where does red lead connect to brake light switch

To install the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller # TK90160 on a 1999 Dodge Dakota without factory trailer connector, the red lead will connect to the cold side of the brake pedal switch that goes hot only when the brake pedal is pressed. The brake connector is above the brake pedal in the dash.
If the wire shows power with the headlights or turn signals on, then it is not the right wire. I would recommend using a circuit tester # PTW2992.
