Rooftop Cargo Box Solution for 2014 Dodge Durango with Factory Roof Rack

Question:

Looking to purchase Yakima Skybox NX 16 but want to know if I will be able to open the back of my vehicle without interference. I have a 2014 Dodge Durango with factory roof rack. I believe the distance from the front rack to the cargo door seam is roughly 51 inches. Is there someone there that can verify it will fit or suggest an alternate box/size? Need the carrier for winter ski trips for family of 5 2 adults, 3 kids. Longest ski is 170cm. Thank you

The Yakima Skybox NX 16 cargo box # Y95AV that you referenced will fit on your 2014 Dodge Durango's factory roof rack if the crossbar dimensions do not exceed 3-1/2- x 1-11/16-inches and if their center-to-center spread is between 24- and 36-inches.

You can determine the clearance for full opening of your rear hatch by taking one simple measurement. Measure from the center of the front crossbar (put it in its forward-most position if is adjustable) to the seam where the roof and hatch meet. If this distance is 47-inches or more then the Yakima Skybox NX 16 will allow full hatch opening without interference.

Your longest skis are 170 cm long so these would easily fit within the Skybox NX 16 which will fit up to 175 cm. If you find that your measured distance is not long enough for the box, you can choose a smaller one.

Often rooftop cargo users also choose a tire step like # HE4040 to provide a height advantage for loading and unloading cargo. This step comes fully assembled and folds for easy storage in the vehicle.

Do note that your vehicle will have a roof weight limit noted in your owner's manual or available from your local dealership. Be sure that the combined weight of the cargo box and cargo does not exceed this limit. For example, let's say your roof weight rating is 100-lbs and you choose the Yakima Skybox NX 16. Since the box itself weighs 48-lbs you would have left enough capacity for 52-lbs of loaded cargo.
