Recommended Brake Controller for 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Being Used in the Mountains

Question:

Hi, I have a 2003 Dodge 2500 Ram HD Diesel with a short bed. I will be towing a 2008 Keystone Cougar 276RLS 5th wheel trailer. The truck currently has a Hopkins Impulse controller but I been told I would save some life on my trailer brakes by upgrading my controller or installing an exhaust brake. We live in Colorado and do quite a bit of mountain driving. Your input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What you have heard is correct. A proportional controller will certainly save some wear and tear on the vehicle and trailer brakes. A time-delayed controller will always send the same preset voltage to the trailer brakes, a proportional controller has an internal sensor that can determine how quickly and at what intensity the tow vehicle is stopping and then send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes. This will allow the vehicle and trailer to stop at the same rate. A proportional controller can differentiate between a panic stop and a tap on the brakes, while a time-delayed controller cannot.

I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This controller is very easy to use and setup. It has multiple boost settings for towing trailers of various sizes and weights.
