Video Transcript for Review of Reese - Weight Distribution - RP22225

Today we're gonna take a look at the replacement trunnion spring bar for the Reese weight distribution system. This has an 800 pound maximum tongue weight capacity. Now this is a replacement spring bar, it's designed to work on the Reese weight distribution system. This is a trunnion bar, it is hot rolled and tapered for nice superior strength and flexibility. The trunnion end, which is right here, is what will connect into the head assembly. And then the curved end on this side will connect to lift chains that will connect it to the lift brackets. Also, this spring bar could be used with the dual-cam sway control by Reese.

The curved end here is designed for use with that system. It does attach to the sway control arms. It will sit right on the sway control arm. Now we do sell that dual-cam sway control system separately on our website, it's part number RP26002.Now again, the tongue weight rating on this is 400 pounds to 800 pounds. And it is for a quantity of one spring bar.But that should do it for the review on the replacement trunnion spring bar for the Reese weight distribution system.

With this 800 pound maximum tongue weight capacity.

It’s always such a pleasure to work with etrailer. They have such great technical staff that helps me better understand what is the right item for my situation. They also have such a tremendous variety of RV related products. For me, Etrailer is simply the best I’ve ever worked with. So knowledgeable, courteous and professional.,

LESSON LEARNED!!!! READ IF YOU ARE NEW TO TRAILERING!!!!
I bought a new 27' travel trailer. Naturally, I needed a way to couple it to my vehicle safely. I have about ten years experience towing with a weight distributing hitch, so I was reasonably confident I knew what I needed when ordering a new one. I estimated that the toungue weight on my mew trailer would be in the 900lb range. I purchased a Reese dual cam package rated for 1100lb tw from Etrailer. I installed it according to the specifications and measurements outlined with the instructions. I found myself making adjustment after adjustment to get the trailer to "settle down" at speed. After trying everything from moving all weight possible to the toungue to changing the angle of the spring bars several times, I decided to weigh the tongue at a local truck scale. I was 503 lbs...... unloaded.... My spring bars were obviously waaaay to stiff to be effective. I ordered 800lb spring bars from Etrailer, installed them, and road tested them. The vehicle ensemble drove and handled like a dream. It felt extremely stable at interstate speeds. So take a lesson from me......do your homework before you order your stuff.

This is a great weight bar. Very simple to install and seems well built. I have been around other styles and choose the trunnion style for its ease of installation. Also, etrailer customer service can not be beat! They will not stop until your situation is resolved. This was the case on another product a friend purchased and I was hooked on etrailer since then!

I changed from 600lb bars to 800lb bars I still don't like the Reese Dual Cam hitch I thought maybe a heavier bar might make a difference they did stop the porpoiseng but still get some sway . that's why I only gave 3 stars nothing wrong with etrailer service and support .

I have the “Old Style” Reese dual cam setup on my 2 horse trailer with large tack room bumper pull. I lost one trunnion style spring bar and the bolt on cam that’s attached to the underside end of the bar (see picture). Reese discontinued making parts for that system in the early 2000’s, my system was purchased in 1969. Looked everywhere with no success. I called Etrailer and for a new dual cam system and talked to Nicholas C, he advised me that the RP22225 spring bars would replace the old spring bars and cam. I had my doubts until he sent me a customers picture with the RP22225 bars on the same system I have, “A picture is worth a Thousand words”. Nicholas C And the Etrailer save me over $300 in unnecessary parts and a days labor setting up a new weight distribution system.

by:

Etrailer had the cheapest price I have ever seen for 800lb spring bars and free shipping. I placed the order at 5:30pm CST on a Saturday and the bars were at my house on Wednesday!!! Completely satisfied and will definetly look to etrailer for future trailering needs.

by:

Extremely prompt and courteous service. Highly recommend.

by:

The new weight distribution hitch exceeded my expectations
Pricing was excellent,
Customer service was second to none!

by:

I don't have much to say about the product, it is a good product well worth the money. I will say one thing about etrailer if you're looking for RV parts or anything related I highly recommend them they are very knowledgeable staff and fast shipping and the price was great.

by:

The service agent who helped me was very helpful. I lost a stabilizer bar on a trip from Missouri to Florida. The correct bar was delivered right to my RV site. I would recommend e-trailer for all trailer needs. Barry

by:

Got exactly what I needed to replace an item you might think no one would want to steal right out of your own back yard. It appears in the product pictures as if the head end has an offset but it does not. The top and bottom pins are straight in line with the bar so that it can be used on either side.

by:

I needed lighter spring bars for my lighter weight trailer. Etrailer had the perfect replacement for a great price.

by:

Had a trunnion bar delivered to my campsite while on vacation. Arrived very quickly. Reasonalbe price. Thanks a lot!

by:

We had broken a spring bar on a large rock while out of town, etrailer
quickly sent a replacement so we could make our trip back home.

by:

Fast, easy, and efficient!

by:

Got exactly what I ordered and it arrived when I wanted it, you can't beat that!
Thank You etrailer.com

by:

works perfectly with my older Reese head unit.

by:

Good product didn’t realize the chain and clamp weren’t included. All pictures showed the chain and clamp. Now I have to find those parts and wait for their delivery. A bit disappointed in all parts being separate. I lost my entire old one so I don’t have those parts available.

All of our replacement parts are sold separately just in case someone needs just that specific item and not the rest. The chain kit you need is Item # 3216, but I am not sure what you mean by clamp.

by:

Shipping was prompt, as usual, and order was correct. The wd bars work as they should.

by:

Great service and product was excavated what I needed.. thanks

by:

Great products, great company to deal with. Will use again in the future.

by:

We lost this part during our 10 hour drive to Myrtle Beach. I ordered and it was delivered in 3 days right to our campsite.

  • Picking Out Weight Distribution and Sway Control for R-Pod 178
Ideally the loaded tongue weight of a trailer falls in the middle of the tongue weight range of the weight distribution system. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. So if your dry tongue weight (unloaded) is 250 lbs you could pretty easily find yourself over 400 when it's loaded and if you have cargo in the truck. Another option that I think would be ideal would be to go with the lower rated version of this system part # RP66082 which...

  • Parts Needed to Use Reese Trunnion Weight Distribution on Another Trailer
Yes, you can get the individual parts of Reese weight distribution system # RP66542 needed to use the system on a second trailer. First, you will need the frame brackets that mount on the trailer frame. For both brackets I recommend # RP6637. You can also add new chains with # 55630 but you will need to order 2 of them. This would be if you have to also use different bars. For the bars you can use the same ones that you have if the tongue weight of the new trailer is 600 to 1,200 pounds....

  • Can the Reese Dual Cam RP26002 Work On Straight Spring Bars?
To get the Reese Dual Cam Sway Control System # RP26002 to fit, your spring bars will need to have a curved end that the chains are attached to. Kind of hard to explain, so I did include a picture of the end of the bar this fits. With that being said though, the # RP26002 will not be able to work with your current spring bars. You may be able to replace your current spring bars with something like the # RP22225, but you will need to confirm the weight capacity needed before doing so.

The snap up brackets (# RP21501) can still be purchased, or as the you suggested you can use the alternative chain hangers (# RP58305). Both of which are compatible with the dual cam HP (# RP26002). • Recommended Anti-Sway System for a 2014 Jay Flight Swift SLX 184BH
The weight distribution system I recommend for your 2014 Jay Flight Swift SLX 184BH is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution part # RP66072. This system has some of the best anti-sway control features on the market. The dual cams not only work to reduce trailer sway as it occurs but also works to help prevent trailer sway entirely. The system is backed by a lifetime warranty. The only other thing you will need is a hitch ball, part # A-90 or part # 19286. If you upgrade to a new, heavier...

  • How to Choose the Right Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution
You are correct, ideally with weight distribution you want to fall in the middle of the weight range. However, I suggest that you weigh the tongue of the trailer so you can get an accurate measurement because you don't want to get a system that is too small or too big for your trailer. Since it's used, and the specs might not be accurate I recommend using the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044. This gives you an accurate measurement, so you won't be guessing. One big advantage...

  • How to Determine Tongue Weight when Choosing a Weight Distribution System
The trailer should have listed somewhere on it or in its literature the tongue weight that it should be. Typically tongue weight is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight but not always (this is especially true on boat trailers since the back of a boat weighs more than the front). It sounds like you are adding the vehicle weight or part of the vehicle weight to the trailer weight but this is not correct. You would add the weight of cargo LOADED behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle...

  • Which Spring Bars Would be Best 600 lb or 800 lb For Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and Starcraft Hybrid Antiqua
When determining the correct spring bars for your trailer you will need to take into account the weight of gear loaded behind the rear axle of the truck and the additional tongue weight loaded in the camper. I believe larger is better but in your case the 1,200 pound bars are too stiff if they are causing the ride to be uncomfortable. I would go with the 800 pound spring bars, item # RP22225, since you will have gear behind the rear axle and gear to load into the camper. With 350 pounds...

  • Can 1 Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System be Used on 2 Different Trailers
You can use a Reese Strait-Line weight distribution system with a vehicle that has air bag helper springs. You may need to play around with the amount of air pressure in the air bags to get the best ride but yes they can be used together. Also, you can back up the trailer when using the Strait-Line system though with extreme turns (like jackknifing) you will want to remove the spring bars. You can purchase the dual-cam sway control separately, # RP26002, to use the same system on 2 different...

  • Replacement Lift Brackets and Sway Control Recommendation for Reese Weight Distribution System
It sounds like you are talking about the lift brackets such as # RP6637. They attach to the trailer frame and hold the chains at the ends of the spring bars. As far as sway control the best option is going to depend on the design of the spring bars in your weight distribution system. If the bars have the hook end like bar # RP22225 then dual-cam sway control # RP26002 is the best option because it stops sway before it starts. If your spring bars are straight at the ends then your best...

  • Will New Reese Spring Bars Fit in Place of Older Draw-Tite Spring Bars
If your bars are labeled as Draw-Tite then the system is probably fairly old. There have been changes made to the heads over the years and the new bars will not fit in the old head. To change the bars you would also need to change the head with # RP58167. If you can tell me the approximate age of your weight distribution system I can determine if you can use the new bars or would have to also replace the head.

You can click on the link provided to see all replacement trunnion bars for Reese and other brands. You will want to choose bars based on your system's tongue weight (TW) requirements. • How to Identify Weight Rating of Weight Distribution Springs Bars
Unless there is obvious damage to your weight distribution spring bars - rust, chipped-off material, or a clearly inappropriate bend - they should still be functional. On a trunnion style bar like Reese # RP22225 there is a bend at the trailer end of the bar which engages with the dual cam sway control. On a round bar system there are bends at both ends. The thing is you need to know the tongue weight they are rated for. Spring bars can look very much the same but be rated differently....

  • Strait-Line Weight Distribution for a 2015 Ram 1500 and 2012 Windjammer Travel Trailer
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight so on a 7,200 pound trailer that would be 720 to 1,080 pounds so the 1200 pound system (which is actually rated for 600 to 1200 pounds)...

  • Will Lift Brackets of Reese Round Bar Weight Distribution System Need to Be Moved for Trunnion Bars
According to the folks at Reese, when one of their trunnion bar weight distribution systems like the # RP66074 is installed, the center of the snap up brackets would sit about 29-1/2 inches rearward of the center line of the trailer ball, give or take a 1/4 of an inch. If your current system uses the Reese Heavy Duty round bars, they are the same length as the trunnion bars so your snap up brackets would already be in the correct location. If you have a Pro Series round bar system, those...

  • Selection of Weight Distribution/Sway Control System for Travel Trailer
The key factor for selection of a suitable weight distribution system is the total effective tongue weight. Trailer dry hitch weight is not enough to select a system. The linked article describes several ways to take a precise measure of your trailer's...

If the weight distribution system that is on the trailer is more than 3-1/2 to 4 years old, then you will need to basically replace everything and not just the spring bars. The problem is the newer parts are not compatible with the older parts. The new bars will not fit in the old head, so you would have to replace that as well. And since you will be adding dual-cam sway control, you might as well replace the whole system because the cost is about the same. My recommendation is a new system....
