Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great tire. Fast shipping. E-trailer is great.

by:

Great product and again SUPER SERVICE from etrailer I bought this tire and rim for a spare on our camper and only problem I ran into was trailer has aluminum wheels on it now and I bought the steel wheel and tire so after I received it (in only three days) of course I had to try it out finding that the aluminum wheels have a bigger shoulder on the lug nut and actually too big for the steel wheel so I had to run to parts store for regular lug nuts but no big deal. So glad I tried it before I actually needed it. This had no reflection of my high opinion of etrailer as they sent me what I ordered and they will be my first call when I need more parts

by:

Exactly as described on the website. Size, ply rating and mounted all correct for application. Timely product delivery. Reasonable price for quality received.

by:

As advertised.

by:

Fast and quick service. Perfect!!!

by:

They are round. What more can I say.

I ordered this tire/wheel assembly for use as a second spare for my triple axle toy hauler. When I received it, I checked the date stamp which indicated the tire was already 3 1/2 years old.

I contacted E-Trailer's customer service via e-mail and received a quick response form Caleb H who apologized for shipping a tire of that age. He immediately shipped a replacement and arranged for a R/A and pre-paid return label for the old tire/wheel.

I received the replacement tire/wheel assembly today and it has a date stamp of mid 2016 which is very good in my opinion. I shopped around before ordering and found E-Trailer's pricing far better and with FAST free shipping, it's a win-win for me.

Thanks E-Trailer! You guys (and gals) rock!

  • Which Modern Tire Size Can Replace 6.5-16LT Tires on 1966 U-Haul Trailer?
The closest tire size to the 6.5-16LT tires currently on your trailer is the ST235/80R16 like what is found on the Castle Rock ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" Silver Mod Wheel - 8 on 6-1/2 - Load Range E # LHACK133. Yes, a 16 inch trailer wheel and tire can easily fit in place of a 15 inch 6 lug wheel and tire like with the part # AM34834. This is the size ST235/80R16 which has a weight capacity of 3,500-lb maximum load at 90 psi and has an overall diameter of 30-7/8 inches.

The Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w/ 16" Steel Mod Wheel - 8 on 6-1/2 - LR E - Black Finish # AM34834 come balanced in the manner trailer tires are balanced. This is different from the balancing of vehicle tires that require the weights be added, but they do come balanced in a different way and ready to install on your trailer. I've attached an article in case you have further questions on this balancing process. You can choose to have them further balanced with weights if you...

In order to upgrade from the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern to the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern on a 2020 Grand Design Imagine XLS 23BHE you will need the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # 84656UC3-EZ. The Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly will be a direct bolt-on swap. • Weight Capacity Of ST235/80R15 Wheel/Tire Combination
Using a wheel and tire combination like the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" black Mod Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E # AM34834 on a tandem axle trailer would give you just over 7000 lbs per axle capacity at your tires. Your load capacity of your trailer will be limited to the weakest component in your system, so even though your tires/wheels will have that capacity you will want to look at each other component to determine your max capacity of your trailer.

  • Recommendations to Raise 2008 Airstream Travel Trailer

I am not sure of the exact size of your current 14 inch tires, but a 16 inch tire and wheel like the Kenda ST235/80R16 # AM34834 will be around 4 inches larger in diameter compared to your existing set. This tire will be only about 0.4 inches taller in diameter and a less than an inch wider when compared to your existing set. I can help you find exactly what you need, though I was not able to find any type of reference to the number you gave. • Do Wheels Have PSI Ratings?
The Vesper Steel Modular Trailer Wheel - 16" x 6" Rim - 8 on 6-1/2 - Black item # TA65VR and the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel - 16" x 6" Rim - 8 on 6-1/2 - Black item # AM20761B you referenced do not have individual PSI's because they do not have a tire or valve stem installed. The tire you would add to these wheels and the valve stem would determine the PSI. The Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E item # AM10248 would be a good option. This tire has a PSI of 90.

  • Can I Use the Spare Tire From my Tow Vehicle as a Spare on my Trailer
You can interchange those tires in an emergency, like if you are off road somewhere and you have a tire on your trailer blow. But you don't want to have two different tire sizes on your trailer for very long. I would only leave it on there long enough to get back to a safe location. You don't want to do any long-distance driving with that setup. When it comes to which of those tires is better for your trailer, I recommend keeping the 235/80/16R size on your trailer. Trailer tires usually...

  • What is Overall Weight Capacity of Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Black Mod
Yes you are correct. Since the wheel weight capacity of the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Black Mod Wheel # AM34834 is lower than the tire you would be limited to the wheel capacity as the overall capacity of 3,050 lb instead of 3,500 lb. If there were a total of 4 of these used the capacity would be 12,200 lbs like you mentioned instead of 14k.

So with this question you're asking a couple different things (so please bear with me because there isn't a direct yes/no answer). The first thing to note is that the tires you ordered from one of our competitors has a load rating of more than 3,000 lbs, but the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" Rim - 6 on 5-1/2 - Black # AM20560 has a 2,830 lbs capacity and you always have to go by the lowest-rated capacity. Trailer tires are constructed with stronger sidewalls and are designed to be fully inflated to their max psi, unlike your vehicle's tires. Since tires with the same dimensions could have different ratings I can't say exactly what yours will be rated for, but typically it's around 80-90psi. You can still get a 3,500 lb Timbren Axle-Less system for a larger wheel, but it needs to be with a hub and drum with a standard bolt pattern.
