    • More consistent stopping, even at highway speeds
    • Dramatically shorter stopping distance
  • Maintenance costs are lower than for drum brakes
    • Fewer moving parts to maintain, repair and replace
  • E-coat finish provides corrosion resistance for freshwater and limited saltwater use

    • Hubs use industry-standard bearings and seals (sold separately) - races included
    • Wheel studs included - lug nuts sold separately
    • Rotors are vented to prevent heat-related damage by effectively dissipating heat
  • Heavy-duty cast iron calipers are self-adjusting for smooth, equal braking
    • Cast iron construction does not flex like aluminum
    • Low-drag design retracts piston farther than other calipers for a cooler-running brake
    • Silver cadmium piston is 2-1/2" in diameter - 30 percent larger than other brands
      • More braking torque than the competition
    • High-performance, ceramic brake pads
  • Ductile iron mounting brackets provide strength and durability
    • Side-support design ensures that load is placed on bracket, not bolts
    • Extra embossing for additional thread contact ensures tight, secure mounting for caliper guide bolts
    • 4-Bolt brake flange mounting configuration - weld-on flange sold separately
  • Kit includes 2 full brake assemblies
    • 2 Machine-finished, cast iron rotor-and-hub assemblies
    • 2 E-coated, heavy-duty cast iron calipers
    • 2 E-coated, heavy-duty ductile iron caliper-mounting brackets
    • 4 Stainless steel caliper-mounting bolts
  • Hydraulic brake actuator and lines (sold separately) are required for brakes to be activated
    • Requires psi rating of at least 1,500

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The included hubs and rotors are made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

I ordered 2 sets of this disc brake kit for my new 24' PJ B6 gooseneck trailer. Out of the box there were some issues. First only the calipers come e-coated, hub and rotor are raw finish. I did not want these parts getting all rusty so I had to paint them myself. Next issue was the calipers. Would it kill Kodiak to run these thru a deburr tumbler? I had to spend more time with a file cleaning up all the burrs and dings/dents both where the pads locate and the sliding caliper surfaces. The fittings were installed with Teflon sealing paste that was globed and smeared everywhere. Had a hunch this also contaminated inside of the caliper and I was right. Again I had to remove all the fittings, chase the threads with a tap and thoroughly blow out the inside with brake cleaner and compressed air before reassembling with a more appropriate thread sealer. On to the hubs which are robust and come pre-assembled with the rotor. Unfortunately they also come with bearing races already installed. These are cheap no name parts of unknown Chinese origin. They were also badly assembled, all four hubs showed signs of galling from the races being installed and slivers of metal contaminated inside of the hub. The seating shoulder of the race bore was not fully machined on my hubs either so I had to chuck them in in my lathe and finish machining the seats. They did clean up fine and I reassembled with quality Timken races that were properly greased to avoid the galling issue.

All of these issues I believe are due to poor manufacturing quality control. The design is good, the base product is good, but Kodiak really needs to step up their game on fit and finish. For the price paid I should not have had to do all the things I did just to make these usable.

As to function these work great! Helps stop the fully loaded 16K trailer with ease even in on mountain roads. I like that pads can be purchased at any auto parts store and calipers can be rebuilt with ease.

  • Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for Lippert 8k Torsion Axle
The Kodiak 13" XL-Lube Hub and Rotor - 8 on 6-1/2 - E-Coat Finish - 9/16" Bolts - 8,000 lbs # K2HR8D11E9 are the largest rotor hubs we carry. They are compatible with torsion axles and disc brake rated EOH systems which have a higher 1600 psi level than drum brake actuators. I recommend the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16. Our installers all really like how this system performs compared to the others and it is also the one we see the fewest...
