How to Tow a 2000 Chevy S10 Behind a Motor Home as Inexpensively as Possible

Question:

Hi, I need to tow a 2000 s10 2 wheel drive. My desire to not spend a bunch of money on your tow bar mounts has got me wondering if I could put this front hitch on and mount the reese tow bar mounts to it?

There is certain equipment required by law to flat tow a vehicle. That equipment includes base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. If you just need to tow the 2000 Chevy S10 once or twice, the expense is likely not worth it. But if you flat tow the truck often behind a motor home then you are going to need these items.

Check the S10 owners manual to see if it can be dolly towed (with the front wheels up on a dolly). If so you could rent or otherwise obtain a tow dolly locally and that will be the least expensive option.

Otherwise to flat tow I can recommend the required parts and go with the least expensive options that I can. Starting with base plates you can use # 161-2. Then for the least expensive compatible tow bar use # RM-020, rated for 5,000 pounds. For safety cables use # RM-643.

For lighting a magnetic kit, # RM-2120, is the way to go.

And the least expensive braking solution, which does cost the most of everything, is the SMI Sta-IN-Play DUO, # SM99251. Up until you have to add a braking kit the cost of everything else was not much more than the parts below.

The Reese tow bar # 63180 seems like a bargain but considering that you are limited to 45 miles per hour and would have to have bumper bracket kit # 40602 custom installed and ultimately connected the the frame, it is not the best option.
