How To Install A Brake Controller on a 2009 Ford F-150
Question:
I need to install #90185 or like product on a 2009 F-150. Is the installation basically plug in or is it more involved ? Also the existing factory plug on the trailer harness is 4 prong, I would like one of your combo round seven prong and 4 or 5 prong. My question be done w/o a big deal ? Thanks.

Installing a brake controller system on a 2009 Ford F-150 is very simple thanks to the brake controller port they provide. The port is in a funny location but you simply plug in the brake controller and you are done.
The most popular brake controller we carry is the Tekonsha Prodigy. For a Prodigy for your truck, you would use part # 90185 and adapter # 22292 and it will include a wiring harness that will allow you to simply plug the controller into the truck. No cutting, splicing or soldering wires at all.
The brake controller wiring port is behind the center console of the dash, where your radio and A/C controls are. The easiest way to access it is to pop off one of the trim panels. I have included a link to the instructions so you can review them. I have also included a video of the same brake controller being installed on a 2009 Ford F-150 4x4.
You will have to do some wiring for the 7-Way, part # 37185. A bulk of the wiring for the 7-Way is done by simply connecting it to your existing 4-Way. You will then need to connect the white ground wire to any nearby grounding point on the truck frame. You will have to extend the blue wire and splice it into the wiring a bit further up the truck. You will do the same with the black wire and bring it up to the 12V wire in the harness. The purple wire can be omitted if you do not need reverse lights on your trailer. It is always a good idea to use a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, to make sure you have the right wire.
It sounds like a lot, but it really is not that much. I have added a link to a video that shows exactly how to do this on a base model 2008 Ford F-150.
If you any other questions or concerns, feel free to send me an email and I will help however I can.
