You have it absolutely right. The 6-1/2 foot width of the Thule HideAway Awning # TH490018 means where it will attach; the 8-1/2 foot length is how long it extends out away from the vehicle. I have added a link to the installation instructions of this awning for you to check out as well.

Awning with Rain Covers to Fit Side of 2000 Ford F-250
Since your 2000 Ford F-250 does not have a roof rack your best solution for an awning would be one that attaches directly to the side of the van with the Thule Hideaway part # TH490008. This measures 8-1/2' x 6-1/2' and would be a great size for your van. For rain blockers you'd need the part # TH306454 for the front panel (you'd need two of these), and then for the sides you'd need the # TH306515.

Option For a Mosquito Net For a Thule HideAway Awning
There is no a great option for a mosquito net for your Thule HideAway Awning # TH490018. Not only is the Mosquito Net Walls # TH8002X1001 not the correct option for your HideAway awning, it also is not large enough. Really the only option that we have, would be to use the Rain Blocker G2 Front Panel # TH306454 (x2) and the Rain Blocker G2 Side Panel # TH306515 (x2) to enclose the HideAway awning.

Is There a Thule QuickFit Tent for the 8.5' Long Thule HideAway Awning
I do have an option for you but there isn't a compatible Thule QuickFit Tent for the Thule HideAway Awning - Roof Rack Mount part # TH490008 as it's too small. That said, they do offer Rain Blocker G2 Panels which will work similarly to the above, part # TH306515 for the sides and part # TH306454 for the front. These are the 6' tall panels so they will work great on a low roof height.

How Do The Rain Blocker G2 Panels Work On a Thule HideAway Roll Out Awning
Yes, the Rain Blocker G2 Side Panels like part # TH307292 are contoured to the slope of the awning at the top. The side panels will work on both the right hand or left hand side but there is not one for each. The side panels are the same inside and out which is what allows them to be installed on either side. In regards to how they attach; the top uses a channel, the sides use several hook and loop fasteners, and the bottom uses an anchor system. I have attached some photos to help clarify...
