Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

Excellent product and excellent service! I pull a Arctic Fox 32A with a 2010 Chev Silverado 2500 HD with a Duramax. The tongue weight is 1430 pounds. I upgraded from a Husky 12,000 pound hitch to the Reese 17000 pound RP66006 weight distribution hitch, and the RP54977 Shank. There has been a remarkable improvement in the ride, much smoother, and no bouncing. And , it is level. I can't say enough about the great service from Katie D at etrailer

I am extremely happy with the Reese hitch I bought. And, I have to say, the after sales service from etrailer is outstanding. Not many businesses would follow up a year after the sale.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for Motor Home Towing 13,000 lb Trailer
If your motorhome does indeed have a hitch with a 10000 lb capacity, it means that the hitch is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 10000 lbs. To confirm this, the hitch should have a sticker or plate on it listing the capacities. The tongue weight capacity should also be listed. Tongue weight is the amount of weight that can safely be suspended from the receiver (or the maximum downward force exerted). The hitch might also list a capacity for use with a weight distribution (W/D)...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for a 14K Dump Trailer with 8 Tall I-Beam Frame
The only viable solution for your application is the Reese Titan Weight Distribution (WD) # RP66006. This has a max weight rating of 17,000 lbs with a tongue weight (TW) range of 1,000 lbs - 1,700 lbs so you do need to make sure the loaded TW of your trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle doesn't exceed this weight. This WD system will fit with your 8" tall I-beam frame but you will need a professional welder to place boxed in areas about 5-1/2" long...

This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. Most likely the part # RP66006 would...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a Trailer with 900 Pounds Tongue Weight
For your trailer with a total tongue weight of 900 pounds (including the weight of the cargo loaded behind the rear axle of the truck) I recommend a weight distribution system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight # RP66084. Your tongue weight is right in the middle of the range of this system which is exactly where you would want it to be. It comes with dual-cam sway control which prevents trailer sway from starting. The included shank has a max rise of 7 inches and max drop of...

  • Weight Distribution System with 4 Inch of Drop to Tow 9,800 Pound Trailer Level
There are weight distribution systems for 2 inch receivers that have enough drop to tow your trailer level. For example Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System # RP66560 allows for a maximum of 4 inches drop which is exactly what you would need. This system is rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight. Based on a gross trailer weight of 9,800 pounds the trailer tongue weight will be in the neighborhood of 980 to 1,470 pounds. When choosing a weight distribution system, you will need one that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight when loaded and ready to tow. Anything loaded in the tow vehicle that is behind the rear axle will also count towards tongue weight. Tongue weight is usually between 10 and 15 percent of the gross trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow. With an unloaded weight of 10,200 pounds, that would be between 1,020 pounds and 1,530 pounds. • Weight Distribution for Dump Trailer with 8 Inch Tall I-Beam Frame
I do have a great option for you but a Reese system is not going to be the best choice in this case. You will need to box the trailer frame where the weight distribution brackets will go by having steel plates welded on. What you can use is an Equal-I-zer system, # EQ37120ET as an example, and then add 2 outer link plates, # EQ90-02-5378, sold in quantities of 1, and 2 inner link plates, # EQ90-02-5208, also sold in quantities of 1. You were told correctly, you may not need a sway control system. Sway is dependent on a lot of factors including things like trailer length, load arrangement in trailer and road conditions. In any case, I will recommend a weight distribution system that is set up to easily add a sway control system if you decide you want it or it becomes a necessity. A weight distribution system is needed when the trailer being towed weighs more than 50 percent of the towing vehicle's weight or the vehicle sags when the trailer is coupled to the vehicle. There are a few things to consider when choosing a system that will work best for you. First, your trailer hitch will need to be rated to be able to use a weight distribution system. You will need to know 2 things when considering a system. You will need to know your gross trailer weight(GTW). This...

  • Is Weight Distribution and Sway Control Necessary on 2011 Keystone Towed by 2011 Silverado 2500
Any time the trailer weighs more than half the weight of the vehicle, we recommend weight distribution. The OEM sway control is similar to a traction control system. The vehicle can sense trailer sway by the movement of the rear of the vehicle. Power is then sent to one wheel or the other in order to combat trailer sway. I do not have any personal experience to be able to say how well it works, and the comments I have heard about it are not definitive one way or the other. My best suggestion...

There is just no way around this, so the best thing to do is get one in the ranges you will be at the majority of the time.
