Parts Needed To Add Electric Trailer Brakes To Trailer With 2000lb Axle And 14 Wheels
Question:
Hello friends, I just bought an old trillium trailer with looking to upgrade to electric brakes. I have a 2K axle BTR spindle and bearings L44649. My wheel is R14. Given 14 wheel, It seems like a should be getting this hub: Trailer Idler Hub for 2K E-Z Lube Axles - 13 to 15 Wheels - 5 on 4-1/2 - Pre-Greased Item # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K But the brakes that seem to go with that are for a 3500lb axel : Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 10 - Right Hand - 3,500 lbs Item # 23-27 Is that fine to put the larger brakes on the smaller axle? Thank you very much!

I have another option for you, but the Trailer Idler Hub for 2K E-Z Lube Axles # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K you were looking at are not designed to be used with brakes.
Since your spindle uses inner and outer bearing # L44649 the only hub and drum assembly that will fit is the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K E-Z Lube Axles - 7" - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K which is only compatible with wheels up to 12" in diameter, and would use Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" # AKEBRK-2. With this option you would need to change your tires and wheels to a 12" wheel like the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" Galvanized Spoke Wheel # AM31202.
If you wanted to keep your 14" wheels you would need to replace your axle with one that has a different bearing combination. I recommend the Timbren Axle-less Suspension # ASR2KHDS01 which will bolt to the frame of your trailer and will not require you to worry about finding an axle that has the same dimensions of your current axle.
The # ASR2KHDS01 uses inner bearing # L68149 and outer bearing # L44649 and would allow you to use Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K which is compatible with wheels up to 15" in diameter.
For brakes you would want the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" # AKEBRK-35-SA and mounting hardware # BRKH10B. 3500lb brakes will work fine on your trailer even though it cannot carry 3500lbs.
To complete the electric brake conversion you will also need the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box # HS381-9000 which will give you the 7-way connector needed to power the trailer brakes, and a junction box to make all of your wiring connections. You will also need # 12-1-1 to run from the junction box to each brake assembly using heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-5 for a weather tight connection.
Lastly if you vehicle does not already have a trailer brake controller and 7-way connector you will need to add one. If you can provide the Year/Make/Model of your vehicle I would be happy to make a recommendation for you.
I included videos for the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
