does include this black box here, which is your taillight converter, and this is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. It is a power module, that's why you'll connect it directly to your vehicle's battery, and that's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. They do give you protective connection terminals to help resist corrosion.

It does come with this nice stuffs cap for your four way connector right here. Basically, what you can do with that is attach it to the four way and you can leave it attached after you attach it if you want, but when you're not plugged into your trailer, what you'll do is just go ahead and put that over the terminals and that'll protect them from any damage or from the elements. Now it does come with everything laid out here on the table, and I'm going to show you in a minute how these all connect. Maximum amperage on this harness on the stop and turn light circuits is three amps per circuit. For the taillights, it's six amps per circuit. But basically you'll have a nice set of instructions here that will describe how to make all your connections.

But again, what you'll do is go to the rear of your vehicle, locate your connection points behind the taillights, and you'll start on the driver's side and take this connector here that has the red and yellow wire in it. That's for the driver's side, unplug the harness plug that's in there, and then you go to the passenger side and take this other connector with the green wire. This green wire is for the passenger side, it has a length of wire so you run it all the way over to the passenger side.Plug this into the harness behind the taillight. Then what you'll do is run this wire with the four way out towards the rear where you're going to connect to your trailer, and then you'll have two remaining wires, a white wire, you can see with the eyelet on it, that you can connect to a good clean ground. There's not one nearby, they do give you a grounding screw that you can make your own ground.

And then you have your power wire right here. This will be to run to your vehicle's battery. They do give you this length of wire to do that. So what you'll do is connect the length of wire to butt connector and run this wire all the way to the front, to where you get to the battery. But you don't want to run this directly to the battery, you want to run it through this inline fuse holder. So you'll take the end of the wire connected to that butt connector, and then on the other side, you'll have this eyelet. That is what'll connect to the battery. Once that's all connected, take your included 15 amp fuse, go ahead and insert it in to the fuse holder. Oops, here we go. And put your cap on and your system will be ready to go. You can see they give you some extra cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring, and they give you some terminal grease to put on all your connections. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness with the four-way flat trailer connector..

Took about 2 hours (Didn’t have a lift). Everything was complete, hardest part was running the power wire to the battery. The directions were perfect and explained each step in the installation process. Etrailer is a great company to buy from.
