When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Adjustable Channel Design

The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4857120

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Titan Adjustable Channel Down Hydraulic Disc Brake Actuator with the reverse lockout and a 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push the trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with surge brake system, the actuators and triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. So when this happens, the actuator or the inside portion of the actuator will actually contract and applies force to the master cylinder in the back here and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Now, this is a unique roller design and just zoom in and you can see right here, this roller helps reduce resistance during the telescoping to help create a nice straight line movement. And it has a grease circ fitting on the end here which allows you to attach a grease gun, makes it easy for ADC lubrication. Now, this is a nice sturdy, durable steel construction resist spending in any jackknife situations. Now, this one does include the electric reverse lockout solenoid back here, that's attached to the master cylinder. Now that selects you back up without actuating your trailer brakes. The electric reverse lockout was automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse and the solenoid wires into your trailer connector which connects to your tow vehicle so that it can detect when you're in reverse.

So when you go into reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer brakes and allows you to back up your vehicle. But to use this lockout feature, you must have either a five-way flat six way round or a seven way trailer connector on your vehicle.Do you notice also it has this nice built-in shield that will protect that solenoid valve from the elements and from any damage to it. Now up front here, it has this offset adjustable channel, has five different mounting positions for the coupler. Now the coupler is not included, we do sell that separately and this channel does have a built-in drop which is great for tall trailers. And that's because of the adjustable channel you can see as position so that the mounted coupler could sit below the actuator tube allowing for a greater drop than a standard center minded channel.

So as a result, you can line up your tall trailer with a tow vehicles hitch for a nice level setup. Now, the height on the channel itself very bottom to very top is right at 12 inches. The inside with that the coupler would go into and the channel is right at three inches. And the distance between the mounting holes is a standard two inch center to center measurement. That does come with this breakaway kit which is a chain with a hook on it and this is included and it is required by law to safety feature. Basically this hook right here is what will attach to your tow vehicle.

So you attach this to your tow vehicle and then your chain would be pulled like that and what happens is in a situation where the trailer would become detached from your tow vehicle, it will pull on this chain which will activate the lever and that lever will activate the master cylinder to apply pressure to the brakes and stop it in a runaway situation. So it is required by law and it does come included with this actuator. Now this is a nice corrosion resistant zinc plated finish on it. It is a bolt on installation, you can see at the very bottom here with all the holes, that's where you bolt it onto your trailer. It is designed to fit on a straight three inch wide trailer tongue application. This is for trailers with disc brakes, gross towing weight capacity is 12,500 pounds, maximum tongue weight capacity is 1,250 pounds, but that should do it on the review of this Titan Adjustable Channel Down hydraulic Disc Brake Actuator with the reverse lockout and a 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity.
