Will Using Suspension Enhancement Increase the Towing Capacity of a 2009 Ford Ranger Sport

Question:

I have a 2009 Ford Ranger Sport 6 cylinder four door pickup. I tow a small 16ft travel trailer. I traveled the US this summer with little problems. I was told at one park there is a suspension kit that I could get to be able to tow more trailer. True or not? I would like to add more suspension to have a smoother ride when towing, what do you recommend?

Not true. The capacity of the truck is set by several factors and you would need to change/upgrade several components in order to be able to tow more than what the truck is rated for.

The rear axle, suspension, tires and wheels, running gear, transmission, motor, and possibly other things such as the frame would all have to be upgraded. Adding suspension enhancement will provide a better, more level ride but will not increase the towing capacity of your 2009 Ford Ranger.

Since you are looking for a better ride when towing, suspension enhancement would work well for you. I recommend Timbren springs, # TFRR050A. The Timbren springs you would just install and be done, unlike air bags that have a more complicated installation and require adding and removing air as needed.

If the truck sags at the back when towing then the best solution for that would be weight distribution, not suspension enhancement. It can also help improve ride quality. To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Both the truck and hitch will need to be rated for weight distribution to be able to use it.
