Will this work as a replacement for the dual force strut on a Thule Weekender box?

I spoke with my contact over at Thule and found that the original strut for the Weekender cargo boxes is no longer available. But I have good news. You can use replacement strut # TH14936 instead!

The Thule Replacement Lid Lifter Hinge #TH14936 that you referenced can fit on either the left or the right hand side of a cargo box. They are "ambidextrous". On one side they fold in and when on the other side the fold out.

According to Thule you can use the QM3 mounting hardware, #TH04997, for the Weekender cargo box. The crossbars on your 1998 Toyota 4Runner will need to be up to 3-5/8 inches wide. I have included a picture that shows how this hardware will install.

For your Thule Summit cargo box you can use replacement dual force strut #TH14936. Like you said, the original strut on the box is no longer made so you would need to use this newer one.

The difference between the Thule hinges or struts #TH14936 and #TH14933 is the spring tension. Both of these hinges will work for your Sears X Cargo Sport 20 lid. However, the #TH14936 includes better springs.
