Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Replacement Magnet - BP01-225

Jeff Hello everybody, this is Jeff @etrailer.com. Today I'm gonna take a look at this replacement trailer, brake magnet for the Dexter axle, 4,400 pound and 7,000 pound electric brake assemblies. Now this magnet will allow you to replace the worn out magnet on your Dexter trailer brakes. And what's nice is, just by changing the magnet only, it'll save you money and time because it's better than replacing the whole entire brake assembly. You can see this magnet is a nice oval design. So it does include the, or it does increase the efficiency of the magnet, helps extend the life of the magnet.

If you notice the wires that come out of the magnet, they have this nice sharp, protective sleeve here on it. And the reason they do that is 'cause when this is installed on your brake assembly, this portion of the wire goes through the backing plate, and you want to make sure that the wire is protected so it doesn't rub against the opening in that backing plate and cause those wires to, cause a short somewhere. Now the wires, you can see there's two of them, they are black wires. One will connect to a ground, the other connects to your brake feed. And because they're both black, either wire can be used for either function.

This does replace the brake magnet on your Dexter axle electric brake assembly. It works with the 10 inch by two and a quarter inch 4,400 pound brake assemblies and the 12 inch by two inch 7,000 pound brake assemblies. As you can see, this part will include everything I laid out here on the table. The magnet itself, the spring, and then the retainer clip that'll hold the magnet to the brake lever on your brake assembly. But that should do it for the review on the replacement trailer, brake magnet for the Dexter axle, 4,400 pound and 7,000 pound electric brake assemblies..

  • Info Needed to Pick Out Replacement Bearings for Trailer
Get the hub off and get me either the diameter of the spindles where the bearings ride or the numbers stamped on the bearings. If there is a set of Dexter brake assemblies used currently there's a very good chance you have a standard hub that we'd have bearings for.

  • How to Pick Out Replacement Trailer Brake Magnets
We carry several replacement trailer brake magnets that are all designed to fit specific models of brake assemblies. If yours don't seem to be close enough to the armature surface of the hub then it would seem that you do not have the correct magnets or your hub isn't seated all the way on the spindle. I attached a link to a page that has all of the brake magnets we carry. You would want to select the brand and brake assembly size from the filters on the page and the correct ones will...

  • Trailer Brakes Release Intermittently on Enclosed Car Trailer
The fact that the braking issue happens when you are towing the trailer but not when it is sitting still for testing makes me think that there is a loose connection somewhere that is affected by movement of the trailer and vehicle. The first places to look are the vehicle and trailer side connectors. Make sure each of them is clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins. Make sure the wiring going to the trailer brakes is not pinched or sandwiched between...

  • How To Attach Brake Magnet to Brake Assembly
Installing the magnet, part # BP01-225, is not tough at all. There is a retaining clip on the control arm that holds the magnet. The hole in the magnet goes over the upright part of the arm and rests on the spring. Then, all you have to do is replace the clip that holds the magnet to the arm. If you need the retaining clip we sell them in a pack of 10 with part # AKBRKR-MC.

  • Correct Electric Trailer Brakes For Dexter 7,000 lb Axle
Thanks for the photo, and you are correct, you do indeed have a Dexter 7,000 lb axle, and are also correct regarding the shoes and magnets for Dexter 7k electric brakes, the Replacement Shoe # DX28FR and Replacement Magnet # BP01-225. That said, replacing the entire electric brake assembly is a good idea, and what you need for your Dexter 7k axle is the following: - Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7,000 lbs # 23-180-181 - Mounting Bolts and...

  • Troubleshooting One Electric Brake Assembly Not Functioning On a Tandem Axle Trailer
You can run a jumper wire to the trailer brake that is not working to determine if the wiring may be damaged that goes to that brake assembly. Often times axles will have a wire that runs through the axle to the other side for that brake assembly. There is a chance that the wire became damaged inside the axle. You can test the wiring to the brake assembly with a Multimeter # PT89ZR to determine if you are getting the same voltage and amperage to the brake assembly. If you are getting...

The difference between these two parts comes down to the size of the brake assembly and hubs that are on your axles. The # AKBRKR-M10 that has green wires are designed for 10" electric brake assemblies, where the # BP01-225 are designed for 12" brake assemblies. You would want to choose which one is best for your trailer brakes based off of the size of the brakes/hubs. Typically if you've got a 3500-lbs axles, you'll need the # AKBRKR-M10. If your trailer has 5200-lbs axles or larger...

  • Recommended Brake Assemblies For Gooseneck Trailer With Dual 7K Axles
With 7K axles on your trailer I recommend using brakes that are designed for your rig. Using 6K brakes on the trailer may not be sufficient. Also, the linings are constructed of different material between the 6k and 7k. The 7k material is more aggressive. Since price is a factor for you I recommend going with less-expensive...
