How to Determine Replacement Hubs for Home Built Trailer

Question:

I have a home built trailer which I bought used. How do I tell which spindle I have? Do I have to take out a bearing to get the number or type printed on it? How do I tell if the axle is EZ-lube or not? Do these hubs have a grease fitting or must they be repacked by disassembling?

Unfortunately yes, you'll have to pull the hubs to get the bearing numbers.

The hub assemblies you referenced, part # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K, include a grease cap with a rubber plug that is removable. This allows you to access the zerk fitting on your trailer's spindle, if you have one. If you have a zerk fitting on the spindles then you have E-Z lube axles. I've attached pictures of both spindles for you to see the difference.

If you don't have E-Z Lube axles instead the same hub assembly is # AKIHUB-545-2-G-2K that has a standard grease cap.

These hub assemblies use bearings # L44649 for both the inner and outer. If you tell me your bearing numbers I can find the correct idler hubs for your trailer.

If the trailer does have standard spindles you can use Bearing Buddies to great them. I've linked our selection so you can match up the correct ones to your hub bore.
