Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Finally had an opportunity to use the trailer with the new tires. They performed flawlessly which one would expect after buying new tires. I actually bought a higher rated tire then I needed just for my own reasons, Haven't noticed any ride difference as far as a harder or stiffer ride. Put over 500 miles on 'em the first time out. Very happy with these.

As a follow up tires are still performing great. No issues. We tow a 2900 pound pop up all over the place, Normal run for us would be about 300 miles give or take. Tires and rims have been awesome.

by:

I have less than 100 miles on these tires so I really can't say it is a 5-star item. It sure looks the part in person. I haven't had any indication that they are out of round or have sidewall issues. Although I have few miles on these tires, I made the same purchase for the next project's needs. I will also be purchasing another two for spares.

by:

Thank you, etrailer for stocking this size wheel and tire. I've looked everywhere and couldn't find it. It's a great quality wheel and great tire. It looks good on my pop up. Also need to thank etrailer for a great experience. When my tire arrived, it had been mislabeled at the warehouse and was a different side than what I ordered. I called etrailer and they exchanged it hassle free. I will definitely use etrailer again when I need camper parts. Oh, and the price was great!

by:

For the price of these new wheels and tires it’s hard to justify pulling a camper to a tire shop and leaving it to get new tires; I ordered a set of four from etrailer and they came in a few days later; I got new tires “and wheels” and didn’t have to take my camper somewhere to get it done; also by doing this I was able to save my best looking tire for a spare and take the three used wheels and tires to scrap for cash! I also saved another used one to use as a spare for my utility trailer.

by:

Excellent customer service and fast shipping. Received my wheels in two days.

by:

Bought as a spare tire for my boat trailer. Lug pattern and tire size are exact match. Cheaper from these guys.

by:

I want to thank you for excellent service -- I could not ask for better. Your web site was easy to use and to order from. I received a quick confirmation of the order, which even seemed personalized confirmation of shipping. And then it arrived 3-4 days earlier than I would have expected. And it was the right product, right size, right mount. And it was all done in about 15 minutes for me- saved me driving time, gas costs, and having to special order unstocked merchandise locally-- less expensive when all those factored in. I'm delighted.

by:

Fast free delivery. Tires as described. Great communication.

by:

They arrived fast and I was able to install both new tires without any problems! I would definitely purchase from this company again!

by:

An easy, competitive priced order. Will shop eTrailer again. Thanks.

by:

My pop up trailer needed new tires, and I couldn’t find any locally (not at the camper store, not at Walmart, not at Tires Plus). I easily found what I was looking for on this website and ordered two tires. They came quickly. Unfortunately, I bought the wrong ones (read the manual wrong). Return was easy and I got my new tires quickly. Yay! I would definitely do this again—super easy.

by:

The tires and rims have been great for over 3000 miles hauling my 4000 lb tractor from N Illinois to Gulf Shores, Alabama and back! I did have them balanced before installing!

by:

Ordered Westlake Pop-up camper tires with rims. Arrived exactly on time! Easy ordering, detailed description and wheels & rims look great on our pop-up. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Fast and easy. Great product

by:

I replaced my tires and wheels using a full set of four of these. It cleans up the look of my aged trailer and i feel safer. I could not be happier. Thanks to etrailer.com for the quick shipment.

by:

The greatest part about this purchase? For the size and weight of this rim and tire, not only was it free shipping but it arrived in 3 days. It would have received 5 stars but I haven’t used it yet as it’s a spare for my trailer.

by:

Ordered online and it arrived in less than a week. Tires for our pop up camper are increasingly hard to find locally. E-Trailer comes through again. Thanks.

by:

I'm happy to purchase the Rims. and Tires for the trailer boat

by:

Everything went smooth and quick delivery.

Thank
you

by:

Tires and wheels are excellent replacements on my tent trailer. Even came inflated to the proper tire pressure right out of the box. Would purchase again with no problems.

by:

Order was sent out very fast. Product is excellent. Installation easy. Very happy

by:

I haven’t installed the wheel yet but it appears to be very good quality. Ordering was easy and the information needed to order the correct wheel/tire was provided on your web site. So far I’m very satisfied.

by:

13" trailer tires. I needed to lower my trailer bed, but was worried about a smaller tire not having enough load capacity. I found these, load range D, with nearly the same capacity as my 15" tires. Good price, quick delivery.

They have worked very well. I may go back to a larger tire and wheel. I’m sure you have deals.

by:

This is the 3rd item I've ordered from e trailer.good company.

by:

This is a great tire for my heavy duty application of a Coleman Bayside tent trailer. Etrailer delivered for me over night when I had to use my spare and I still had quite a distance to travel. Since it was late in the day the customer Service Rep Erika made sure the order went to the warehouse and it made it out for overnight delivery.

You got me out of a big problem with that tire, and for that I thank you immensely. There are not a lot of sources for that wheel and tire, and the Coleman Bayside was so heavy it needed this tire. We have since sold that trailer, so I cannot comment, but I am sure it is doing fine. Thanks again

  • What Wheel Size is Required for Standard Trailer Towing Speeds
All of the ST (special trailer) tires that we stock are designed, tested and DOT approved for 65 miles per hour, which is the standard for trailer tires, unless otherwise indicated on the product page. The wheel size and/or tire size does not change the rating or standard speed which the tire is designed to travel at. When towing a trailer, you should select your wheel and tire combination based on the trailer manufacturers recommendation or, if there is no manufacturer recommendation,...

  • Increased Tire Size and Axle Flip Kit for Raising Ride Height of Trailer
Yes, we have several options for 14" and 15" wheels with a 5 on 4 1/2" lug pattern. For a 14" tire you will need to ensure you have an inch of space available above your tire for the increased size. However, changing to a larger wheel size does not always result in a taller trailer. For a 14" tire and wheel combo I recommend the Westlake ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 14" Silver Mod Wheel item # 274-000053. This is a radial tire that has an 8-ply rating and a 2,040-lb max load at 65...

  • Will 175/80-14 Tires Replace 175/80-13 Trailer Tires
The only difference between a 175/80-13 and a 175/80-14 is the height. The 14 inch model will be 1 inch taller. You need to make sure there is 1/2 inch of space available above the existing tires size to accommodate the larger size. I have included a couple of links on trailer tires for you. Also, a 14 inch tire will not fit a 13 inch wheel so you would need to replace the wheels as well. A 175/80-14 is not a common trailer tire size. If you meant a different size, let me know.

  • Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Replacing 7.00-13 Tire Size
According to several conversion charts I found online, the closest 'modern' tire size to 7.00x13 is 185/80-13. We offer the tire only in a load range D (1,710 @ 65 psi) as part # AM1ST79. We also offer the same load range tires mounted on rims. For a white painted wheel with a 5-on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, choose # AM3S331, for the same tire on a galvanized wheel, go with part # AM3S334, or for a white modular wheel, part # AM3S333 .

  • Can 15 Inch Tires and Wheels be Put on a Trailer with 14 Inch Tires and Wheels
You can go to a larger size tire on your boat trailer as long as the larger size will fit. If you went to a 205/75-15 tire size the width would not be an issue but it will be 0.4 to 0.8 inches taller than a 215 or 205 size 14 inch tire, respectively. There would need to be greater than 0.2 to 0.4 inches above the existing size to go to a 15 inch, which seems very likely. The most common wheel bolt pattern for a 205/75-15 is going to be a 5 on 4-1/2 inch. I have linked a help article that...

  • Narrower Tire Recommendation than a ST185/80D-13 for Trailer that Weighs 2235 lbs
Based on the weight of your boat and your trailer you would need a tire with at least a 1,118 lb capacity. For a narrower tire than the ST185/80D-13 that you currently have that would have enough capacity you would want to go with a 175/80-13 with a Load Range of C as that will have a 1,360 lb capacity at 65 psi. The part # TTWTRTM1758013C would be a great option. This tire size will be .3 of an smaller in diameter and 10 mm narrower overall.

The tire size ST 205-75-14 that you tried already is 26.3 inches tall so the 185/80-13 would be right at 2 inches shorter in diameter. Assuming your bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2 inch the part # AM3S331 would be for a wheel and tire in the ST185/80-13 size and has a 1,725-lb maximum load at 65 psi. • Can Bias Trailer Tires Be Replaced with Radial Trailer Tires
Yes, as long as the actual tire size is the same, a radial ply tire like the Kenda ST185/80R13 # AM10208 will fit onto the wheel just the same as the bias alternative # AM1ST79 it's replacing. Radial trailer tires differ from bias models due to the 90 degree angle the cords run to the direction of travel (compared to a 32 degree angle on bias). This allows radials to flex a bit more for better ground contact and stability. The physical fit onto an existing wheel and trailer suspension...

  • Replacing 175/80R14 Trailer Tires
I can certainly point you in the right direction. A 175/80-R14 is fairly uncommon these days, but we do have options for replacing them. A 175/80-R14 has a diameter of 25" and is about 6.9" wide. The best replacement we can offer will be the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias trailer tire # AM3S331. This has a diameter of 24.4" and is 7.2" wide. So you will be losing .6" of diameter and adding .3" of width. I imagine this will fit very nicely in the current fender area, and you will stay very close...

The load range D on the Loadstar ST185/80D13 # AM1ST79 actually gives you a higher weight rating than the C load range. For this size D is 1,710 lbs at 65 psi while C is 1,480 lbs at 50 psi. It doesn't hurt to have a tire that is rated for more weight and the benefit to this tire is that it has a max speed rating of 81 mph. You will need to determine how much clearance you have on your current tires throughout the suspension range.
