Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 40185 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness. This product is going to fit a 2005-2008 Ford F150. It's designed to replace the 4-pole trailer connector that was or is on your truck. Each vehicle's specific connector is going to be pre-wired. It's going to use the original OEM connectors for a watertight protection, a guaranteed fit, and a factory look. When installing this, you don't have to worry about cutting or splicing or taping any of your wires. The unit is going to be constructed of 16-gauge wiring.

It's got tape going all around the the wiring, so it's going to stay grouped together. The plugs on the harness right here are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. You do get the 4-pole connector on this end. It's got an easy-grip design. It's going to come with the dust cap to protect the connections points when the plug is not being used. On the packaging, it's going to have detailed, easy to follow instructions.

This can be used with 5-pole, 6-pole, or 7-pole adapters. Again, really simple installation. Unplug and remove the currently or previously installed 4-way flap. Then plug in these ports to the connection points. Then you got your new 4-way connector. It's going to come with a couple of zip ties.

That way you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring. It's going to come with your terminal grease. That gets applied to the electrical connections on the vehicle side and the 4-pole connector side to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness.

  • Parts Needed To Add a 7-Way Connector On a 2008 Ford F-150
If your 2008 Ford F-150 came with the factory tow package you should have a connector that will connect directly to a Pollak Replacement 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector Socket # PK11893. If your F-150 did not come with a factory tow package the Plug-N-Tow (R) Vehicle Wiring Harness # 40185 will give you a 4-way flat connector and then you will need a kit like our Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 to get a 7-way. In the event you are also needing a brake...

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch C13352 Fit a 2005 Ford F-150 with Vibration Dampener
The Curt trailer hitch # C13352 will fit all models of the 2005 Ford F-150 with or without the vibration dampener. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. If you plan on doing some towing, I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit, # EBMK4, which comes with a ball mount, interchangeable ball set, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag. For trailer wiring use # 18252 if the truck does not have a factory tow package. Use # 40185 if you need to replace a...

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2005 Ford F-150 Long Bed
The Draw-Tite Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 41549, that you have referenced will fit your 2005 Ford F-150 long bed. This hitch has a gross towing weight capacity of 6,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 600 lbs. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Draw-Tite hitch. The # 51020 hitch is listed as a Pro Series hitch that fits 1997 to 2004 Ford F-150, so it is not designed for your 2005 vehicle. If you will be towing with this hitch I would also recommend the...

  • Replacing Factory 4-Way on 2006 Ford F-150 with 4-Way/7-Way Connector
Yes! The Hopkins Plug-N-Tow # 40185 is a plug and play solution for replacing the factory 4-Way on your 2006 Ford F-150. To add a 7-Way/4-Way connector you would then need the Hopkins # 37185. This connects directly to the 4-Way and then has additional wires that you can connect to wiring run to the rear of your pickup for it to be fully functional. You can mount the Hopkins connector with part # C57202 to avoid drilling into your trailer hitch. If you want to permanently install this...

For your 2004 Ford F-150 new body, I would recommend using the Tow Ready Custom Fit Wiring Harness, # 118247. This wiring harness will plug into a connector that is located along the drivers side frame rail behind the back bumper and does not require any splicing. I have attached the installation instructions that show where the vehicle side connector is located and where to connect the relay. I have also added a photo showing the location of the vehicle side connector For a smooth factory...

  • Trailer Turn Signals and Brake Lights Not Working on a Boat Trailer
If you are getting the correct signals from the truck side trailer connectors, then the problem is on the trailer. There could be a number of issues causing the problem. The easiest to check would be the trailer side connector. With the trailer connected, test the wires right behind the trailer side connector using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. If no signals are coming through, then you know the connector is bad and it will need to be replaced. While you are at the trailer side connector,...

  • Trailer Running Lights Do Not Work When Connected to a Honda CR-V
So it sounds like you are using an adapter like # 37185 or something similar. You need to make sure the adapter is grounded to the vehicle frame otherwise it will not work properly. It could also be a ground issue on the trailer. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of...

  • Comparing Class III and Class IV Trailer Hitches for a 2008 Ford F-150
There are going to be several differences between a Class III trailer hitch and a Class IV trailer hitch like Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 41933. One difference is how each attaches to the truck. The Class IV hitch requires more attachment points. I have included a link to the installation details for this hitch below that better illustrates where and how the hitch attaches to the truck. Even though there may be more attachment points, we still have the install difficulty rated at a 3 out...

  • Troubleshooting Malfunctioning Turn Signals on Utility Trailer Towed by 2006 Chevy Silverado
The first thing you will need to do is to test the 4-pole connector on the truck with a circuit tester like # PTW2993. This will tell you if the wiring problem exists on the truck or on the vehicle itself. The pins on the connector fed by the yellow and green wires should light up your tester when the right turn, left turn and brake lights are activated. If you do not get any signal on the right or left turn pins, you most likely have a blown fuse. Check the fuse box under the hood. If...

  • Not All Trailer Lights Work on Pontoon Boat Trailer Towed by a 2005 Nissan Armada
The first thing I recommend is to check the vehicle side trailer connector using a circuit tester like # PTW2979 if you need one. Have someone sit in the vehicle and run through the lighting functions while you test the trailer connector with the circuit tester. If not all the functions work, you may need some relays. On a 2005 Nissan Armada there are tow package wiring relays that allow the wiring to function. It very well could be that some of the relays are missing or bad on your Armada....

First, check to see if the running light circuit on the 7-Way on your 2011 Ford F-150 has power using a circuit tester such as # PTW2992. If it does not then there is likely a fuse blown or blown or missing relay. Use the owners manual to locate any fuses/relays related to the tow package wiring. If there is power on the truck side connector then plug in the adapter and make sure there is power on the outside of it. If there is not then the issue is with the adapter. If there is power...

  • Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way in a 2008 Ford F-150
You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 40185. Now if your trailer does not have brakes all you would need is the part # 37185 as an adapter to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. If you do have trailer brakes you would need the # 3035-p and the # 37185 and a brake controller. The brake output circuit is ran to the truck frame rail where you can easily complete it to the blue wire of the 37185. Check out the FAQ article I attached on this...

There was a were changes for the 2005 model year and the wiring package was changed on the Ford Trucks. To wire your vehicle for a 7-way connector you will need a 4-way connector first.
