Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire With Aluminum Wheel - KE39JR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range E, and it's mounted on this 16 inch black aluminum trailer wheel with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this is a tire and wheel assembly, it's ideal for stock trailers, utility trailers, and even campers. The wheel on this is a nice durable, corrosion resistant aluminum wheel, has an open eight spoke design to it, and as you can see, it's a nice glossy black finish with a machine face on the spokes, and then they do a clear coating over the full wheel for excellent corrosion resistance. Now, the diameter on this wheel is 16 inches, the width on just the wheel is six inches wide, the bolt pattern we mentioned is an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern, and if you wanna measure that on a wheel like this that's an even number of lugs, it's pretty simple, because the lug holes are directly across from each other, so all you have to do is pick any hole, measure from the center of that hole to the center of the hole right across from it. On this, it'll measure 6 1/2 inches, so 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern.

The pilot hole, which is this large hole here in the center of the wheel, goes over the hub on your trailer, diameter of that opening is 4.9 inches. And I do wanna mention, if you noticed, this does not come with the center cap, if you do want one, we do sell those separately on our website, you just wanna make sure to get one that's 4.9 inch diameter, so it'll fit right through here when you install it. Does use the wheel lug size of 1/2 inch by 20, and the weight capacity of just the wheel is 4,400 pounds. One other feature, they use steel inserts in the lug nut wells here, helps keep your wheel securely in place on your trailer hub. When you tighten down your lugs, it prevents those holes from elongating or wearing down and eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of your lug nuts.

Now, the tire itself, it is a Kenda Karrier special radial trailer tire, and when I say special trailer design, that's the one that'll couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire, uses double steel belts, full nylon plies, combined for nice superior function and long life, and they have a nice computer generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials, gives you superior traction in wet and dry conditions. Now, we do mention that it's an ST tire, which stands for special trailer tire, has the sturdy sidewall, so it can handle heavy loads, it's created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on other vehicles. Just to go over the tire, the size, which will be stamped on it, right here ST again for special trailer, 235/80R16, the R means it's a radial tire. Section width, 9.2 inches, overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.7. This is a Load Range E tire, which means it's a 10-ply rated tire, has a maximum load of 3,500 pounds at 90 psi.

And last thing I do wanna mention is all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings on them, and where you can tell the speed rating is if you go right after the size we just went over, you'll see two numbers for the load index, and then the letter M. Speed rating is always in a letter designation and it's stamped on the sidewall, so letter M would mean 81 mile per hour speed rating. And this assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications. But that's gonna do it for the review on this Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range E on the 16 inch black aluminum trailer wheel with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern.

  • Is Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheel Balanced
Hi Stephen, Good question, and the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheel # KE39JR do not come balanced. I recommend balancing beads for that, because they are super easy to use and don't require you to go to a tire shop, so they're also economica. For beads on a 16" tire/wheel use the Counteract Tire Balancing Beads Single Pack for Trailers # CA66VR. This is a pack for one tire so if you're replacing both tires use 2 packs, or if you have a tandem axle trailer...

  • Do the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheels Fit 9/16" Wheel Studs
While a lot of wheels have cross compatibility with 1/2"-20 or 9/16"-18 wheel bolts, the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheel # KE39JR states that it only works with the 1/2"-20 wheel studs. We do have the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w/ 16" Liger Aluminum Wheel # LH76FR available, that is a similar style but works with both 1/2"-20 or 9/16"-18 wheel studs.

  • Can Larger Wheels and Tires Be Installed on a Triple Axle Trailer With 225/75R15 For More Clearance?
Instead of having to replace all your wheels and tires you should consider the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR55QX. This kit will allow you to raise the suspension on a triple axle trailer with double eye leaf springs, 1-1/4" or 2-1/4". If you were to look at larger tires like the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheel # KE39JR this tire is 30.7" tall versus your 225/75R15 # LHWL304 which is only 28.3" tall. These would likely have fitment issues...

While we do have several options that will fit your Dexter 7,000LB Axle # 8327864-EB with the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern the most commonly used is the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" White Wheel # AM34903. Another popular option is the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheel # KE39JR.
