Turning Clearance With 2011 Montana 5th Wheel Towed by 2014 Ram 3500 Short Bed

Question:

We have a new Ram 3500 short bed single rear wheel 2 wheel drive. The trailer is a 2011 Montana with the Max Turn front cap. From your experience, would you say there is enough clearance during maneuvers with a standard hitch? Also which picture frame adapter is designed for the 2014 Ram fifth wheel factory prep. Thanks.

Expert Reply:

Trucks such as your 2014 Ram 3500 short bed usually benefit from either a sliding 5th wheel hitch or a Sidewinder replacement 5th wheel pin box to enable tight low-speed turns without risk of trailer/truck contact. The linked diagram shows the recommended minimum clearances between the truck bed rails and bumper and the 5th wheel itself. You can compare these recommended clearances to your particular towing set up to determine if you have satisfactory room for normal maneuvers.

The linked article on Sidewinders includes a table showing compatible replacement pin boxes that will bolt on in place of your existing fixed pin box and provide 22-inches of additional turning clearance. You can use your existing pin box brand/number to check if there is a Sidewinder replacement available.

The Reese Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for the Ram 3500 # RP30154 that you referenced is the correct adapter for your factory under-bed rail-equipped Ram.
