SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Video Transcript for Review of SmartPlug RV Power Inlets - Replacement Female Plug Assembly - SM36FR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this SmartPlug 50-amp, replacement, female-connector plug assembly for your RV power cords. This part here will replace your 50-amp shore power plug on your RV cord to work with the SmartPlug 50-amp inlets. This 50-amp female connector plug will plug into your SmartPlug 50-amp male inlet, which we do sell separate on our website. This part will include everything shown here on the table. The SmartPlug, which includes the face itself.

Just pull the face out. Here's the face that you'll connect your cord to, and then this is the body of it. This whole SmartPlug will be included. Comes with the two rubber cord gaskets. The smaller one is for the 125 volts.

The larger one is for the 250-volt cord. And then the install tools, which are used to install your cord through the gasket and into your plug here. Does come with the hardware with the hex tool and a nice set of instructions that'll describe how this gets put together. This is a nice sleeve design, so it helps keep the weight and the tension off of the electrical inlet pins. The body of the plug itself will bear the weight to keep the points of your electrical contact secure.

What's nice is if you look at the plug, it is a straight-in connection. Makes plugging in very easy, even if it's dark out. Does use nice triple-weatherproof seals to prevent corrosion and overheating. You can see if I pull the face off, that comes with a seal right there. It does use the multi-point locking system to ensure a solid connection.

You can see right here on the sides, if you push those, if I show it to you that way, you can see how it'll release. When you push them in, it'll release the plug. And then when you push it in, it'll lock them into place and hold it tight. Basically, all you have to do is push the plug straight into the inlet until the side levers click into place. On the inlet, there's an inlet locking cap that you fold down. Once this is installed onto there, that locking cap will lock onto this gasket and even help secure the plug from becoming disconnected. The connector does wire to your existing power cord. The construction on this is the external metals are all a marine-grade 316 stainless steel. All the plastics are UV and heat-resistant. This part is made in the USA. Few specs on this again; it is a 50-amp plug. It's gonna be set up for either a 125-volt cord or a 250-volt cord. But that should do it for the review on the SmartPlug 50-amp, replacement, female-connector plug assembly for your RV power cords..

Did the job with making my own one piece 30 to 50 amp adapter for my airstream. Took a 10/2 with ground extension cord 50’ long and cut off the female end and wired the smart plug.connector. Had to put a jumper between L1&L2 used a piece of black #10 Romex. I’m satisfied!

I was replacing an existing Smartplug on two cables and was a bit concerned this might not be the same. It was the exact original and installation went great on the second one. One word of advice (why the first was a challenge) - since I was replacing Smartplugs on older cables, the new/shiny cable cover was now rougher to the touch. The new plug sleeve will NOT slide easily over a non-smooth surface. On my second cable, I used a very fine sand paper to smooth the rough spots in the cable, and the install took half the time as the first cable (where I had not done this).

Geat way to upgrade RV plug.

I love this plug. After owning it for a year, it has held up well. Easy to plug it in and unplug it. Installation was a bit challenging working with the heavy 4-wire 50 amp shore power cord. The only improvement I can think of is I wish the company had a 90° version. With the heavy wire coming out of the plug, it sticks out quite a bit from the side of the trailer. I am afraid that it could get bumped into by people next to me.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this transition from those stupid plastic screw-on plugs. This is relatively easy to install and a snap to use (literally). A great product.
