Troubleshooting Hopkins Trailer Breakaway System Not Charging Battery
Question:
My Breakaway 20099 is not charging. No lights at all on front of box working. Ive tried it with both my Ford 250 truck and now my Silverado 2500. Do I need new battery for it or charger kit to get it working again? Thanks so much.

First you will want to check the wiring of the Hopking Breakaway # 20099. If the black wire from the breakaway box is not receiving 12 volts from the 7-way on your tow vehicle it will charge the battery.
You will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test this wire for 12 volts when the vehicle is connected and running. If there is no voltage there then you will need to trace this wire back to where it connects to your vehicle wiring and make sure it is connected securely to the 12 volt circuit of your trailer wiring.
You also will need to check that the white ground wire of the box is connected to a clean surface on your trailer frame or to the common ground wire of the trailer's wiring.
If the charging circuits of the trailer are good and the battery still doesn't charge then the battery may be in need of replacing. For that you would want the # HM20008.
