Replacement Brakes for a Dexter 2.8k Axle with 10 x 1-1/2 Inch Electric Drum Brakes
Question:
I have a 2012 Keystone Springdale 179QBWE travel trailer. I took the drum off and find that indeed I have 10 x 1 1/2 brakes. I also got the back plate part number off the back and that matches to a 10 x 1 1/2 as well. According to the Dexter website, the K71-046-00 is the correct shoe kit. Of course, what I really want is the K23-472-00 bake assembly but no one seems to carry that or the never adjust version K23-476-00 .

Like you said, 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes are hard to find. We currently do not offer any in that size. But the shoes, # bp04-065, are a fit for Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes. The issue is that the axles associated with the Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes normally had the brakes welded onto the axle. This means the assembly cannot be replaced and you can only get replacement parts for the brakes.
But if the axle was manufactured after September of 1999 and the brakes are not welded to the axle but rather bolted to the axle then you can use 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes provided that the drum width where the pads make contact is at least 2-1/4 inches wide.
If your brakes are welded on then you could also replace the axle. We carry some axles, see link, but no 2.8k axles (which is what is associated with the 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes). Axles can also be ordered locally at a tractor or trailer supply shop.
