Should Trailer Equalizers have Side to Side Movement When Installed
Question:
Hi there. Should the equalizer in my slip-leaf tandem suspension have any rotatinginch or side to side movement? I put in new equalizer bolts and with no weight on the axles I can move them by hand in a side to side twisting motion. Is the equalizer worn out? I just purchased this 1985 36-foot steel horse trailer with living quarters and hope to use it for hauling motorcycles south in the winter and as a moose hunting camp in the fall. Any info you could provide would be helpful. Thank you very much.

Some movement in the equalizer is normal since the part is designed to move. If the bolt holes in the equalizer are wallowed out or are oval shaped that would be a good indicator that it's time to replace them.
Inspect them and see if the holes look like they are worn out. I attached a page that has all of the equalizers we offer for if you do decide you need to replace yours.
