Trailer Hitch Ball Wrench Size and Torque Rating for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Ball Shank Size

Question:

What size socket is the nut on a 2 5/16 ball? What torque do I tighten the nut? Is this for all 2 5/16 even the 17,000# and 10,000# capacity 1 1/4 shank balls?

You can have a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball on either a 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch shank. The nut on a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank takes a wrench with a 1-7/8 inch socket. A hitch ball with a 1 inch shank will take a wrench with a 1-1/2 inch socket.

You will need to torque all hitch balls with a 1-1/4 inch shank, like 2-51/6 inch hitch ball # A-6, down to 450 ft/lbs.

I am including a link to some helpful trailer hitch ball information, if needed.

A good auto parts store might have them, even for loan. Any mechanic or auto shop should have them. You can big tool stores, like a Sears Hardware.
